DS has worms, I'm horrified!!
I've already run off to the pharmacy to get ovex for us all plus another dose for in 2 weeks time but I'm worried my DD, will get it and she's only 18 months so will phone the doctors in the morning to get her something.

I need practical advice, how did you get rid it (and the shame ☹)???

I remember having worms as a kid and having to take a revolting substance called pripsen. I’m heaving at the memory. Ovex is a great improvement!

Wormsarehere · 01/07/2021 07:48

Well first night done, I bathed him this morning, all towels are in the washing machine now so I'll strip the bed in a bit and steam clean it. DS said he feels fine and his bum doesn't itch so I think we're all good as at least his not scratching his bum and then touching everything.

Panic over I think.

@crystalize

As well as Ovex for people looking at ongoing deterrent there is an inexpensive powder/supplement called diatomaceous earth (food grade). Its like a chalky powder you put in water and luckily, tasteless.

We have never had it again since, its brilliant and has other health benefits too as it is silica based. Also used for pets as well to prevent worms.

Where did you get it from and how often do you take it?

I use that for all my chickens.

@x2boys

My son got them at nursery yes it's horrible but we got over it quickly ,my son has severe autism so he was putting everything in his mouth at the time as I recall we just treated us all with ovex and washed all bedding etc ,I do remember it distressing him at night so be prepared for that
Sorry if this is a stupid question but how did you know they had them?

Mine are often distressed at night anyway, put everything in their mouths but have never seen any sign of worms!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/07/2021 08:12

I never understand why people don't do the same with young children as dogs and cats and WORM ROUTINELY.

If everyone did it a couple of times a year, they would not constantly be circulating.

Northernsoullover · 01/07/2021 08:13

@Sunshine4you

I have never in my life had worms nor have any of my kids.. how strange!!
I've had them around 4 times. Twice as a child and more recently as an adult. It's not strange just because you haven't had them.
Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood · 01/07/2021 08:22

Oh OP. We have worms to the PIL one year when they came to visit. I had no idea we had them, but OMG what a palaver. Lots of shaming. We had worms regularly for quite a long time, I’m not sure when we last had them but I suspect we are due. Very often it is because there is one (or maybe more) family not treating. Perhaps not realising, so I find some years we have them more often, probably based on who they are sitting and mixing with at school. I think nursery for my youngest DC was the source as we haven’t had them since he started school.

Vaseline on the bottom is a must for all of you, stops them being able to lay eggs and so stops the itching. Wash the bedding a day or two after the first ovex dose. Hoover and wet dust everywhere but especially bedrooms. Repeat weekly for a while.

I find we actually need 3x doses of ovex, at 10 days separation to really get rid of them.

Also I don’t believe in shame so usually text the class WhatsApp just as a heads up: ‘FYI, child has worms, have dewormed the whole family, suggest keeping an eye out on your kids and doing yourselves, as source is probably school’

TuckMyWin · 01/07/2021 08:23

Good for you. But I assure you that when your child is screaming in pain for hours, you won’t be calling it ‘marketing shite’. It varies between not being noticeable, just a bit itchy, and painful to the point of me being on the phone to 111 telling them it couldn’t possibly just be worms. It was. ‘Marketing shite’ it is not, I never want to watch my son go through that again, and will be worming him regularly.

TuckMyWin · 01/07/2021 08:25

Sorry, my comment was in response to @WaterBottle123

KungFuPrincess · 01/07/2021 08:39

Imagine my horror when i had my niece to stay and she came out of the toilet and said errr KungFuPrincess why is there a worm in my butt?!

I don't have kids and it hit me like a bomb had gone off. Mad dash to the pharmacy, calls to her equally mortified mother, everything in the wash, everyone having hot showers.

Freaked me right out, I've dealt with most things when I have my nieces over but that was the most traumatic yet!

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/07/2021 08:40

Just use Ovex. No need for anything else.

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/07/2021 08:42

Regularly worming your kids 🤣 surely that is setting them up for loads of gut problems?

Spanglemum · 01/07/2021 08:53

@Latenightreader OMG pripsen! I'd forgotten its name. It was foul, and also gritty.

MaxwellsChocolate · 01/07/2021 08:56

I get worms every time I go work in a nursery or foundation stage despite me washing my hands a zillion times. I had them loads as a kid too. Thankfully I realise straight away as an adult, tablet, strip bedding and wash towels, job done.

Conchitastrawberry · 01/07/2021 09:01

I’ve got three kids and never experienced them until my youngest got them. I gave him ovex (all of us took it). He wore pants to bed under his pj’s. Showered each morning and each night. Washed bedding daily for a week. Hovered a few time a day etc. They disappeared as quickly as they’d appeared.

myfuckingfreezer · 01/07/2021 09:19

@DismantledKing

Kids get worms, and kids get nits. It happened a hundred years ago, and it’ll still happen in a hundred years time. There shouldn’t be any shame, it’s just one of those things.
I don't get this - I had never heard of worms before mumsent. Never had them as a kid, never knew anyone who had them, nieces and nephews haven't had them (my sisters are VERY open about this stuff Grin). Are they more prominent in some areas or have they increased or something?
crystalize · 01/07/2021 09:24

@Wormsarehere Re the diatomaceous earth - just search online and read reviews etc. Think I got mine from amazon. You just spoon it in water, just makes it chalky.

We got this because I was absolutely stressed to the eyeballs when the worms kept coming back!! This was about 5 years ago and I will always have this in my cupboard and take for a week every now and then. I put it in my dogs food and she has never had worms. It's really good for bowel problems too!

Hallyup6 · 01/07/2021 09:35

You're overreacting. Worms are incredibly common. My 11 year old is susceptible to them. The last two occasions that she's had them, I've given her one dose of Ovex and washed a few towels. Nobody else (7 of us) has picked them up, despite not being treated. They don't spread as easily as you think and they go away incredibly quickly.

VestaTilley · 01/07/2021 09:35

Don’t worry, it’s really common.

Change all bedding every day, wash it on 90 or whatever your highest setting is, then line dry it.

Hoover mattresses and seams and open windows.

Make sure children wash hands with soap all the time and keep nails short.

Check bottoms at night as that’s when the worms come out.

Don’t be ashamed, it’s incredibly common.

Ipanemama · 01/07/2021 09:37

I was like you the first time we had them. Now a decade later, we’ve had them so many times that it doesn’t bother me I just wash and use ovex/Vaseline.

Our source is definitely primary school. None in holidays and we left the school for a couple of years - no worms. When we rejoined the school, back came the worms. My youngest is in year 6 now so I’m hoping that’s the end of it Smile

Pinkandpink · 01/07/2021 09:46

I wasn’t ashamed when my daughter had it, it’s just something that happens. Especially when you have children. We have had them twice over the years and both times got medication on prescription. We are in Scotland, so we don’t pay.

OhRene · 01/07/2021 09:55

Meh. You probably only just noticed. Apparently, worms can be present in 60% of people. Most of us don't know. I think a regular worming program, like we have for our cats and dogs, should be a thing!

Wormsarehere · 01/07/2021 10:25

Thanks everyone!
I do feel calmer this morning, I think it was the shock of seeing a worm wriggling out of my sons bum!!
They don't tell you in all the mummy books exactly how much time you spend looking at another human being's arsehole whether it's wiping it, applying bum cream or looking for worms!! They really should mention it, the midwife should really play you aside and have a word 🤣
I washed the towels on 60 so off to carefully strip the bed.
