To think retailers should t charge staff for shop lifters

Dd just started a temporary job in a Morrison's local. Training was non existent and it's minimum wage . She has been worried about people using tap and pay and walking off before transaction approved as the system is really slow but there were no systems in place.
Today a guy bought £10 of beer, tapped and power walked off, transaction was declined.
She immediately told her supervisor and was made to pay for the beer on her debit card. So basically an hour and a half pay for her .
Surely this isn't legal ? They can claim it back as lost stock ?
Supervisor said oh that's nothing , someone had to pay £200 once

For those saying this didn't happen, oh how naive you are!

I saw some shit from my days working in a supermarket. The worst was a guy who was new, and because he had to travel in quite a distance, would pick up extra shifts while he was there to save on travel, so ended up doing ridiculous hours. 14 hour days, 6 days on the trot etc.

He'd just missed payroll so didn't get his first paycheck for 6-7 weeks. A few days before payday, he was fired for gross misconduct. Apparently stealing out of the till Hmm Except they did no investigation, gave no chance of appeal, provided no CCTV evidence and paid him nothing at all because the reason for firing was 'gross misconduct'.

I encouraged him to fight it but he was really upset and just wanted to walk away. Bastards.

I myself got in a legal battle with them for their dodgy dealings and they settled, so anyone thinking he probably did steal out of the till, I genuinely think it was unlikely as they routinely tried to screw everyone over.

OP is your DD going to push this with Head Office etc? Even security guards don't get penalised if someone walks out of the store without paying.

tallduckandhandsome · 30/06/2021 07:08

@Terhou get out of bed on the wrong side?

How the fuck would everyone know what a McColls is?!

Sparklfairy · 30/06/2021 07:09

Sorry I somehow missed that you'd contacted them already!

Rosesareyellow · 30/06/2021 07:11

That is not ok. And no I don’t think it’s legal. As a pp said, I worked in retail and wasn’t allowed to stop a shop lifter - I would have to let the security know. There was one who came in regularly and swapped prices on items to make them cheaper, it was obvious but not much we could do until security caught her on camera.

strawberrydonuts · 30/06/2021 07:13

That's illegal and isn't exactly going to encourage staff to report thefts in the future so I don't see the benefit for the manager!

Imnothereforthedrama · 30/06/2021 07:19

Of course that’s not legal , either the op is having us on the dd is having you on or someone is lying.
She should of said no I don’t have my debit card no money anything then reported . I smell a rat I too have worked in retail and never heard of this .

Christ you're making yourself look like a right tit here. They're not owned and operated by McColls. They're mcColl stores which have been taken over by Morrisons. The OP even posted a link.

Actually you’re making yourself look like that. It’s only a wholesale deal, the shops aren’t owned by Morrisons Hmm

The new stores will offer a full Morrisons convenience range while being owned and operated by McColl’s.

If OP had said they were

I didn't say owned. The link the OP posted said 'The new deal, which extends the existing wholesale partnership until 2027, will acceleration the conversion of McColls stores to the new Morrison Daily'

She said it's a Morrisons local. People said that wasn't a thing.

In any event, it's not really the point. McColls are a big retail brand in convenience stores. The fact that some people haven't heard of them is irrelevant.

bjjgirl · 30/06/2021 07:33

Ok firstly I believe you that it happened, can't believe the number of people troll hunting.

This is not Morrison's policy and probably the
Previous shops policy that they have carried on. She needs to let Morrison's know, it is not on.

TedGlenn · 30/06/2021 07:35

Playing devil's advocate here, but from the text exchange, it doesn't (necessarily) sound like shoplifting - his card was declined but he was out of the store before your DD realised/could call him back. This has happened to me in a Spar local, but the assistant called me back in time, before the automatic doors had closed behind me. Your DD says the policy is to keep hold of the goods until payment has been approved.

So it could be argued there is some fault here, although it clearly shouldn't have resulted in your DD having to pay; more training would have been the appropriate response, but it's not (necessarily) a case of "DD has to pay for shoplifters" (i.e. something she can't control), it's "DD has to pay for her mistakes".

If it takes her pay below the minimum wage, it's illegal.

Billybagpuss · 30/06/2021 07:40

Absolutely believe this happened, can’t believe OP is getting a hard time about it.

Exactly the same thing happened to my cousin at Frankie and Bennies when a large group from a local community walked out without paying, wiped out his income for the entire shift. He never went back.

tallduckandhandsome · 30/06/2021 07:44

@Clymene

I didn't say owned.

Seriously?! Your actual words are ‘They're not owned and operated by McColls’.

Not surprising that you’re now lying.

And the OP didn’t say they are Morrison’s Local!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 30/06/2021 07:44

Your DD is lucky enough to have a degree and a bright future, with choices and dignity, without minimum wage jobs and exploitation.

She needs to stay in the post and take action with her union and Morrison's head office. She is in the ideal position to make a change to their shoddy practices without fear of losing her livelihood.

She owes this to her community and her society and has a moral obligation to act.

Karwomannghia · 30/06/2021 07:50

Will be interested to hear what response you get from head office, that’s awful!

BoomChicka · 30/06/2021 07:50

I have a morrisons local/mccolls on my road so it made sense to me.. I didn't realise it was such an unknown thing.
