Dd just started a temporary job in a Morrison's local. Training was non existent and it's minimum wage . She has been worried about people using tap and pay and walking off before transaction approved as the system is really slow but there were no systems in place.
Today a guy bought £10 of beer, tapped and power walked off, transaction was declined.
She immediately told her supervisor and was made to pay for the beer on her debit card. So basically an hour and a half pay for her .
Surely this isn't legal ? They can claim it back as lost stock ?
Supervisor said oh that's nothing , someone had to pay £200 once

@Ariela It is more difficult to prove than a straight wage deduction but is still counts as a deduction, it is the same principle as waiting staff having to provide their own float for cash sales or cover tables that 'dine & dash' or even if an employer insists on staff wearing specific clothing that staff have to purchase themselves.

Worth reporting to ACAS as every complaint must be investigated and this might not be an isolated incident - it may not be official policy but it could be a practice that happens across the store network that goes completely unchecked by upper management.

I have heard of this at fuel stations and a few small independent outlets but never in a large chain for beer.
She should have refused but was no doubt bullied into it.
Complain to head office.

I’m calling scam too. The manager could be in on it for all we know

In theory so could the staff (and I'll say again in theory because I'm absolutely not suggesting it's the case with OP's DD)

It happened in my own area, where many of the "losses" from a particular cashier's till turned out to involve his mates

Still worth getting union/ACAS advice in this particular case though - preferably before anyone shouts their mouth off on Twatter/Facebook or whatever

Blow that whistle. And teach your daughter what unions are for
