To think retailers should t charge staff for shop lifters

Dd just started a temporary job in a Morrison's local. Training was non existent and it's minimum wage . She has been worried about people using tap and pay and walking off before transaction approved as the system is really slow but there were no systems in place.
Today a guy bought £10 of beer, tapped and power walked off, transaction was declined.
She immediately told her supervisor and was made to pay for the beer on her debit card. So basically an hour and a half pay for her .
Surely this isn't legal ? They can claim it back as lost stock ?
Supervisor said oh that's nothing , someone had to pay £200 once

I'd be encouraging her to call head office as I bet they'd be very interested to know about this.

At the very least she should refuse to work on the self service tills again.

BrandNewHeretic · 29/06/2021 23:35

I had similar in an old job - i was advised by citizens advice at the time they cant make deductions from your pay if it works out that you then made less than minimum wage.

A customer broke something in the shop and left without paying for it. Boss asked me to pay, i refused, he tried to take it out of my pay - it was £300 out of a month's pay, but it meant my total pay for the month would have worked out at less than minimum wage for the hours I worked so he couldn't. If your daughter is already on minimum wage they can't do this.

They shouldn't do it otherwise because it's their failing and shit system, but the minimum wage thing is something to work with at least.

Not legal at all. It’ll be the supervisor wanted to keep ‘loss’ at a minimum to look good. They have procedures in place for theft. It should have been dealt with in the manor. She need to contact HR ASAP. I worked in a supermarket for 5 years, absolutely not a policy

Oh for goodness sake , I don’t have to prove anything
Yes , it’s called Morrison’s local, it’s a new collaboration with McColls, they sell Morrison’s stock but are run by mccolls, as I have said .google it if you don’t believe me .
I think I could make up something a little more exciting to troll about

Thanks for all those that have contributed stories and advice, much appreciated

@quizqueen

I would have refused to pay and, if they sacked me, I would go straight to the Daily fucking Mail with story.
quizqueen put it very well.

Why do people think you don’t get dodgy feckers who don’t follow policy in well known brand shops? Confused

It’s clearly a manager who is either avoiding discrepancies in a totally immoral way or they are covering up their own number fudging. The latter happened in a store I worked in in my late teens. Fake refunds etc.

Farinaz · 29/06/2021 23:50

That’s shocking and I doubt it was legal. Your DD needs to report to head office at both Morrison’s and McColls.

Powertothepetal · 29/06/2021 23:52

Morrisons bought McColls.
They own them, so the locals are run by Morrisons not McColls.
But it’s irrelevant anyway as you cannot make staff pay for stolen goods.
That isnt a legal policy anywhere and it most definitely is not Morrisons policy.

Teenagehorrorbag · 29/06/2021 23:54

From memory, you can't make deductions from anyone's wages without written agreement beforehand. Quite apart from the ludicrous nature of this anyway, AND the fact that it would take her below minimum wage so be illegal on that front - if they don't have anything in writing they can't do it.

Have her check her contract and read the small print. I bet there's nothing there. And yes - contact HR! Don't let her just resign and move on - someone needs to be sacked over this.

Why do some threads have to turn into a witc-hunt? OP I think you should complain and get something done here. It's my guess the manager is behind it and not necessarily company policy

You should have said this in your OP.
Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 30/06/2021 00:02

@Anordinarymum

Years ago my son worked in a supermarket where the policy was to stop shoplifters from running away with goods. One guy ran after a shoplifter who turned around and punched him in the mouth knocking teeth out before getting away.

The store would not pay the dental bill.

After that my son turned a blind eye when he saw anything.

Christ on a boat!!! That is despicable
ilikeagoodsarnie · 30/06/2021 00:03

Just please put a complaint in to HR

It pisses me off when a company is taking advantage of staff and they just leave and leave the rest of them in the same shitty situation.
Not the employees problem I know, but if she's leaving anyway they why not cause abit of ruckus when she goes?

This isn't morally right or legal and if they're doing it to your daughter then they'll do it to anyone else that works there.
If your daughter complains then hopefully she can put a stop for it and stand up for the other employees.

Like you said before it's the principle.

MiddleClassProblem · 30/06/2021 00:03

How have the details changed? It literally says Morrison’s local in the OP. It is in a village was added later just for context of lack of security guards.

None of that seems fabricated. Plenty of villages have the smaller sized supermarket branded stores.

Ariela · 30/06/2021 00:10

I imagine the 'supervisor' is targeted to minimise shop losses. And is also running a scam - that paid for case of beer probably went home with her. Quite sure the thief will be on CCTV.

This is what I was thinking
jimmyjammy001 · 30/06/2021 00:16

Tell your DD not to take her card or any cash to work and if it happens again, get her to ring the police as it is theft

rosalie11 · 30/06/2021 00:28

No this is not cerrrct please seek advice via citizens advise or a pro Bono Solictor in your area
