Can't watch the football because of the spitting

DH has put the England game on and the players are standing ready to go out and some of the players are gobbing in the tunnel. It really turns my stomach at the best of times but to see it constantly on the telly too makes me

I love this idea I may just pop them by the gate. Cougher spitter shares a garden with him so I'd be killing two birds.

If that's how you feel, you shouldn't really be watching a football match anyway!

Actually, it's to do with the amount of running they do increases a protein in the saliva which thickens mucus and makes it harder for them to swallow. It's one of the first things i said to my DSS when he signed as footballer

Rubbish, it's a male thing. If I get saliva in my mouth when I run, I swallow it. Not difficult, but men have to spit. It's utterly foul.

Yes I'm very glad that I am fully able to appreciate and enjoy it! Feel sorry for all those who feel they have to prove how much they hate football.

Where did I say I hated football? I've been thoroughly enjoying the tournament so far. Ffs. I just said I couldn't watch it because it was making me heave.

I ran 10k a few times a week and never felt the need to gob, but thank you for the posters who have educated me without being insulting as to why footballers need to do it. I still don't need to like it though.

Rubbish, it was very common even before TV was invented! The men coming out of the mines, the docks, anywhere where there was heavy work used to spit a lot, in addition the kind of cigarettes they smoked also added to the spitting. Maybe we need to blame grunting on the largely female tennis players who are really really annoying.

For a lot of English people this is an awful result, they find it impossible to celebrate any British, especially English, success. They'll cheer up if England lose on Saturday. It's a thing I've never experienced in other countries, the press, the people, are almost always behind their national team. The success of the 2012 Olympics was a great disappointment to them.

Oh bollocks. How many women spit? Our saliva is no different, our manners are.

It's always gross and particularly disgusting when so many people are having to spend their working days, on a pittance, wearing a mask - while footballers earn a fortune and spit with impunity.

And love the footy, but that's why the spitting makes me so grumpy too. I spend a lot of time telling my sons not to spit, and how hard footballers have to work to get to the level they do... Then sit down to enjoy the match together and have my 8 year old pipe up to point out which of his heroes is doing it!

Men's bodies don't work differently, but I'm pretty sure there is a difference between a professional football player and your average mumsnetter going for a jog.
