DH has put the England game on and the players are standing ready to go out and some of the players are gobbing in the tunnel. It really turns my stomach at the best of times but to see it constantly on the telly too makes me Envy

It is disgusting, they should be sent off for doing it.

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 29/06/2021 16:58

Totally agree

Shoxfordian · 29/06/2021 17:17

It’s gross

baileys6904 · 29/06/2021 17:18

Actually, it's to do with the amount of running they do increases a protein in the saliva which thickens mucus and makes it harder for them to swallow.
It's one of the first things i said to my DSS when he signed as footballer

Twistered · 29/06/2021 17:20

I think it's just one of those things that most of the time cant be helped. They are running about so much that it increases and thickens their saliva hence them spitting

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 29/06/2021 17:21

A but the match hadn't even started. They were in the tunnel.

It's absolutely revolting.

(But it's really, really dull anyway)

This.

Thats why in some sports they have regular water breaks.

They warm up before the game. And there will be nerves/ anxiety/ anticipation also increasing salivation. Spitting is gross, but the thicken saliva is harder to swallow.
NVision · 29/06/2021 18:11

Go for a 20 min hard jog and see how your spit and throat goes

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/06/2021 18:13

🤣

They don't just come out and start moving. They have been warming up priory to being in the tunnel. You don't have to watch it if you don't like it, that's fine, but at the very least understand why they do it.

In dinnerladies (the Victoria Wood sitcom), Dolly, one of the canteen staff says:

“That ruined Titanic for me, the spitting. The iceberg couldn't come soon enough once I saw that.”

Where is an iceberg when you need one?

LakieLady · 29/06/2021 18:29

It's disgusting and I blame footballers for the increase in spitting in public among young men.

Bollocks. I run every day and never need to spit. I’ve never seen a female runner spit. And I’m pretty sure that’s not because our female bodies process saliva differently.
SimonJT · 29/06/2021 19:20

@Boood I’ve done some half marathons and a full, I also play a sport and regularly train with women. Women definitely spit when running.

PurpleyBlue · 29/06/2021 19:21

I can understand footballers doing it but it's really weird when random people walking down the street do it

KateTheEighth · 29/06/2021 19:22

If you've been training hard, particularly running (even a long hard warm up) you sometimes get thick saliva at the back of your throat and it needs to go somewhere. We always called it a grolly spit. Needs must.

PurpleyBlue · 29/06/2021 19:22

Maybe they should all carry a hanky to spit into what with covid and all

PivotPivotPivottt · 29/06/2021 19:23

My neighbour is a cyclist and when he comes home he cools down in his garden then he leave his garden and holds one nostril and empties the other onto the pavement. My other neighbour is currently in his garden coughing and hawking it all up and spitting it out. I know this thread is about footballers and my neighbours are irrelevant I just wanted to offload Grin.

edwinbear · 29/06/2021 19:26

DS runs at a high level athletics club, he trains/competes (mid & long distance) for between 1.5 - 2hrs at a time, 3-4 days a week. He doesn't spit and I've never seen a single athlete spit either, at training or meets.

PurpleyBlue · 29/06/2021 19:29

PivotPivotPivottt can you leave a box of tissues by the end of his garden?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/06/2021 19:30

England won 2 - 0 against Germany.
fantastic game.

nobody who loves football cares about the spitting. if you don't like it don't watch it
