So, after a crappy few years that includes dropping out of School, not finishing my A Levels, working Min Wage Jobs to survive, having a baby, health scares, diagnosed anxiety disorder and a mental breakdown, I have now applied to University!

My family don't seem particularly bothered so I just wanted to share my news here instead.

I submitted my application this morning and the decision is pending. I should hear back by the 6th July. I'm excited and scared!

@blaisealex thanks. Will honestly be thinking of you - has weirdly made me feel less nervous and alone knowing I’m not the only one expecting big news that day. Thanks.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 29/06/2021 19:58

Bloody well done OP and good luck to you - I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you. And do let us know how it all goes Wine

PinkCast · 29/06/2021 20:40

Woo hoo 🥳🥳 congratulations!!! Best of luck with it.

LimitIsUp · 29/06/2021 22:47

Fantastic - delighted for you (I have a dd currently living out some of the challenges you have faced, so I know this is a very big deal)

AlmostSummer21 · 29/06/2021 22:56

Oh, how exciting!!!

Well done you! I'm even more impressed that you've chosen a degree that interests you, rather than one that bored you, but is considered 'a better choice'

I'll thump anyone who behaves negatively!! What are you doing?? Media??

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 29/06/2021 23:06

Massive congratulations! I still remember when I got my application in years ago. I was elated. Update us! Good luck!

supermodel · 29/06/2021 23:09

Well done, fingers crossed for you.

Sarahzb · 29/06/2021 23:15

Heyyyy! Big up to you. Enjoy learning things. Well done and HURRAH.

Coyoacan · 29/06/2021 23:16

Brilliant news. I went to university as an older student and it was great. I also studied something I was really interested in, rather than something would give me a career and I've never regretted it.

Ruralretreating · 29/06/2021 23:25

Congratulations and fingers crossed for good news in July!

Onehotmess · 29/06/2021 23:27

Awesome news! Well done for taking the plunge. Studying can be hard so keep remembering why you are doing it- keep your goal in sight!
Best of luck

Cactuslockdown · 29/06/2021 23:28

@blaisealex
Well done
My son after doing a lot of crappy jobs ( single dad at 21)
Decided to go back to uni to be a theatre nurse
He’s 40 this year and now half way through and bloody loves it

He did about 6 months as a carer last year and bloody loved that also
In a way I wished he’d stayed at the level instead of accruing loads of debt but he’s loving the theatre work and smashing it
So I’m happy if he’s happy

I hope it works out as well for you ( he ended up with three kids and it hasn’t been easy but he’s approached this with a maturity he never had at 18 or so

blaisealex · 30/06/2021 14:50

I got it! I'm starting Uni on 20th September!! 🥳🥳 They've just come back and offered me an unconditional place but I do have to do a foundation year.

Great news OP! Congratulations. My close friend had a similiar story, dropped out of sixth form, tried college dropped out, a series of dead end jobs and an anxiety disorder then she eventually turned it round. Learned coping stratergies for anxiety. Eventually did a degree with the OU. Her family didn't bother going to her graduation and so me and some friends went, it was very moving. Now she has a good job she enjoys and is happy.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/06/2021 16:40

Well done! Star
I hope it's brilliant.

Your uni will have something like an effective learning service to brush up on (or learn, in my case) study skills and essay writing.
Don't be shy about taking them up on it- I found it really helpful to have someone outside my course who could act as a sounding board when I lost confidence.

I had a visit to my new postgrad course campus today. University libraries are so lovely.

PinkCast · 30/06/2021 19:13

Well done, that's great news!!
