5am club - anyone here got any experiences?

Blinketyblink · 26/06/2021 21:45

Posting for traffic!

Has anyone joined the 5am club? Official one (Robin Sharma), rather than just waking up at 5am because work / kids / other commitments.

If so: how did you / do you find it? Did it benefit your life?

No just had to Google it but sounds interesting

Womendohavevaginasnick · 26/06/2021 22:30

I don't know what it is, but if it's getting up at 5am for no reason then I know for a fact it wouldn't have a positive impact on my life, I'm too cranky if I don't get my sleep out 🤣

AnyFucker · 26/06/2021 22:33

5am club ?

Not hardcore enough for me. 3am…that’s where the real insomniacs hang out.

Bookaholic73 · 26/06/2021 22:35

No.

I have teenagers so don’t go to sleep until they are asleep (about 11pm).
I can’t function on less than 7 hours sleep. I’d rather stay up later.

Viviennemary · 26/06/2021 22:36

Ive heard about this but I don't think it's for me. Still I could do with getting up a bit earlier.

Youdoyoutoday · 26/06/2021 22:45

No, just fucking no!!
This is no way beneficial to anyone unless you're going to start your bed time routine at 9pm and if you have kids that stay up till 8 then arse about for what feel like 16 hours till they actually go to bloody sleep, then no one wins.

And have you actually seen 5am in the morning??? It's boring as hell especially in the winter unless you have some massive house where you can actually get up and make a coffee without waking up everyone else.
God, I can't think of anything worse than actually wanting to wake up at 5am without the promise of an airplane to catch.

5am indeed? Tut tut!

shouldistop · 26/06/2021 22:47

I don't see how getting less sleep will make my life better but I have a 4yo & 6mo.

wheresmymojo · 26/06/2021 22:47

I'd be interested to try it. I've always wanted to be one of those people that gets up early, meditates, drinks green tea and does yoga.

Currently I wake up at 8.30, throw make up on and shout for my husband to make a coffee.

What time do you go to bed and get up now OP?

Gettingthereslowly2020 · 26/06/2021 22:48

I'm guessing anyone wbo gets up at 5am will have been in bed fast asleep long before you posted this OP

I read the book, it's an interesting concept but not for me. I think it can cut you off from people and from society in general. If you're getting up at 5am, you can't go out at night, you can't stay up late watching a film or going for drinks with friends.

Having said that, it works for some people so good for them. Each to their own.

I'd be more likely to join the 6:30 club, although I struggle to get up at 7:30!

I nodded along to every bit of this. Am absolutely baffled as to why people do this unless completely necessary. Sleep is so important to the body and long term health that we should all be trying to sleep more, not less.
Daisychaincarrot · 26/06/2021 22:50

No.

I tried. I really did.

I got a lot done, sure. However by 2pm I was useless to everyone. I was unhappy and tired.

Crowtooyo · 26/06/2021 22:51

I'm up twice a week at 5:15 for work and that's bad enough for me!

Winkywonkydonkey · 26/06/2021 22:51

I do have a toddler who wakes early but he will go back to sleep for a bit and I relish that window, if he stays down, between 5-6 to get a coffee, breakfast and just sit on my own for a bit. Sometimes I'll start work, other times I'll just watch BBC news.

I think you've hit the nail on the head, it's for people with massive houses who won't disturb anyone. I can't imagine my 8 year old being too impressed at being woken up at 5am by me stomping down the stairs and pottering around the house.
thenightsky · 26/06/2021 22:53

5am is when I'm just getting into my deepest sleep. As an insomniac, I normally see my clock reach 3.30am on a regular basis.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 26/06/2021 22:54

In theory I like the idea. A couple of hours time to myself to get things done.....

In reality one of the kids would wake up and appear downstairs which would completely defeat the object.

Oh and I'd probably just be
pressing snooze every 9 minutes for 2.5 hours as I'm shit at getting up.

TimeForTeaAndG · 26/06/2021 22:57

Willingly getting up at 5am?! Bad enough having a 6:30 alarm when I was working at the office and had to get DD to breakfast club!

Sod that. I enjoy my sleep.

ViciousJackdaw · 26/06/2021 22:57

5am my arse!

I bet Sharma is one of those insufferable wankers who tells people they are 'wasting the day', should they remain in bed past sunrise.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 26/06/2021 23:00

Oh god I can't think of anything worse! I hate getting up though and struggle to do so at 7a.m. for work. I'd be like a zombie from 2 onwards. So much so in fact that I would be unsafe to drive.

Womendohavevaginasnick · 26/06/2021 23:04

Sleep is actually really good for you btw

Youdoyoutoday · 26/06/2021 23:04

@Ihaveaskedyouthrice exactly!!!

I was following the fb group for the organised mum method (TOMM) and it was all good till Gemma (the owner/inventor) said she does this (good for her!) and women were literally going mad saying oh I'll have to get up at 4am to do all my cleaning then be able to sit down at 5am to "relax" at like Gemma!!!

Sorry but that baffled the crap out of me! What the hell is so wrong with sleeping? Letting ourselves sleep, relax and heal?
Let alone waking up a house full of kids, do these 5am fuckers not realise how long we spend trying to get our little fuc..... sorry, I mean, angels to sleep????

tunainatin · 26/06/2021 23:06

I'm an early rider and in winter am often asleep by 10, up at 5. I love having my me time in the morning, as I'm useless in the evenings no matter how much sleep I've had. I read or work at that time and feel like I'm getting a head start on the day.

Blinketyblink · 26/06/2021 23:15

Oh dear! For those aghast at the idea that the 5am club advocates less sleep and saying that sleep is essential and good for you / healthy. YES - that's a given!

The 5am club (not that I am here to try and sell it or anything) doesn't advocate less sleep, it advocates a change in lifestyle and routine. Yes okay this won't and can't work for everyone. But I am more asking for people that have tried it to report back on how it was Smile

In normal times @wheresmymojo about 10pm. I am thinking of doing a modified version of the 5am club and waking at 6am instead - then following the morning routine set out in Sharma's book

I don’t folllow the 20:20:20 segmentation but I do like to be up at 5.30 ish for a clear hour of reading, learning, coffee and doing something outside.

I feel productive, I feel like I’ve already done something with my day, and by the time DC wake for school, the kitchen is clean, and I’m ready to be friendly when they can’t find their reading book and have left their water bottle at school.
