5am club - anyone here got any experiences?

Posting for traffic!

Has anyone joined the 5am club? Official one (Robin Sharma), rather than just waking up at 5am because work / kids / other commitments.

If so: how did you / do you find it? Did it benefit your life?

I like the idea of it a lot (having time to get organised in the morning, get some work done before the kids get up etc.) I tried it for a while and it does work if you can get to bed on time. It was a very productive time. I only got about 40 days in though when my streak got disrupted and I didn’t manage to get back to it. Mainly because the mornings were getting darker and colder (I’d find it very hard to do this in the winter months). Also DS got an evening job which requires him to be picked up at 10pm. By the time I get home & actually get to bed it’s around 11pm which is just too late for me. I’d definitely do it again, but in spring/summer months and when it’s possible for me to go to bed consistently between 9 and 10pm.

MareofBeasttown · 27/06/2021 08:39

@BlueLobelia Thank you! I should add that I only did this when my kids were 12 and 8. I could not have managed it when they were little. Used to get to bed by 10 pm at that time.

HelenHywater · 27/06/2021 08:43

I've done this for a while as well - at least as long as I've been a single parent. I wake up have coffee, do some exercise and do a few jobs too. (work emails, house admin etc). I don't do the planning part though until I sit down to work after the kids are at school.

It's a lovely time of day and it sets me up having that time alone. (Actually it doesn't have to be early, it just has to be 2 hours before anyone else gets up and I have to start work).

it's similar to the Miracle Morning book guy too I think.

newnortherner111 · 27/06/2021 09:07

@supermoonrising I agree about enough sleep and consistency. No late night tv, IPlayer and other catch up services are my friend so to speak.

Couldn't do 5am though, 6am will do for me!

Chikapu · 27/06/2021 09:10

The first rule of 5 am club should be that absolutely no one talks about 5 am club.
No one cares what time other people get up and how self-righteous they feel about it.

Kokosrieksts · 27/06/2021 09:13

Sounds awful. The times my baby’s woken me up at 5am, I’ve found the day drag so long. By the time other people are awake and ready to do things I want to have a nap. Definitely not for me.

Nothing to do with being self righteous- everything to do with being self indulgent!
Bt 7am I have had a spa shower, a facial, hot coffee, a facial, a yoga session, meditation, a foot massage.
I don't mind sharing that information!!

peachyandkeen · 27/06/2021 09:16

Completely agree @supermoonrising ; routine and sufficient sleep are the key, no matter what time you actually go to bed / wake up!

THIS sounds like bliss and I’m 100% envious and want to do the same! Do you mind me asking @speakout is it a professional foot massage or do you use a machine? Also what facial product do you use please? Smile

PizzaCrust · 27/06/2021 09:32

Don’t do this, as someone who has to get up at 5am for work. By 4pm you’re shattered and it’s depressing waking up that early in the winter when it’s still pitch black outside.

If I didn’t have to, I wouldn’t.

peachyandkeen · 27/06/2021 09:44

So what exactly is 5am club OP?

What’s the 20:20:20 part?

speakout · 27/06/2021 09:45

peachyandkeen
Neither a machine or a professional.
I use my own hands.

I use a range of facial products- a foaming face wash, twice a week exfoliator, eye cream, serum, toner, moisturiser.
None of them are expensive or fancy.

AnUnoriginalUsername · 27/06/2021 09:48

That period of sleep between 5 and 8 is the one that actually makes me feel alive again. Even before DS if I had to be up at 6 for work (not often) I'd be ready for bed by 6pm and just be hanging out my arse until I could go back to bed. I have energy in the middle of the day, I'm neither an early bird nor night owl.

Thatsjustwhatithink · 27/06/2021 09:59

Couldn't you just get up at 5am for your own reasons and because you want to rather than following some wanky bloke?

If you want to...do it.

Darbs76 · 27/06/2021 10:00

Never heard of a 5am club but I now get up at 5.35 daily in the week, 6.15 weekends. I love the early mornings, I go to bed early, so my day starts and ends early. Gone are the late nights!

toffeebutterpopcorn · 27/06/2021 10:06

@AnyFucker

5am club ?

Not hardcore enough for me. 3am…that’s where the real insomniacs hang out.

Mememememe! I’m actually a 3:30-er.

Sounds like hard work at any time of day!

Thing with people is their body clocks are set differently. I feel totally different during the day if I get up at 8:30am rather than my normal 7:30am. It's nothing to do with the amount of sleep I get-I can be in bed by 10:30pm and still feel drained getting up at 7:30, let me get up at 8:30 and I can easily go to bed at 2am and not struggle.
I think my natural cycle would be, get up 8:30, have a nap from 5pm-7pm, go to bed at 2am.
However I have a friend who struggles after 9pm, and never sleeps in beyond 5am, often being up by 4am.

Nothing to do with being self righteous- everything to do with being self indulgent!
Bt 7am I have had a spa shower, a facial, hot coffee, a facial, a yoga session, meditation, a foot massage.
But I would rather do that at 9pm in the evening and go to bed relaxed afterwards. Why would it be better to do it in the morning?

Handsnotwands · 27/06/2021 11:22

My husband has to get up at 5am for work. It’s hideous. He lives his life out of step with everyone else and is permanently knackered. He’s been doing it for 15 years and hasn’t acclimatized yet

Sounds like hard work at any time of day!*

Acts of self nurture - doesn't feel like work. I light a candle, listen to uplifting music and honour my divine spirit. It feels like play- not work.

Chikapu · 27/06/2021 11:28

I do that every day before bed, it's hardly worth mentioning really, is it?

speakout · 27/06/2021 11:31

MargaretThursday-But I would rather do that at 9pm in the evening and go to bed relaxed afterwards. Why would it be better to do it in the morning?

Lots of reasons. I feel restored and energised in the morning after a good sleep. These morning rituals set me up for the day ahead, help me get prepared- no rushing. A pleasant easy morning sets the tone for the day ahead. If I start the day with a good frame of mind it tends to last for the whole day ahead.
The house is quiet. With everone asleep I know I won't be interrupted, so I can have solitude during yoga practice or meditation without family members around or noises from TV or dishwashers.
Mostly not even any outside street noise either, it's before neighbours set off for work.
It's a time of day that is peaceful, quiet and I can be guaranteed solitude.
That wouldn't happen at 9pm.

I do face wash and moisturiser before bed. It's just a task that needs doing.

A spa shower sounds great though - you mean like this?

www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/aqualusso-alto-w1-1350-x-800mm-steam-and-whirlpool-bath-polar-white

One day, I will be rich enough for this!

Re the 5am, I think a lot depends where you live in terms of the value of that. It's not my body clock but I'd have to live somewhere very lovely to find that worth it.

In winter, three hours of darkness seems a strange way to start the day tbh.

Ostara212 · 27/06/2021 11:37

I mean this shower sorry
That price is okay

I think a lot of basic stuff that needs doing is now somehow seen as "self care". I do hate that phrase though.
