5am club - anyone here got any experiences?

Posting for traffic!

Has anyone joined the 5am club? Official one (Robin Sharma), rather than just waking up at 5am because work / kids / other commitments.

If so: how did you / do you find it? Did it benefit your life?

@Youdoyoutoday

No, just fucking no!! This is no way beneficial to anyone unless you're going to start your bed time routine at 9pm and if you have kids that stay up till 8 then arse about for what feel like 16 hours till they actually go to bloody sleep, then no one wins.

And have you actually seen 5am in the morning??? It's boring as hell especially in the winter unless you have some massive house where you can actually get up and make a coffee without waking up everyone else.
God, I can't think of anything worse than actually wanting to wake up at 5am without the promise of an airplane to catch.

5am indeed? Tut tut!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

In my view it isn't officially morning until after 6. Ds often has me up around 430-5 and honestly I'm on my arse by 3pm. It feels very much like it's still the middle of the night and that you're the only 1 in the world awake and makes the days feel really long. I certainly wouldn't choose to get up any earlier than 6

FizzyPink · 26/06/2021 23:35

So what exactly are you supposed to do at 5am?

If I did it I’d probably just end up pissing around on my phone until it was time to get up. I don’t do anything particularly productive with my free time now, I can’t imagine being any more motivated 3 hours before I usually wake up.

Titsywoo · 26/06/2021 23:38

I'm too much of a nightowl for this. I get my me time at 11pm for an hour or so when everyone else is asleep then I get my 7 hours. Going to sleep at 10pm would be depressing as I wouldn't have an evening to relax. Also getting up when it is still dark in the winter would be shit.

Radio4ordie · 26/06/2021 23:43

Is this Sharma a man or woman, do they have small children?
I’m baffled by anyone who willingly gets up before 7am to be honest.
I’m a night owl and in an ideal world would work 5pm to midnight and snooze all day but sadly my children/job/school run require a 7am wake up. I can’t imagine feeling better getting up in the nighttime.

SRS29 · 26/06/2021 23:45

@Viviennemary

Ive heard about this but I don't think it's for me. Still I could do with getting up a bit earlier.
100% this
stiieeph · 26/06/2021 23:46

I get up at 5am every day. Normally don't get to bed & sleep until 12.30-1am. Not enough hours in the day for me, and yes I'm always dead on my feet. You get used to it eventually. I do love the feeling of having accomplished so much already by the time most people are just getting up

Sounds like torture. Surely some of those tasks are less important than proper rest? Why did you start doing it?
TheMoth · 27/06/2021 00:05

I am up at 6 every day for work. I would rather be up at 7, but I have 2 kids to get out of the house by 730, so it's not feasible. Igo to sleep between 10 and 11.
Dh is up at 5 and leaves at 6. It's killing him.

There's nothing extra special about getting up early. It's just a necessary evil if you have to be in work by 7 or 8am.

PegasusReturns · 27/06/2021 00:06

Yes I did! Fallen off the wagon post covid though.

I had a professional coach who was a “member” and got me into it. Really transformative.I used to take 90 minutes to do pilates, walk or read.

It really helped ground me and I loved the time to myself before DC were up and about.

I’m going on hols in a few weeks but when I get back I plan to restart.

PatchyTwat · 27/06/2021 00:26

Those people who can do 5am I’m interested what time you go to bed? Why is 5am magical when you could do all that stuff at say 11pm?

Most 5amers I’ve seen have shown up on “The state of linked in” usually with a Rolex and a Ferrari and an obscene amount of wanky ###s

@stiieeph Out of interest why are you getting up so early and going to bed so late? is it a choice?

Yes, you may feel you are getting used to it but the knock-one effects for your health in later life could be pretty catastrophic.

I think there are studies that show that prolonged extreme sleep deprivation like this has been linked to dementia. Also heart disease and cancer.

Just roughly what sort of industry do you work in @stiieeph? And are you self employed? Smile

@PegasusReturns Ah interesting!

And what time were you going to sleep when you were getting up at 5?

Were there any downsides?

Best of luck with the restart!

4 am rise for me...

FrenchieFromGrease · 27/06/2021 01:06

I did this for about 9 months, and after the first week waking up at 5am just came naturally. It actually helped me sleep better in general and I was in a really good sleep routine (9.30pm to 5am)

Usually I'm not a morning person, but having time in the morning when the house is quiet and the day is fresh just feels different. I used the extra time to exercise and study for my degree. You feel a real sense of accomplishment that you've already done so much early in the day. It is something you need to do by choice though. Being forced to wake up at that time by jobs and kids is not the same.

Sadly I fell off the wagon and haven't had the motivation to get back on it yet.

Give it a go OP!

stopgap · 27/06/2021 01:18

Sounds awful. I’m an early rising insomniac, waking anywhere between 3 and 4 for the day. But that’s when I was going to bed too early. A sleep doctor nudged my bedtime to 11.30pm, and I sleep until 6.30.

GetOffThatPhone · 27/06/2021 01:30

I'm aiming for the 10am Club.

BritWifeInUSA · 27/06/2021 04:44

At 5 am I’m already at my desk. Is there a 3 am club?

FindingMeno · 27/06/2021 04:53

I'm an early riser but didn't know this 5am club was a thing.
My energy levels are best in the morning and it's when I get a nice bit of solitude. I love quiet and my own company early o'clock.

MrsMonkeyBear · 27/06/2021 05:12

I'm part of the 5am club (technically 4am) but for work. I work 6am-2pm 4 days a week but still get up early on my days off.

I usually just lounge around in my pjs drinking coffee until 6am. I'll preload the washing machine/dishwasher, I'll do a quick tidy up in the living room etc before everyone gets up at 7am. All my housework is done by 10am at the latest and I can enjoy the rest of the day.

endofjune · 27/06/2021 05:23

I honestly think this sleep pattern was a major contributor in my dads premature death.

He always woke early and was bloody irritating with it to be totally honest - banging about and exclaiming that it was a glorious morning / best part of the day / everyone else was missing out and bringing people unwanted cups of tea.

As he got older the 6am wake up became 5, then 4. It was problematic for relationships as he was nodding off by 8 in the evening, he was confused and not functioning well during the day because of lack of sleep, sometimes waking at 3.

It’s something I’m mindful of as I used to wake early. Then I had a baby and he wakes early so I have no choice Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/06/2021 05:28

I work in dementia and 3am is when some residents wake up. Luckly most will go back to sleep again.

WhatILoved · 27/06/2021 05:30

My alarm is set at 5. I read or exercise and put a wash on. Love the time to myself. I go to bed at 1030/11.

NumberTheory · 27/06/2021 05:35

Before kids I was an early bird. I didn't deliberately get up at 5, but I often naturally woke up then and I'd get up and get on with things. It is really quiet and easy to concentrate so I used to get lots done. And I love being up to see the dawn.

Since kids though... I still wake up early, but I'm knackered and want to stay in bed flicking through MN or playing something mindless on my phone! If I try and do anything important I find my brains foggy until about 9 am anyway.

So I think it may not be anything magical about the time of day. But changing your routine to try and embed new habits seems very reasonable. It's not as if you have much to lose from trying it, is it?
