To hate being bought flowers?

They look beautiful. They’re a lovely gift.

But

I can’t arrange them. I cut them wrong. My vases never seem big enough to fit them all in. The water needs changing daily and even then they are droopy and browning within a week and are depressing to look at. Then I’m left with a load of drippy green yuck to get rid of and a vase to wash.

Agree. A house plant is marginally better but I'll still end up killing it.

Meme69 · 25/06/2021 17:15

I agree. Its the gift of death... Here have something beautiful and watch them die.

Comedycook · 25/06/2021 17:15

I'm always grateful but I'd prefer chocolates the cash

LubaLuca · 25/06/2021 17:16

If you're refreshing the water, they shouldn't be browning and drooping so quickly. Are you putting them somewhere too warm and/or bright? Even the cheapest bunch from Aldi will last well in the cool parts of my house (actually Aldi flowers tend to live longer than the expensive florist ones, but I can't tell my husband).

saveforthat · 25/06/2021 17:16

YABU flowers are a delight. I always have them in the house and looking after them is a labour of love. My son bought me a subscription, one bunch lasted a month. Also this thread has been done before.

Lucia574 · 25/06/2021 17:16

Disagree. I love having cut flowers in the house and buy them for myself!

Grin yes!

Nah, I like being given flowers. Hate receiving house plants though. At least cut flowers have an expiry date built in, with house plants you've to try keep the bloody thing alive.

Probably! I’m useless at having flowers!

Also the only cool place in the house is the bathroom. And I want them somewhere I can watch them die. Grin

Ah here. If we applied that to every thread on MN, it would be a quiet place. MN thrives on rehashing arguments.

Bonitalazenia · 25/06/2021 17:19

I could have written this post!

Graphista · 25/06/2021 17:20

I'm the death knell for plant life but even I can keep flowers going for at least a week!

How are you cutting them? Hard to imagine how you're going wrong

I don't change out the water at all, I put water and sachet of food in case, cut and put in flowers...Job done!

BUT it may depend on what kind of flowers, where you're buying them from and where you're placing them.

I have a favourite local florist, I tend to prefer fairly robust flowers (Gerbera, sunflowers, roses, gyp) and I place them in a sunny window which they seem to like.

No. This thread hasn’t. One, or several, like it may have been. But this specific thread hasn’t. I know because I’ve never done it before. Wink

So? Does it matter?

I imagine the vast majority of threads are variations on a theme.

@UhtredRagnarson I agree with you...I don't like cut flowers. I can just about tolerate a bunch of daffodils.

Bargebill19 · 25/06/2021 17:22

You are not alone. Can’t stand them. Despite me telling people not buy them as I have cats, no vases and nowhere to put them- the bloody things still keep coming.
Fortunately my neighbour is a grabby one, she will happily take whatever I get given. Otherwise I just bin them.

UhtredRagnarson · 25/06/2021 17:22

How are you cutting them?

Wrongly. Grin

I cut them and squish the ends because google says to do that. But then they’re too short. And some are too long. And some stick the wrong way and won’t stay put when I turn them. And then there’s all the leaves. I take off so much but still there is a rainforest in my vase!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 25/06/2021 17:24

Flowers look beautiful as they die. Sometimes I cut them, put them into a vase and then deliberately kill them so I can take photos of them. I bought a realistic skull as a prop for some of the photos!

Which subscription company do you have please?
FluffyBlueJumper · 25/06/2021 17:25

I agree. Money was very tight for years in our house and it makes me feel a little sick when I imagine what I could have bought for the price of nice flowers.

However our local Lidl sells "past their best" flowers at 1€ for 3 bunches and I buy some regularly.

Now that sounds a very good use of them!

Yes I've been really skint before and my lovely friend has sent me expensive flowers for my birthday and obviously I'm grateful but it's kind of irritating to see £30-40 worth of flowers just waiting to die
GrrrlPwr · 25/06/2021 17:29

I have the solution!
There is a style of vase you need. Open bouquet. Ditch the wrapping. Snip at an angle 2 cm off all the ends with IKEA £1 flower snips. Plonk in the vase of water.

To change the water grab all stems, tip out water, put new water in.
