To hate being bought flowers?

They look beautiful. They’re a lovely gift.

But

I can’t arrange them. I cut them wrong. My vases never seem big enough to fit them all in. The water needs changing daily and even then they are droopy and browning within a week and are depressing to look at. Then I’m left with a load of drippy green yuck to get rid of and a vase to wash.

I do too. I don't own a vase. I like flowers in the garden, the kind that come back each year, bulbs or self seeding flowers. I buy the odd £1 bunch of daffodils in early spring and put them in a glass but that's it.

Lemonmelonsun · 25/06/2021 17:31

Oh gosh no! I adore them! Infact I had something today!
Beautiful and usually last a good week and I don't change the water daily! No!.
They need to have lower leaves taken off before putting in vase and ends trimming as well.

Check out ‘Freddie’s Flowers’. They are amazing. They are £25 per box, but if you look after them (he shows you how on YouTube) They can last 3 weeks. So, I treat myself to a box every 3 weeks. Smile

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 17:32

When we have flowers if DH or DD does them they last ages and when I do it they get sad fast.

I have watched and they do the same as me...

Could I be part demon or something?

gonow · 25/06/2021 17:33

GrrrlPwr · 25/06/2021 17:33

I agree. A plant in a pot that holds water is much better.

QueenBee52 · 25/06/2021 17:38

I love flowers ...

I fill my house every week from my blooming garden and adore them.. 🌸🌺

SunSeaSurfGin · 25/06/2021 17:38

Prefer cut flowers to a houseplant

Cut flowers last 2 weeks look pretty going to die but I accept that. Houseplants you lovingly tend for a month then go away or life happens then it dies.

Flowers die without the effort

BreakfastOfWaffles · 25/06/2021 17:39

I love receiving flowers. I wouldn't expect them to last more than a week though. The best advice I can give is buy a bigger vase and chuck flowers after a week.

tigger1001 · 25/06/2021 17:40

I love flowers but hate real ones in the house as have bad hayfever. Thankfully no one buys me any.

MumblesAndMutters · 25/06/2021 17:45

Pop half a Milton tablet in the vase next time and you won’t need to change the water so often. It kills some of the bacteria that makes it go brown and yucky. This has changed my life!

Sprintfinish · 25/06/2021 17:46

I hate being given flowers. The cat eats them and now I have a toddler who will get to them if the cat doesn't. I don't have a vase anymore, so the last bunch I ungratefully received ended up in an old coffee jar out of reach. I'd rather have chocolate or wine, as most people who buy me gifts now know.

Kokosrieksts · 25/06/2021 17:47

It really isn’t that difficult. Change the water when you remember, every 2-3 days should be fine and throw old flowers out.
I love getting flowers.

JustDanceAddict · 25/06/2021 17:48

Agree!

Zari29 · 25/06/2021 17:53

Yanbu
Told dh very early on to not buy them. It's such a waste on me. I can walk by them everyday and never think to water them, or cut the stems and all the faff.

DappledThings · 25/06/2021 17:54

I hate them. Total pain in the arse to open up and arrange and they drop bits after a couple of days then you end up with slimy water with bits in to dispose of.

I got so cross with them last time I was sent some I left them on the outside table so at least they wouldn't drop bits in the house and they then blew over. This means my one vase is now smashed and I feel relieved if I'm ever given anymore I can legitimately just chuck them out because I have nothing to put them in!

Musmerian · 25/06/2021 18:06

I love flowers and buy them regularly for myself. They look beautiful and smell lovely and it’s hardly that difficult to stick them in a vase and then throw them away when they’re dead. I bought myself a bunch of irises and freesias today on the way home from the lovely florist at the station.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 25/06/2021 18:16

I love flowers but I wouldn't want the really expensive bunches over say £20 as they do only last a short time, and I could think of some other things I need more. I am a bit of a houseplants killer but I like them too, I've just warned my family if they give me a plant I may well kill it so don't spend a fortune but I am fond of a Kalanchoe or an African violet or at Christmas a poinsettia or something like that.

SirenSays · 25/06/2021 18:30

I'd take fresh flowers over a house plant or wine any day. Even over chocolate if its something grim like milktray.
A few tips to make them less hassle; remove any greenery that would be sitting in the water, if you do that you won't have to change it daily. I never do anyway and mine last fine.
Take one flower and cut it down to size gradually checking how it looks in the vase. Then use that flower as a guide for the rest.
Don't overcrowd the vase, less is more. Its sometimes easier to split between two vases.

Graphista · 25/06/2021 18:35

@UhtredRagnarson

How are you cutting them?

Wrongly. Grin

I cut them and squish the ends because google says to do that. But then they’re too short. And some are too long. And some stick the wrong way and won’t stay put when I turn them. And then there’s all the leaves. I take off so much but still there is a rainforest in my vase!

Hahahahaha!

Ok - I would say you need good sharp strong scissors or secateurs even, cut them on the diagonal and DO NOT squish them!

That's how I do it.

I forgot to mention in earlier post I also strip off any leaves that will end up under water line as that seems to affect longevity too

AdaFuckingShelby · 25/06/2021 18:36

Me too! I aalways feel very ungrateful but I really don't like them. Here have some mutilated plants that cost a fortune. They look like they've been murdered to me. Cut down in their prime. Give me a plant in a pot any day.

Funnylittlefloozie · 25/06/2021 18:38

Flowers are a Big Thing in this house. My exH never ever bought me flowers, but my DP makes a point of buying them regularly. He doesn't go mad - just a Morrisons bouquet, but they are lovely and make me happy.

I have never heard of "squishing the ends of stems", and iwould say this is why your flowers die! Cut off an inch from the bottom of the stem, or however much you need to trim to fit in your vase, AT AN ANGLE, and don't squish the stems. Plonk in water, add a soluble aspirin or a teaspoon of bleach, and put them out-of glaring light. Trust me, they will last.

Interestingly, posh florists' bouquets don't seem to last as long as Morrisons flowers. Who knows why!

HappyWipings · 25/06/2021 18:42

Flowers are beautiful , but unfortunately they remind me of my abusive exh. He would buy me flowers to 'apologise' after nasty behaviour. I do sometimes pick up some daffs in m and s though , I can make an exception for those as they're cheerful yet cheap.
