To hate being bought flowers?

They look beautiful. They’re a lovely gift.

But

I can’t arrange them. I cut them wrong. My vases never seem big enough to fit them all in. The water needs changing daily and even then they are droopy and browning within a week and are depressing to look at. Then I’m left with a load of drippy green yuck to get rid of and a vase to wash.

Agree! Total waste! My MIL (who is lovely) used to bring them every time she visited. Dreaded them. Tried to make it my husband’s job to sort them out, but he conveniently forgot.

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 20:42

I love the smell of flowers when they are growing in the garden.

Carboholic · 25/06/2021 20:44

“Here are some plant genitals which you can watch as they slowly die.”

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 20:44

I also think it's a shame when famous people die and there's masses of cut, wrapped flowers laid on the ground outside the house or wherever. Getting all wet in the rain and blowing in the wind. Seems such a waste. Presumably they all get binned off by the council eventually.

Cushionsnotpillows · 25/06/2021 20:52

I think your Google is broken OP, or it was a joke article, why on Earth would you squash the stems and effectively stop the water being absorbed up the stem that keeps the flower alive? That's why yours are dying! No more squashing, cut stems with a sharp knife at an angle, remove all lower leaves so none are in the water and things should be better.

UhtredRagnarson · 25/06/2021 20:57

I’m loving that there are so many others who hate getting cut flowers too!

WRT squashing the stems. It’s just the bit at the bottom. About an inch. The reason given was to increase the surface area of inside the stem so it absorbs more water. I think it might have been youtube rather than google.

I always feel that cut flowers are a waste of money. For me, at least, they are. For someone who enjoys them more than I do, they aren't. I try to appreciate the thought behind them, but there's still a feeling that they were a waste...

BackforGood · 25/06/2021 21:40

The worst thing is when someone sends you flowers when you're ill!

Completely disagree with this. When I've had flowers sent, each time they catch my eye, it reminds me that someone loves me and is thinking of me at a difficult time. Ditto when I had my babies. You don't need to faff about "arranging" them if that isn't your 'thing'. Just put them in a vase.

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 21:47

If I'm ill or had just had a baby i'm all for useful gifts from people thinking of me. Just not cut flowers.

shivawn · 25/06/2021 21:53

I'm not a big fan either. Actually I'm not a fan of gifts in general, I love shopping and buy myself everything I could possibly want. I just feel bad when people spend money buying me stuff I don't want or need.

georgarina · 25/06/2021 21:56

I hate being bought flowers...you just watch them die!

Tacono1 · 25/06/2021 22:07

They are ephemeral beauty. That is the point.

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 22:13

I like beauty to be a bit longer lasting Smile

0None0 · 26/06/2021 08:01

@Tacono1

They are ephemeral beauty. That is the point.
Ephemeral beauty for spoilt privileged western women and the expense of the health and livelihood of East African women fighting to feed their families

The flower industry is evil

NeedNewKnees · 26/06/2021 08:13

I love them, especially the scented flowers like freesias and sweet peas. I am cutting a posy from the garden twice a week at the moment and the house smells lovely.

Youdoyoutoday · 26/06/2021 08:24

Oh I love fresh flowers though I'm not so great at arranging them but always get some from aldi, they have a lovely selection.

Cut the stems at an angle and cut all leafs that will sit under the water as they rot and will make the flowers die quicker, you can put a little drop of bleach in the watch to keep it clean.

M0rT · 26/06/2021 08:27

If you get florist flowers in a box with a bag of water just leave them there.
Take a picture, send to whoever sent to you with thanks and when they die throw them in the bin still in the box.
But if your putting them in a vase, cut the stems to match the vase height not too close to the nodes on the stem and don't squish them.
Take off any leaves below the waterline and you can use a hair bobble to tie them together again before putting in the vase if they won't stay where your putting them.
You could also get very active on social media about the plight of the bees and how cute flowers are contributing to it, might reduce the amount of flowers your sent Grin

Youdoyoutoday · 26/06/2021 08:27

*water not watch

M0rT · 26/06/2021 08:27

"cut not cute!

0None0 · 26/06/2021 08:35

Literally no one on this thread seems to care that the flower industry forces East African women into slave Labour, with no PPE to protect from burning their lungs out with the powerful chemicals they use

And some on this thread have husbands who buy locally grown seasonal flowers or know the source.
MissJeanLouise · 26/06/2021 08:42

I used to feel the same - more faff than it was worth and didn’t really know how not to kill them. When I was diagnosed with cancer and got sent LOADS by friends and family, my initial thought was ‘What a waste’. However, I dutifully dug out vases and tried to arrange them all around the house in places where the dog wouldn’t knock them over. I started to really enjoy doing it and loved looking at my beautiful flowers and being really thankful to think of the people who were thinking of me. Some friends would send them regularly all the time I was off work and I loved it. I now give/send flowers to others a lot more!

Jabbinell · 26/06/2021 08:45

I hate flowers, unless dried or good quality fakes. Its like a part time job i don’t want, too much work.

Jabbinell · 26/06/2021 08:50

Sorry job comment looks crass now as just read up thread about worker’s conditions.
I still hate flowers as they signify death to me, they are dead but you still have to do stuff to them, cba.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/06/2021 08:51

Flowers don't live for ever even if you leave them in the ground. The flower dies off leaving a seed or fruit, it's a natural process. I don't get the 'gift of death' type comments. I love flowers in the house although I am also rubbish at arranging them.
