Reporting a neighbour AIBU?

Rhayader · 24/06/2021 18:18

Our neighbours have recently had their garden landscaped. They have chopped down 5 mature native trees and replaced them with palm trees.

We live in a conservation area and these trees were protected. I want to report them to the conservation area but DH says I’m being ridiculous. AIBU?

Don’t want to drip feed: these trees are on a planning application from the same neighbour 5 years ago where they have sought permission to trim them back 20% each so there is an official record of their existence. I believe you can get a fine for chopping down trees here (London).

That said, I would definitely report them!!

Ohhok · 25/06/2021 05:54

Please report this. Trees are important! Doesn’t make you a Karen.
These idiots who are saying the trees don’t matter are not normal (& probably think Dubai is the most beautiful place on earth).
These “landscapers” need to be fined so they learn their lesson and don’t go around murdering even more trees.

@Wellshellsbells

What is going on?? It’s their land! I wonder how unhappy you would be if they were blocking your light or putting leaves all over your garden?
Their land or not, you cant cut them down if theres a TPO on them. I live on a road that has trees with TPOs and if people want to do something to do them they have to put in a planning permission application to the council. Permission to do anything is more likely to be denied though unless its on grounds of safety. Im actually really suprised a contractor chopped them down.

Doesn't matter one fucking bit it's their land. I have TPO'd trees. They're on my land and I get to enjoy them but as far as ownership goes, my only real right is paying for their upkeep.
Onlinedilema · 25/06/2021 06:23

Report them and the idiots who cut them down.

Temp023 · 25/06/2021 06:31

I would be calling them ignorant shits to their faces, This is the very worst type of vandalism!
A couple of bottles of weed killer under their new palm trees might not go amiss.
Palm trees, FFS!

Tulipomania · 25/06/2021 06:40

Please do report them. Mature trees are a hugely valuable natural resource - which is why they are protected.

Weedkiller doesn't generally kill whole trees. Not even "a couple of bottles" Also, it works by systemic action through the leaves, which then process the toxins and deliver them via the plant cell structure down to the internal structure of the roots. I suppose if you're going to chuck a couple of bottles of weedkiller on the ground as revenge, the best way to do it is wearing a dark eye mask and criminal stripey t shirt in the middle of the night, whilst having an accomplice cling with their back to a nearby corner wall on the lookout, y'know, like proper avengers of justice.

This!

Wellshellsbells
Move to a tower block no problem with trees blocking light.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/06/2021 08:24

putting leaves all over your garden?

Crime of the century, this.

Poorlykitten · 25/06/2021 08:24

I think report. Might teach them not to do it elsewhere.

JellyBabiesFan · 25/06/2021 08:37

I am surprised that they found someone to cut down 5 trees if there really was a tpo on them or they didn’t have permission

Trades people are really hard to come by at the moment. There are plenty of cowboys popping up to take their place. I am going to stick my neck out and suggest the sort of person who wants palm trees will employ a cowboy.

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/06/2021 08:51

Report them and ignore the idiots who claim they can do what they want on their own land. Clueless.

LucindaT73 · 25/06/2021 08:57

What a weird sense of morality/ ethics here from some people.

You seem to think it's okay for people to carry out criminal behaviour and not report it, if whatever they have committed is irreversible.

So

murder
car theft
family silver theft
bank fraud
and many more.....

Any and all of these can leave the victim without something that can't be 'got back.'

So you are happy to turn a blind eye?

And those who say the trees can't be brought back- how about considering being told to buy new ones? At the cost of several hundred each if they are mature trees.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 25/06/2021 09:20

Im actually really suprised at the amount of people on this thread who dont care about tree conservation

Doesn’t surprise me at all. The amount of selfishness that exists in the world is exactly the reason we’re racing headlong into climate change.
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 25/06/2021 09:55

Its actually really saddening

Don't buy a property with protected trees 🤷 Actually, don't buy a property with trees or surrounded by trees.

It's beyond ridiculous: what makes you choose that particular property is the look of the area and the property itself. Trying to change it for something you wouldn't have bought in the first place is unbelievably stupid.

Poorlykitten · 25/06/2021 10:14

What’s the point in have protected trees if people are just going to ignore it and chop them down anyway. Trees are a very valuable resource. It is very sad that people are more bothered about leaves on their garden #firstworldproblems

billyt · 25/06/2021 10:24

Report. I would in a heartbeat. If only, as said before, to make someone else being this arrogant think before breaking the law

There is a standard three-bedroom house near me being converted into a six bedroom HMO. Hasn't been approved yet, but they're cracking on at pace. No Party Wall Agreement with immediate neighbours either.

Same type of thought process - ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Arrogant bastards who think the rules only apply to others.

LJC1234 · 25/06/2021 10:30

If they had a company in there is every chance the council gave them permission.

We have recently had to apply to remove a tree due to the roots dancing pipes . All companies wanted confirmation the council had granted permission which they have .

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/06/2021 11:06

If they had a company in there is every chance the council gave them permission.

The permission would have to appear on the council’s website. If there is nothing there then there is no permit.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 25/06/2021 15:52

Report them, our environment is already on its knees. The world needs trees now more than ever, especially polluted cities. These people are criminals.
When I had trees in my garden cut back the tree surgeon needed proof of planning permission before he'd even take the job. Both your neighbours and the butchers who did it need to be held to account.

user1495223711 · 26/06/2021 11:50

OP do you know that the trees definitely have a TPO on them? I live in a conservation area but there's only one tree here that's protected. Them mentioning the tree on previous planning applications could just be them indicating the downtakings, not due to a TPO.
