Reporting a neighbour AIBU?

Rhayader · 24/06/2021 18:18

Our neighbours have recently had their garden landscaped. They have chopped down 5 mature native trees and replaced them with palm trees.

We live in a conservation area and these trees were protected. I want to report them to the conservation area but DH says I’m being ridiculous. AIBU?

Don’t want to drip feed: these trees are on a planning application from the same neighbour 5 years ago where they have sought permission to trim them back 20% each so there is an official record of their existence. I believe you can get a fine for chopping down trees here (London).

I’ve checked the council planning website and that’s when I found the application 5 years ago to trim the trees. There was nothing for this removal.

Do the posters who can’t see the point in reporting also think it would be ok for companies to get away with dumping chemicals? For flytippers not to be prosecuted? Because what they’ve already done can’t be undone either.

MumBowJumBow · 24/06/2021 20:55

@Eachpeachpears

It feels petty to report them. What can actually be gained from it other than frosty relations?
Why is it petty? They knew the trees had to stay, any frosty relation is on them Actions have consequences Genuinely, I'd like to know why you think this I'm ignoring Jelly as they are, as usual, being a boring goady dickhead
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/06/2021 20:59

Did they cut them down themselves or employ someone, does it make a difference if it's a tree feller who did it, who would get fined.

Tree surgeon should not have done, the whole industry needs regulating, they are such cowboys it's ridiculous what they get away with.

Report all their sorry arses OP.

frumpety · 24/06/2021 20:59

Ring the tree officer at the council then, it has either been done legally or it hasn't. If it hasn't been done legally someone will be in trouble, maybe your neighbours have taken into consideration the fine and decided it was worth it.

MuttiSauce · 24/06/2021 21:00

Can't believe the number of tree chopping incidents ive been reading on mn these past few days. What's wrong with these people.... Report op.. It'd be anonymous anyway.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/06/2021 21:01

What can be gained from this reporting them will not bring the trees back.
They can be asked to replace with similar.

SuperSecretSquirrels · 24/06/2021 21:01

Definitely report them. As others have said, it is anonymous so you won’t cause trouble for yourself.

They are selfish entitled buggers and deserve the fine that they have coming.

frumpety · 24/06/2021 21:04

I say that as there was someone locally who had a load of trees felled, knowing there was a TPO on them, got fined and paid it without complaint as had factored the cost in.

MumBowJumBow · 24/06/2021 21:12

Did they not have to replace them @frumpety? f not that's disgraceful

billy1966 · 24/06/2021 21:13

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

When people are publicly held to account and heavily fined it gives others that might consider doing it pause for thought.

I have zero time for some people following these types of rules for trees/planning etc. and others thinking they are completely above the law.

goddessofmischief · 24/06/2021 21:18

Report them. People should be held to account when they've done wrong. Ignoring is enabling. Hate this "Karen", "snitches get stitches" mentality. It's right up there with "be kind".

justanotherneighinparadise · 24/06/2021 21:19

Disgusting people. I’d report in a heart beat.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/06/2021 21:25

I couldn't agree more, billy1966.

Fine them, make them replace the trees, absolutely.

PartTimeLegend · 24/06/2021 21:28

Report them to the tree officer at your local council.

We need trees, and it really pisses me off when people don't give a toss, ignore the rules and do what they like. With any luck, they will be fined thousands. Serve them right.

Remoulade · 24/06/2021 21:28

@a8mint

I cant thibk of anything more petty and spiteful tgan reporting a neighbour fir cutting down their own tree. Nvm karma will get you!
A tree with a TPO, as in it's not the neighbours to do with as they wish. It's not the least bit spiteful and karma is bs. Get a grip.
Hawkins001 · 24/06/2021 21:29

the trees, omg.

frumpety · 24/06/2021 21:29

@MumBowJumBow no they didn't replace them exactly, they are exceedingly rich though, so could afford the fine and a planning consultant to fight their corner. Also they planted a lot of trees elsewhere on their property ( think they felled about six mature trees and planted about 30 to give you an idea of the size of the property ) so there was probably a bit of give and take over that.

tommyhoundmum · 24/06/2021 21:35

Palm trees!! What the f....?

Tossblanket · 24/06/2021 21:35

I don't think it's at all ridiculous.

If everyone did this the place would look a complete shit hole.

The fines for breaching a TPO can be eye watering.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 24/06/2021 21:38

Absolutely do it. In our borough a business took over premises and chopped down 10 trees in their land. They got a huge fine and had to do some conservation projects. Not even a conservation area!

That’s good news. These vandals would be less likely to do it if they didn’t think they would get away with it.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/06/2021 21:48

Please report them. Horrible destructive thing to do.

As for all the “why report, they’re only trees” - don’t be so ridiculous. Those trees have probably been alive longer than you have. They matter.

Womendohavevaginasnick · 24/06/2021 21:50

Definitely report.
Those asking what benefit if will do? Well, it might stop them being so ignorant in the future, mightn't it? Especially if it costs them money.

Rockdown2020 · 24/06/2021 22:05

I’m not usually one for reporting but they must have known that cutting these trees wasn’t allowed or at least had to be permitted so it should be followed up.

doublemonkey · 24/06/2021 22:06

Report them.
