Reporting a neighbour AIBU?

Rhayader · 24/06/2021 18:18

Our neighbours have recently had their garden landscaped. They have chopped down 5 mature native trees and replaced them with palm trees.

We live in a conservation area and these trees were protected. I want to report them to the conservation area but DH says I’m being ridiculous. AIBU?

Don’t want to drip feed: these trees are on a planning application from the same neighbour 5 years ago where they have sought permission to trim them back 20% each so there is an official record of their existence. I believe you can get a fine for chopping down trees here (London).

Please report, OP. It’s disgusting behaviour and they need to be held accountable.

newnortherner111 · 24/06/2021 20:02

Please report, and preferably include the evidence from the planning application.

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/06/2021 20:05

Report. They're criminals.

Large fines can be imposed for breaching TPO. I think I read once a homeowner was fined £60k. Shocking thing to do to fell mature trees, no wonder your upset about it, I would be too.

frumpety · 24/06/2021 20:15

If they were mature trees, they have a lifespan like everything, so there is the possibility that there was disease or some structural failing that meant the trees needed to come down even with a TPO on them. If they had a TPO there should be a planning record on your local council website of the application to fell the trees that might explain why it was done. If it was done legally.

thinkfast · 24/06/2021 20:16

We live in a conservation area. Whenever we get our trees trimmed the tree surgeons get permission from the local authority beforehand. If your neighbour engaged professionals to do the tree works, I'd be surprised if they hadn't done so.

Myusername33 · 24/06/2021 20:18

Yes you should report it, the neighbours and the contractors may be fined but they both deserve it. My ex partner is a tree surgeon and he would never do work in a conservation area without getting permission from the council first and neither would any other reputable company.

@Suzi888

Well I hope you never intend to sell your house, as you’ll need to declare a dispute with your neighbour. What do you hope to achieve exactly? They can’t magic them back. Hmm What they did was wrong, but I think you’ll get yourself into a lot of bother.
Why? Reporting someone for unlawfully lopping a tree does not mean the reporter creates a legal dispute ....thats bullshit. Anyway, you can report anonymously. You are just reporting the matter....the dispute will be between them and the council potentially. It has nothing to do with you.
bananamonkey · 24/06/2021 20:19

I live in a conservation area and we had a tree removed when we moved in, the tree surgeon applied for the TPO to be removed on our behalf.

Maggiesfarm · 24/06/2021 20:22

Reporting your neighbours won't bring the trees back. What would be the point?

Peach01 · 24/06/2021 20:22

Report them. There's no point in having the trees protected if everyone ignores it.

Beautiful3 · 24/06/2021 20:28

Yes report them.

a8mint · 24/06/2021 20:28

I cant thibk of anything more petty and spiteful tgan reporting a neighbour fir cutting down their own tree.
Nvm karma will get you!

frumpety · 24/06/2021 20:29

Replanting with palm trees in a conservation area does seem a bit odd though , unless they have planted native species but they haven't grown enough yet for you to see them ? They do take a good few years to get established.

Chloemol · 24/06/2021 20:33

You report to your planning enforcement team at your local authority

goingtotown · 24/06/2021 20:33

Report them. It will be anonymous.

warmandtoasty2day · 24/06/2021 20:34

a certain person posting on here is an entitled fuck wit from their previous threads recently.

This!!
seepingweeping · 24/06/2021 20:39

Well they can't put them back can they. I don't see the point in reporting.

1starwars2 · 24/06/2021 20:43

Report the tree murderers.
It's a terrible thing to destroy mature protected trees needlessly.

Sweettea1 · 24/06/2021 20:45

What can be gained from this reporting them will not bring the trees back.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 24/06/2021 20:48

Oh op just no. They're gone now don't be, dare I say it, a Karen.

annacondom · 24/06/2021 20:50

Trees are so important. These people should defo be reported. You can report anonymously. Ring the council and ask to speak to the person who deals with tree preservation orders.

Learningtofeminist · 24/06/2021 20:51

Tree surgeons who abide by the law face unfair competition if others are allowed to ignore it so I’d report just based on that.
