To be scared of my neighbour? Weird noises at nights...

So this is going to be very messy and long..
We moved here 2 years ago, we live in 2 semi detached house and our neighbour is on our right.

We live in cul de sac and the area is very quiet and peaceful.
I dont work right now due to taking care of our young child and being pregnant with our second so I am home all days.

My neighbour is a man in his ( I believe 50s)
He is very shy when you try to say hello but usually kind, we don't have problems and never had.
He lives alone and have no family or friends, nobody ever visited him for the last 2 years..
He was always alone on christmas, easter or other celebrations..
We would check on him through the covid situation when he would not leave his house for few days at all and we would do some food shopping for him, he was very happy with the help.
I would give him christmas cards but never had one back (not that I expected him to give one! I have purerly felt sorry for him)
I would also give him a portion of christmas dinner last year and he was very happy although never really came back with dishes , he just left them outside our door 2 weeks after..

Our landlord did say to us when we first moved here, that our neighbour is weird and nobody in the road likes him but I never asked questions.

I wouldn't care about the way He chose to live if not the fact that he works night shifts every other week and every time he leaves the house, you can hear noises from his house like someone is still inside which is odd because he does live on his own.
As I mentioned before...
He never even had a friend coming over...

We share walls and it usually takes about 5 mins after he leaves around midnight and then you can hear someone coming down the stairs inside his house .

I dont know why, I am scared of this man and always find him a bit weird, it shouldn't really be in my intesrest whats happening inside his house but the whole thing is just odd.

Despite all this..

He never goes anywhere except his job where he works 12 hours shifts around 4 times a week.

I really don't think its an Animal...
You can tell the difference between a person and a car surely ?
I dont know.
I cant sleep now thinking about this again.
Something was upstairs and went down to the kitchen , have opened some shelfs then went back in upstairs!
All around 5 mins after he left at midnight today.

It's identical twins.

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:14

Well, it's got to be a person, whether he know they're there or not, is the next question.

Wait- are your lofts partitioned?

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:15

@JaneJeffer

It's identical twins.
Omg that would be perfect!
Mikadua23 · 24/06/2021 01:15

I am sooo used to the noises through the walls and I know when he gets his food heated in the microwave, that's how thin those walls are....
We share living room walls with upstairs bedroom walls.
He lives his TV on for the whole time he's in the house.

Do you share a loft? Or are the two sides bricked up so they're two separate spaces?

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 24/06/2021 01:18

Not liking the sound of that to be honest Confused how bizarre!

Mikadua23 · 24/06/2021 01:20

@BishBashBoshBush no, we don't share our lofts- thank god, I would probably die by now with heart attack lol

Do you hear water running? If it's someone secretly living there they would need to drink and wash when he's out. If you only hear water running when he's home then he would know there's someone there.

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:21

Phew! I was getting freaked out for you then!

Blondiney · 24/06/2021 01:22

Well that’s me lying in bed at one in the morning, scared shitless. Cheers, OP! 👀

PatchyTwat · 24/06/2021 01:22

Aaaaaand now I can’t sleep and I’m not even you.

I’m voting wife not allowed out ever.

I’d have to go with breaking in when he’s out and claiming you thought there was a fire, oops sorry I’ll pay for your door so glad there wasn’t an actual fire sooorry!”

Mikadua23 · 24/06/2021 01:23

My husband does not seem concerned, he tells me to just get on with my life and forget about the whole thing Grin
I have just watched waaay too many criminal documentaries and now tell myself that he probably is an abducter

Could you check the electoral role to see if another person is registered at the address? Or land registry to see if someone co-owns the house or is on the mortgage?

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:25

It's freaky that she heard the person going downstairs after he's left, implying they were up there until then. If it's a normal situation they would be downstairs then go up. Not the other way around.

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:26

Are there any lights on upstairs or anywhere in the house when you hear the movements?

Mikadua23 · 24/06/2021 01:27

I will add that I tried to google him as I know his Surname because of the amount of parcels but it looks like there's nothing....

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 24/06/2021 01:27

If you are really that concerned you have two options...

  1. call and express your concerns to the police.
  2. stage and intervention and break in Grin

Are you sure he hasn’t got a pet and keeps the radio or tv on for it? You’d be surprised how much noise a cat can make running down the stairs. When mine does it bangs the whole way down.

Mikadua23 · 24/06/2021 01:28

@BishBashBoshBush well, there's always a light downstairs 24/7 looks like a side lamp

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 24/06/2021 01:28

Or actually 3 - dig a bit deeper. Why doesn’t anyone like him?

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:30

Yeah but a cat can't open cupboards. I'd be properly in investigation mode if I were you. Or I would call the police with concerns that there is someone in the property.

BishBashBoshBush · 24/06/2021 01:30

@Wheresmybiscuit3

Or actually 3 - dig a bit deeper. Why doesn’t anyone like him?
Yes! Good point. I like this plan plus extra surveillance.
MegaCityOne · 24/06/2021 01:32

I still think it is a Lou Todd and Andy Pipkin situation. Lou, the neighbour you know, goes out after looking after Andy all day. Tucks Andy up in bed. Door closes, Andy, gets up and goes downstairs for 12 hours.

If the Thing you hear isn’t a ghost, or a heavy footed animal, those 12 hours are long enough to make an escape.

Mikadua23 · 24/06/2021 01:33

@Wheresmybiscuit3
I guess because he's so weird ?
Hmm

He has told us once that he made the other neighbours cut their tree due to being it too big apparently, but I don't know the whole story ...

OP posts:
Wheresmybiscuit3 · 24/06/2021 01:34

But what makes him so weird? That might give you some clues
