To ask if it’s worth having a holiday in the UK?

Right, I’ve coped pretty well so far, the past 16 months has been pretty difficult for many and I feel pretty bad about this but I need a holiday. A change of scenery! Some nice weather chilling food and drinks. Obviously it’s limited where you can go at the moment and we are looking at a staycation perhaps (it’s just me and DP) but everything is booked up or seriously overpriced in the UK.

Not sure if it’s worth it but I’m pretty desperate here… ( I need this for my mental health)

Can any of you recommend places to go for a couples getaway in the UK?

Hopefully things will open up soon for international travel. I think it’s been good to explore more of our country than we normally would have. I feel a bit sorry for people missing out on how wonderful the UK is, but each to their own. UK this year for us but praying for somewhere hot at Christmas. Family in Australia and good friends in SA but both look unlikely. We shall see. In the meantime I’ve cracked my Greek Islands book open for summer 2022.

I can wholeheartedly recommend The Hog hotel in Pakefield Suffolk. We went in October just before London entered tier 3 and it was wonderful. Fabulous rooms, amazing restaurant, 2 minutes from the beach. We did day trips to Cromer in Norfolk, saw seals on the beach, went crabbing, had a city day in Norwich and enjoyed the very bijou Southwold. Highly recommend. It was wet a lot of the time we were away but still loved it.

The Channel Islands - but don’t tell everyone, it’s fabulous

chicken12 · 25/06/2021 18:41

we just booked a couple of days in Chester on groupon as our Sept grreek hi holiday cancelled looked at a week somewhere in uk 1400 self catering no chance I'm paying that to sit in the rain

Roxy69 · 25/06/2021 18:47

You have got to be kidding. There are wonderful places in the UK, not everyone is profiteering. I would choose the UK without hesitation if I was taking a holiday this year.

TroublesomeTrucks · 25/06/2021 18:55

You think there is absolutely nowhere in the UK worth visiting? Really?

Passenger42 · 25/06/2021 18:57

If your on a budget why not go camping, I’m in west wales and there are places you can pitch a tent without too much hassle. By the time you have had a few drinks in Tenby and a cab to your Tesco 4 man tent you will sleep like a log. If it rains use your 🚗 or have a few nights in Travelodge as a fall back, anything is better than staying at home. Sunny 😎 weather is predicted..

If I was on a budget I would stay home. Camping is just not a holiday to me. I want to be as comfortable and as private as I am at home.

anything is better than staying at home

No - see comment above.

One word here: weather. Sorry but the weather is far too important to me to risk booking an overpriced uk holiday. It is just too unpredictable, I will be waiting until I can go somewhere where there is sunshine every single day- otherwise it’s just not a holiday.

Which is why I place more importance on the quality of accommodation when holidaying in the UK. There are lots of places of interest in the UK that I want to visit, so I holiday with the expectation of mixed weather, and pack accordingly.

I also love a Greek island holiday.

Give us an idea of dates & budget to narrow it down and sure your friendly mumsnet travelagents will come up with some super options!

Yorkshire Moors or Yorkshire Wolds. Had a fabulous short break in Beverley last Summer.

IRIELADY · 25/06/2021 19:50

The Yorkshire Dales, Pembrokeshire, Lake District & Cornwall are all stunning.

Me too. Good weather makes or breaks it for me.

I'm indoors now with it hammering down and thunder and lightening and if I was on holiday somewhere with this weather I would feel so miserable I would want to turn back and go home

We all have different priorities and being in the sun is my number one

Port Merrion in Wales, quirky little seaside village 🙂

RampantIvy · 25/06/2021 19:57

I'm in Essex. Storm been going on for about 30 minutes now
RampantIvy · 25/06/2021 20:04

I love a good thunderstorm. Just been cold and wet here in Yorkshire.

We had an absolute humdinger of one last month. Even the weatherman said we hadn't had anything like it for several years. Unfortunately the hailstones were so large and fast that it shredded a lot of leaves on my plants.

TheChosenTwo · 25/06/2021 20:17

We’ve had a few of U.K. holidays this past year, if you’re prepared to throw money at making it a nice time it will be brilliant regardless of the weather.
When I can get on a plane and find some heat without restrictions in place we will be back to our one U.K. holiday a year! We always do a big holiday in the U.K. with family at New Years and it’s a brilliant week but ideally I wouldn’t holiday here for the rest of the year! Maybe a few short breaks but the weather is too unpredictable and we like our luxuries too much to pack lightly so it feels like such a mission packing to cover every weather eventuality and then unpacking it all again at the other end aswell as doing it all to come home again.
Whereas a hot holiday abroad you aren’t thinking about multiple layer options, coats, wellies, other footwear, other other footwear in case a dc falls in the sea… gah!

thehairyhog · 25/06/2021 20:49

I feel like a nice hotel is needed for a proper break in the UK. Just did self catered and whilst I couldn't fault the accommodation, it didn't quite feel like a break.

If you don’t mind walking the ‘Pathfinder’ series have lovely routes which take you to the heart of the countryside. More random, might be if you have a favourite writer eg an Emily Bronte / Iain Banks explore of an area.. just mentioning to throw up alternative areas to the obvious holiday destinations. Actually I enjoyed recently a family funeral close to Hartlepool which actually was a welcome change of scenery - had fish & chips on the beach was lovely. Good luck

Greensmurf1 · 25/06/2021 21:02

There's a lot to see and do if your expectations and interests are broad enough. Take a look at English heritage and national trust websites.
There are some incredible landscapes in cornwall and you can fantasise you're in an episode of Poldark Wink
There are interesting day walks in Somerset, Yorkshire and Lancashire, north Wales, lovely gardens in Sussex, Surreyand Kent, chocolate box villages all over the place.
Interesting museums and cathedrals in all the main cities all over the UK
Spas in Bath
Fossil walks in the Isle of Wight
Is the weather going to be hot and sunny, you'll never be able to guarantee it, but if you keep an open mind, you can find some real treasures in the UK.

Camping is NOT a holiday, it is torture. I want a bed in a room with 4 solid walls, I want plumping with hot water without walking around, not even thinking about a toilet.

Camping is worse than staying at home.

This is why we only do self-catering. At least you can stay in a nice cottage if you are prepared to pay for it.

Yes, it is more than what I would pay for 2 weeks Majorca but it is still a break.

3 years ago we had the hottest Summer on record and. we went to the Forest of Dean the day the weather turned to cold and rainy. But, we still had a great time with the right clothes, had a lovely converted barn to relax in with a hot tub as well. It was a nice week relaxing, we wouldn't have been able to do at home.
