To ask if it’s worth having a holiday in the UK?

Right, I’ve coped pretty well so far, the past 16 months has been pretty difficult for many and I feel pretty bad about this but I need a holiday. A change of scenery! Some nice weather chilling food and drinks. Obviously it’s limited where you can go at the moment and we are looking at a staycation perhaps (it’s just me and DP) but everything is booked up or seriously overpriced in the UK.

Not sure if it’s worth it but I’m pretty desperate here… ( I need this for my mental health)

Can any of you recommend places to go for a couples getaway in the UK?

Self catered cottage somewhere? You can hopefully work around school times.

We are in Devon to visit family in Cornwall. The price difference was about £400!

AppleKatie · 23/06/2021 22:18

Of course it’s worth it!

Pick a less well known/populated area of coast. Pack a waterproof. Accept that it isn’t going to be wall to wall sunshine but there are still lovely hotels/gorgeous holiday let’s, wine and sea views to be had.

Ravenspeckingontheroof · 23/06/2021 22:20

Saunton Sandshotel. We go every year, it’s our main family holiday and has been for 10 years. Costs a fortune.....but it’s a total break. Can’t imagine not going.counting the days.

Whammyyammy · 23/06/2021 22:22

UK holidays are a rip off..overpriced to begin with, you'll gey fleeced while there, shit weather, dog shit on the beaches, no parking anywhere.... I refuse to support British tourism

AbsolutelyPatsy · 23/06/2021 22:24

how about cotswolds? i have never been though,
go before the school holidays if possible.

Nix32 · 23/06/2021 22:25

Absolutely love our UK holidays. The Lake District is fab for couples - huge range of hotels, from budget to luxury spas, lovely cosy pubs and restaurants, beautiful walks. A visit to the lakes always revives my soul, it's just stunning.

Then you’ve been picking your holidays wrong.

We’ve been holidaying in the UK for ages and not had a crap one yet.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/06/2021 22:26

normally yes.

this year we couldn't face it

minipie · 23/06/2021 22:26

I’d aim for somewhere that’s not super family suited (ie not the coast) if it’s just you and DP - more likely to find availability..

We used to have some lovely weekends in Herefordshire pre dc, we stayed at the Stagg Inn which was a gastropub with rooms and gorgeous countryside all around. If you search restaurants with rooms you’ll find similar options. Some lovely restaurants around Ludlow too.

Alternatively if you fancy a city you could try Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh, Canterbury, Cambridge…

TigerLils · 23/06/2021 22:28

That’s how I feel like about UK holidays in the bottom of my heart… ☹️ It we can’t afford quarantine for weeks to go abroad (I can’t work from home)
And everything is sooo expensive!
But life has been so monotone the last year and a half. Just feeling really unmotivated now. Nothing to look forward to and feeling stuck 😞

East Sussex coast line is lovely, we generally have great summers.

marmitegirl01 · 23/06/2021 22:29

Just had a weekend break in York. Loved it. Wa SO good to go somewhere new. Felt so relaxed afterwards

championthewonderhorse70 · 23/06/2021 22:29

How far would you travel. South Wales West has some stunning places.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/06/2021 22:30

I've just had a break in Shropshire. It was brilliant!

audweb · 23/06/2021 22:30

I mean yes? Maybe I’m lucky - can travel to the highlands or the coast in no time. We just spent a few days in the Perth and Kinross area and had the most amazing weather. Last year we got a beautiful place in the middle of nowhere up north and it was roasting, spent days on beaches, in the hot tub. I think you just need to pick your times and places wisely.

undermycatsthumb · 23/06/2021 22:30

Definitely worth it! I don’t relate to Whammyyammy’s experience at all. The nice weather is always going to be luck of the draw but you can definitely find somewhere with beautiful views, good food, etc. We’ve had some absolutely brilliant UK holidays but after quite a different scene to you (family, active, outdoorsy) but if you give an idea of location and what you are after, I bet there will be a MNer along with some good suggestions for you.

FWIW - just before the kids went back to school last summer, we booked a few days away in a lodge a couple of hours from home. I didn’t expect to have nearly as good a time as we had. I think a big part of it was the change of scenery; we all enjoyed that long weekend a slightly disproportionate amount. So I would definitely recommend getting away and you might well be surprised by how much joy you get out of it.

Shamoo · 23/06/2021 22:31

Loads of brilliant holidays in the U.K. But what are you looking for? Chilling, food and drinks could mean all sorts of holidays. Beach? Spa? Lake? Countryside? Hotel? Self catering? Walking? Sports?

TriangularPrism · 23/06/2021 22:33

Where do you live roughly, when do you want to go? There are so many new places to see.

You've left it late to book but it is definitely worth doing

Oh you misery guts Grin You’ve clearly only been to crap places or are a very glass half empty kind of person!

Stick a pin in a map.

There is so much beautiful scenery and coastline, so many wonderful historic towns, so many attractions to visit, you could spend a lifetime and not see all of it.

Base yourself in a town or city with good bus and rail connections to the surrounding area, and it won't matter so much if the weather isn't brilliant, because there will be indoor things to do, and you can ditch the car and not have to worry about parking.

Coldwine75 · 23/06/2021 22:39

Of course its worth it, a holiday is a holiday!

StrongerOrWeaker · 23/06/2021 22:39

I like weekends away in the UK but no more than that.

Coldwine75 · 23/06/2021 22:40

Ideas:

City breaks
weekend in London, posh hotel
costal breaks
forest breaks

the list is endless

DameAlyson · 23/06/2021 22:43

Of course its worth it, a holiday is a holiday!

I've booked a few nights in a budget hotel in a seaside town only just over an hour away. I am looking forward to it so much - change of scene, leisurely walks, seafront cafes, sea air.

Northernsoullover · 23/06/2021 22:43

I'd be inclined to try and find something unusual. Shepherds hut or deluxe pod. Take books and board games in case of bad weather. I don't think I could do more than 3 nights anywhere though. I'm hoping to find somewhere for 2 x 3 nights over the summer.
