To ask if it’s worth having a holiday in the UK?

Right, I’ve coped pretty well so far, the past 16 months has been pretty difficult for many and I feel pretty bad about this but I need a holiday. A change of scenery! Some nice weather chilling food and drinks. Obviously it’s limited where you can go at the moment and we are looking at a staycation perhaps (it’s just me and DP) but everything is booked up or seriously overpriced in the UK.

Not sure if it’s worth it but I’m pretty desperate here… ( I need this for my mental health)

Can any of you recommend places to go for a couples getaway in the UK?

We went to North wales a couple of years ago - lovely scenery, stunning unspoilt beaches, walks, lakes, it was lovely.

Spermysextowel · 23/06/2021 23:31

It depends how much it’s worth to you. MsTswift would prefer Italy, but is going to Northumberland so she (or her family) prefer a UK break to none at all. I’d go anywhere that meant that I didn’t have to cook for a few days.

TriangularPrism · 23/06/2021 23:33

"I’ve been looking for 4/5* and there’s literally nothing left until October. Unless you want London."

What rubbish, of course there is. A quick browse on hotels . Com threw up loads in august for me

Watchingyou2sleezes · 23/06/2021 23:42

Israel is on the green list and opening up to Brits next week, We went to Iceland last week (flights were much cheaper than the last time we went) though it's relatively expensive once you're there.
We've just took a punt on Malta being on the green list after next week and booked a week- but we won't bother going if it stays on amber.

There's definite profiteering in the UK holiday market, and yes lot's have gone without income and need to make it back but some are taking liberties with their pricing.

Consider that most Europeans are travelling freely, a German newspaper even ran a 'humourous' piece last week about how the Germans had won the 'sunbed wars' this year, take a punt or book for August and get some sun. If restrictions are still in place just take the loss on chin and don't bother going if it's too much of a pain.

Tuberoses · 23/06/2021 23:51

In a normal year I’d say yes, UK holidays are lovely. But this year everywhere is overpriced and packed with people who’d normally go abroad. So I wouldn’t bother.

pabloescobarselasticband · 23/06/2021 23:56

Uk holidays are crap to be honest. Overpriced, shitty ripoff!

RoseMartha · 23/06/2021 23:56

Normally yes, i have been looking for months for something that is not overpriced.

Next month will be 2 years since we went anywhere. We only stay in uk. 3-7 nights somewhere.

You might find something on here for two. Places seem great and quirky but a lot are for two which doesnt suit me but might suit you.

I'm one of "those" who normally get 2 or 3 plane flight away holidays a year. 2020 we managed one. And yes I hear the violins.

Easter this year we went to Dorset. Caravan. Camp site. And guess what? One of if not the best simply because: we all appreciated it so much more. Apart from one petty squabble we were happier than average

Corny as it sounds it's what you make of it. Turkey or Tunbridge.

SweatyBetty20 · 24/06/2021 00:06

I normally go further afield - either Nepal for mountaineering, or the continent for cycling holidays where it doesn’t rain all day but I do go to the Lakes for walking weekends regularly. Made the decision not to chance it abroad this year and booked a week in Northumberland in a small house at Beadnell. Blew me away! Gorgeous beaches, great for walking and cycling, lovely pubs and great food. Ate out a couple of times and stayed in and cooked - bought lobster in seahouses for 18 each and grilled at the house - friend bought one in Aldeburgh the same week and it was £35! I’ll definitely be back.

FaceyRomford · 24/06/2021 00:06

UK holidays are a rip off..overpriced to begin with, you'll gey fleeced while there, shit weather, dog shit on the beaches, no parking anywhere.... I refuse to support British tourism
We only holiday abroad (usually Germany or Austria) once every ten years or so. Always had a fabulous time in the UK. You are clearly going to the wrong places.
ThinWomansBrain · 24/06/2021 00:21

I usually have breaks in the UK - I went to Sussex in May.
While there is pressure on availability of large cottages, I didn't have that issue finding a small one.

This.
Womencanlift · 24/06/2021 00:56

If posters think it’s expensive then they obviously are not looking for deals or are going at the wrong time

I spent last week exploring the Highlands. Didn’t pay more than £30 per night for the hotel and the bed was comfier than my own!

Did a mix of road trip, walking, water sports as well just relaxing and eating really well. Even came home with unexpected sun burn!

Yes it will be more expensive as of next week as schools break up this week but I have booked again for the last week of the holidays in August and didn’t pay that much more than last week

cocoloco987 · 24/06/2021 07:01

How about a city break. Countryside holidays are sold out and over priced but city hotels are complaining they are struggling to attract visitors. Somewhere like Edinburgh where there is still lots of open space?

newnortherner111 · 24/06/2021 07:04

Is it worth thinking about having a holiday in September when prices are lower? I'm in the same situation as you and have a week booked in September, choice was good, prices reasonable.

EdithWeston · 24/06/2021 07:07

We had a good break in Dumfries and Galloway - few years ago, inexpensive and uncrowded then, doubt it'll be unpleasantly full even now.

We usually holiday in Britain.

OM82 · 24/06/2021 07:13

I love to travel but try not to fly (in normal times!) so often holiday on the UK. I love it, even going an hour away can make a change. It's definitely a break from home and routine which is the main thing. Where to go depends totally on your preferences and how long you want to travel for.

Coastal Northumberland (around Alnmouth) area is one of my favourite spots though. You've got lots of lovely pubs and cafes, coastal walks and great beaches, and castles to visit. But that might be your idea of hell of your want a city trip!

SmokeyDevil · 24/06/2021 07:14

Rather than waste time reading a thread for the next few days hoping someone suggests an exact cottage or location for you, why don't you just go onto booking.com, trivago etc and start looking? You can select an area at random or that is as far as you'll travel, then sort the results by price. It's going to be much quicker for you than this, because everyone will just suggest everywhere within a few pages, and you'll even have some options that are more expensive than you'd like (you got that within the first few posts). So it's not going to be helpful. Best thing you can do is spend some time on Google.

rookiemere · 24/06/2021 07:14

It depends what yo are looking for. The popular tourist destinations and cottages are all booked up, but there is still plenty of availability if you're prepared to look around.

We had a lovely weekend in Penrith, on the outskirts of the Lake District but only 10 minutes drive to the more popular and scenic Pooley Bridge. We stayed in a nice hotel and enjoyed a bit of shopping and wandering round the town - I'd checked on trip advisor so we ate dinner in fabulous restaurants.

Ultimately it's your choice. After almost a year of doing very little at all, any change of scene is wonderful for me.

You need to pick better places to go on holiday!

We try to have a least one UK holiday a year - we live in a beautiful country with such varied scenery and a huge amount of history.

I'm also very keen to supply the British tourism industry.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 24/06/2021 07:19

I'm doing a house swap with a friend who lives in a different area. Do you have any friends or relatives who'd also like a change of scene? Keeps the cost down hugely, so you have more budget for days out/activities/nicer meals. It doesn't matter where they live, everywhere in the UK has Interesting stuff to do and places to go.

sandgrown · 24/06/2021 07:20

I live in a UK seaside resort and until yesterday we had not had rain for weeks . The beaches have been packed . In fact it looked just like Benidorm! I like to go abroad but I also like to explore all areas of the UK . There are just as many beautiful and cultural places as in countries abroad.

Ylvamoon · 24/06/2021 07:21

I have been a couple of times. I always find UK holidays overpriced and overcrowded. Especially during the school holidays.
I rather wait and just enjoy my lovely home!

Skysblue · 24/06/2021 07:22

What do you enjoy doing OP? Could do ansctivity holiday - rock climbing canoeing etc. Could do a siteseeing holiday near ancient sites. Could stay near a zoo that does keeper for a day experiences. Could do London museums and boat trip and London Eye etc. Could climb mountains in Scotland / Wales. The only bit that’s crap in UK is the sea is cold, lots of other stuff to do though.

We’re basing ourselves on South coast, doing the safari parks, bits of the beach, some national trust history stuff and some adventure activities.

I've never had an issue with these things on a UK holiday. Most beaches don't even allow dogs in the Summer so I think maybe you're exaggerating...
