About coughing children in shops…

Just seen a mum pop in to a shop near me for no essentials, just sweets, with a child with a bad cough. I’ve seen this a few times recently. I think it’s irresponsible at the moment. I also feel it’s a bit mean to drag a sick child out and about at the best of times. I didn’t say anything as I wouldn’t upset a child, but am I wrong to quietly judge?

One of my kids has a cough after a chest infection. They’re covid tested multiple times a week and going on least experiences they’ll probably cough for 6/8 weeks, am I just supposed to keep them home the entire time?

If the mother is announcing that she’s not had the kid tested and encouraging them to cough over people then judge. Otherwise don’t.

Charliebradbury · 23/06/2021 16:10

My dd had a cough for 6 weeks straight one winter, I had no choice but to take her places. My ds suffers with mucus which cause him to cough. Both are not particularly sick at these times just had a cough. Coughs can last for weeks especially in young children.

Smartiepants79 · 23/06/2021 16:12

But kids catch germs all the time! Are you seriously suggesting they shouldn’t be allowed out any time they’ve got a minor illness like a cold? Some kids would never leave the house.

Crazycakelady17 · 23/06/2021 16:12

My DD has asthma and one of the main symptoms is a cough what should I do keep her home for weeks on end?

WonderfulSave · 23/06/2021 16:12

Yes, you are wrong. Maybe I should leave my 4 year old home alone to cough. She was tested. Awful awful experience.

DH is the same when he has a cold. Coughs a lot.

Magicstars · 23/06/2021 16:14

My asthmatic child can cough lots in public. It’s awful as I know ppl will be judging us, but we do have to go out sometimes too!

Frogsonglue · 23/06/2021 16:14

My kids are capable of coughing for weeks after a cold.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 23/06/2021 16:14

Ds2 has had negative covid test so why shouldn't he come out?

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 23/06/2021 16:14

Meant to say and a cough.

My DS coughs a lot, the pollen count is high at the moment, it could have been hayfever, don't judge unless you have all the facts.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/06/2021 16:17

Yabu. My DS has a cough for half the year.
As long as the DC uses a tissue or elbow sleeve it is fine.
BTW I think very few are only shopping for essentials.

Whatabouttery · 23/06/2021 16:17

Oh no! Hope you showered in disinfectant when you got home, how awful!!!

So true
Camomila · 23/06/2021 16:19

DS1 coughed pretty much constantly from March to July last year (bad hayfever year!) it was a nightmare going anywhere with him.

SpringRainbow · 23/06/2021 16:21

My son has been known to cough for weeks/ months.

My husband is asthmatic and also suffers from hay fever. Both has been really problematic for him. Both can cause him to cough.

Neither can be expected to stay indoors until they are cough free as who knows when that will be.

You have no idea why that child is coughing.

JamieLeeBee · 23/06/2021 16:22

Single mum here, maybe you only saw her buying sweets which you feel are non essential. Firstly, lots of things have reopened so she is entitled to go and buy sweets. Secondly, you know nothing of the circumstances. Could have been bad news in the family and she was taking the child for sweets to distract for all you know? Or stopped in that shop before going to do her groceries. Did you follow her to check?

I have a daughter who has a cough, we tested negative, will I just stay at home with her and starve to suit people like you judging us? I'm a lone parent with very little support, some of us have literally no choice but to bring our children.

Nicknacky · 23/06/2021 16:24

Would it have been better if she was buying milk or toilet roll?

Hufflepuffsunite · 23/06/2021 16:24

Everyone in my house is coughing! It's hayfever season. It feels like we live at the sodding test centre we've had to get that many tests, and dh and I do LFT twice a week. If I want to take my coughing children to the shop I will.
