About coughing children in shops…

Just seen a mum pop in to a shop near me for no essentials, just sweets, with a child with a bad cough. I’ve seen this a few times recently. I think it’s irresponsible at the moment. I also feel it’s a bit mean to drag a sick child out and about at the best of times. I didn’t say anything as I wouldn’t upset a child, but am I wrong to quietly judge?

I do wonder if people are getting a bit slack

🤣

Zari29 · 23/06/2021 16:49

if the mum had no one to look after her child where does she leave him?????

wildeverose · 23/06/2021 16:50

Get. A. Grip.

Lemonzandlimes · 23/06/2021 16:50

Hi OP,

are you generally feeling nervous still about everything? Like another PP said, restrictions will be easing next month so it's best to come to terms with this sort of thing now. It's not pleasant but children do not always think to cover their mouths when coughing, there is nothing stopping you from steering clear if you hear/see it though.

FawkesThePhoenix · 23/06/2021 16:51

My son has just got over a 4 week long cough. He was tested and was negative so once he was feeling better guess what...we actually left the house! We are not in a lockdown and people are allowed to purchase what ever they wish to and should be able to do so without people judging whether it is essential or not!

The world will collapse if everyone has to stay home with every stifle even whither s negative covid test. Utter nonsense.

On the other hand, I judged yesterday when parked up at mcdonslds waiting for my food, I overheard the couple using the picnic table right next to where I'd been asked to park debating whether to get a covid test for the female of the couple as she couldnt breathe and couldnt stop coughing Hmm (I promptly closed my car window upon hearing this)

FawkesThePhoenix · 23/06/2021 16:51

**sniffle even with a negative covid test

flossletsfloss · 23/06/2021 16:52

Get a grip OP and a life. Sorry but I'm just sick of it. People cough. All...the...time! It doesn't mean they have covid.

CrowBones · 23/06/2021 16:52

My child is type 1 diabetic, sweets are essential to treat low blood sugar.

There, now you have literally nothing left to complain about.

Lemonzandlimes · 23/06/2021 16:52

I know you're getting some (okay most of them so far) sarcastic comments but I think this does highlight how some people are going to struggle with returning to normal whereas others have long since accepted the risk.

We have to live alongside it i'm afraid. Self isolation for a cough is just not sustainable in the long term.

DipSwimSwoosh · 23/06/2021 16:53

We are allowed out for sweets now. And we are allowed to cough. Have you heard of the Covid tests? Once negative there is no reason to isolate. Let the kids cough.

MargosKaftan · 23/06/2021 16:55

Another whos child had the bug that isn't covid doing the rounds which leaves a nasty cough for about a week afterwards.

Sorry but you need to accept that viruses and bugs are a normal part of life and people will get them. If they're school aged, they will have had to have a negative covid test to be allowed in the building with a cough, so hopefully that will put your mind at rest a bit.

Rosebel · 23/06/2021 16:56

My whole family has had a cough the last two weeks and we've all had negative Covid tests. No way I'm keeping them coped up inside (especially as two of them have had to isolate recently due to being close contacts of positive tests).
Not every cough is Covid you know. I've had lots of glares at work too but two negative tests is good enough for me.

Picklesbaby · 23/06/2021 16:57

Dd has suspected asthma and ds is just getting over croup. Sweets sound like a fabulous idea !

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 23/06/2021 16:57

Somebody’s probably already said this. cancel the cheque OP YABU, but parents please, please teach your children to cover their mouths when they cough. And if they’re coughing or sneezing repeatedly please at least mention it to them, or give them a tissue rather than ignore/look on oblivious.

Yes, I work in retail 👍

3cats2kids · 23/06/2021 16:58

@LadyOfLittleLeisure I did refrain from dirty looks or any overt judging. People who do that are just dicks!
I did cover myself in hand gel once I got back in the car. Then had a shower and put my clothes on a hot wash. COVID has probably sent my pre-existing germ phobia a bit silly!
Although another part of me is worried sick about this new variant!

Ds1 has SEN and uses coughing as a form of communication...it's been fun the past year when out. At least people social distance from us in shops Grin

rainbowunicorn · 23/06/2021 17:01

Bloody Hell! Are we still whining about people going to shops to buy non essantials?
You are being bloody ridiculous. Children have coughs for all kinds of reasons as do grown ups. If you are that uncomfortable with being around people maybe you should stay at home.

funinthesun19 · 23/06/2021 17:03

I’ve recently had covid and I’m now testing negative. I still have a lingering cough and still feel quite wiped out.

Not everyone with a cough is infectious. I’m not staying at home when I’m not a risk to anyone. If I want nip to the shop for a chocolate bar to perk myself up I’ll go and get one.

The same could apply to the mum and child you saw.

Seasidemumma77 · 23/06/2021 17:03

One of my dc has a persistent cough during due to hay-fever, hadn't realised I was supposed to keep him locked away and out of sight!

cocoloco987 · 23/06/2021 17:03

Oh we're here again! Non essential shopping, people judged on their bodily functions. There are many reasons the dc could be coughing and mum probably knows which one of those reasons it is YABU

CoopsMalloops · 23/06/2021 17:05

@GreenWheat

Oh do jog on.
That’s the polite way of saying it…!!
CharlieChickenson · 23/06/2021 17:06

I'm thinking of designing t-shirts for children to paraphrase Sheldon Cooper

'It's not covid, my mother had me tested'

Might leave the Bazinga! off the back though....

toocold54 · 23/06/2021 17:08

I’m an adult and I’ve got an awful cough and bad hay fever so I look terrible but I’m not going to stop going to the shop just because someone like you has anxiety. Do you know how many kids are asymptomatic? Why not just get your shopping delivered if you have a phobia of germs? I’m sure if the mum had an option to keep him home she would have cough or no cough.

cocoloco987 · 23/06/2021 17:10

I did cover myself in hand gel once I got back in the car. Then had a shower and put my clothes on a hot wash. COVID has probably sent my pre-existing germ phobia a bit silly

It's been quite some time now since we learned covid is airborne not touch transmitted. I'm not sure how you think showering will help

wingingit987 · 23/06/2021 17:10

My toddler thinks it's funny to cough in public! Drives me insane.
