About coughing children in shops…

Just seen a mum pop in to a shop near me for no essentials, just sweets, with a child with a bad cough. I’ve seen this a few times recently. I think it’s irresponsible at the moment. I also feel it’s a bit mean to drag a sick child out and about at the best of times. I didn’t say anything as I wouldn’t upset a child, but am I wrong to quietly judge?

THis is why I joked to DS we needed a I have tested negative badge for him!

He came down with a cough the same day his sister started self isolating due to close contact so he stayed in with her for the required amount of time plus tested negative (PCR tested as we all were).

We then went ot Harry Potter Studio tour (half term) and he coughed and I am sure people judged but he had a negative PCR test plus 10 day staying at home

Thoughtcontagion · 23/06/2021 16:25

Maybe they were coming back the doctor and child had been brave so mum treated child to sweets.

I thought we were allowed more than a loaf and a pint of milk for 6 weeks now? Non essential shopping is back on isn’t it?

MeadowHay · 23/06/2021 16:26

My toddler is suspected asthmatic and basically permanently has a cough. Should we never leave the house then? Confused

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 23/06/2021 16:26

I have asthma and am always coughing, how do you know it's not something like that?

MadeOfStarStuff · 23/06/2021 16:26

YABU

There are loads of reasons for people to be coughing that aren’t covid. Asthma, hay fever, croup, chest infection etc

Just assume that the majority of people aren’t stupid or selfish and that they would test a child with a new cough and not take them to the shop unless it was negative.

I have a permanent cough due to asthma, do you expect me to not have left the house since last February? If so maybe you’re the one who shouldn’t go out in public.

JaffaRaf · 23/06/2021 16:27

My daughter was 3 months premature and always coughs, always has done, more so if it’s damp or freezing or high pollen count. She can’t live her life never leaving the house because her lungs were affected by prematurity though. I coughed all the time as a kid as I had asthma. It’s pretty normal in kids! Maybe work on being less judgmental to strangers OP.

We are allowed to buy anything we want

3cats2kids · 23/06/2021 16:30

I thought I was probably unreasonable and it could be anything causing it.

I do wonder if people are getting a bit slack, though, as I keep seeing this, alongside less and less people wearing masks.

My DD had hayfever, it shows as a cough, so I would have to keep her home from April through until October time ... I wouldn't judge.

A bit slack? We're meant to be back to normal in a few weeks. Better start getting used to it 🙄
TurdCrapley · 23/06/2021 16:34

My 2 year old coughs on purpose cause it makes him laugh😂oops!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/06/2021 16:36

what Covid Police rank are you?

SpnBaby1967 · 23/06/2021 16:37

Going in to shops with a child and buying sweets is a bit slack? I go into shops all the time coughing, hayfever is evil at the moment and sometimes I even buy non essentials! Does that make me slack?

Ffs, what a bunch of pansies this country is becoming. Its covid, not the bloody black death!

MrsMonkeyBear · 23/06/2021 16:37

I've been covid testing my 3 year old weekly for about 6 weeks due to a cough that won't go away.

She's been to the doctors, her chest is clear, she's just super snotty due to hayfever. There's not a lot we can do about it.

Probably buying sweets to cheer the poor child up because they have a coughGrin

Not every cough is Covid. Mine has bad hayfever and asthma so a cough is present most of the time especially at this time of year.

What’s the saying now:

People use to cough to hide a fart
Now people fart to hide a coughGrin

ChaosMoon · 23/06/2021 16:42

My 2yr old hasn't gone a week without coughing in her entire life. Hayfever is making it much worse at the moment. I try to make her cover her mouth, but then she "practices" by coughing repeatedly. I've had her tested so many times and it's brutal when they're that young. But I won't lock her up to suit busy bodies.

idontlikealdi · 23/06/2021 16:42

Oh fuck off. I've had a cough for the last 6 months. THERE ARE OTHER REASONS FOR COUGHS.

Peace43 · 23/06/2021 16:44

My kid has a hay fever induced dry cough. She’s had a Covid test. She gets this every year. It could go in for another few months. I’m not making her stay in until the winter!

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 23/06/2021 16:45

A cough can actually just be a cough. She might have already got the child tested... you don’t know do you?

Toottooot · 23/06/2021 16:45

Fuck off. Maybe the ‘essential’ item she needed wasn’t available? I thought those restrictions had also been lifted? Also, you do realise that people have coughed long before covid was a thing. A cough isn’t exclusive to covid.

You have to see how many halls soothers are their epaulettes, if they have 2 they can identify covid coughs at 2ms even with the rustle of sweetie bags. Makes them an inspector

This is an excellent description!
notasillysausage · 23/06/2021 16:47

With every cold my preschool child gets, she develops a lingering cough for about 3 weeks after. She has had a COVID test each time at great discomfort (all negative). Children get on average 8 colds a year, so say her cold lasts a week and the cough lasts a further 3 weeks, by your reckoning my daughter should be kept out of public for 32 weeks of the year. All to protect the paranoid, over sensitive COVID worriers. Perhaps you should stay indoors if you are that concerned.

LadyOfLittleLeisure · 23/06/2021 16:48

My eldest has a cough stim/tic it's awful in Covid times as we get horrendous looks but it's not like I can just keep him at home all day every day.
