to not get an induction hob?

Heathofhares · 22/06/2021 19:32

I need to get a new hob. I want gas. Everyone is telling me I need induction, mostly because "it's easy to clean". I have tried cooking on induction a few times on a few different cookers and have hated it every time. I am a keen (and to be truthful - a very good cook). My cooking is pretty instinctive - and I certainly don't want to program a cooker to decide what temperature to cook a steak at! I want a hob for cooking - not for cleaning so...please tell me why IABU...

YANBU het gas. Induction had been a PITA every time I’ve used it

WhatIsThisPlease · 22/06/2021 19:36

I had to use an induction hob in a holiday house I stayed in for a week.
Total nightmare. Put me off forever! I much prefer gas. YANBU

Coulddowithanap · 22/06/2021 19:36

I'd love a gas hob. I much prefer them to cook on.

Caspianberg · 22/06/2021 19:37

You don’t have to program an induction to cook food. You just turn the heat up and down like you would on gas.

Induction is nothing like the old electric hobs

TheDuckSaysMoo · 22/06/2021 19:39

Induction every time. So controllable, fast, clean, sleek

Truthlikeness · 22/06/2021 19:39

My parents love their induction hob, but I like the flexibility of a naked flame. How will you chargrill aubergines?!

Yesmate · 22/06/2021 19:40

I got rid of mine about two weeks after moving in to my new house. Absolute PITA

BestIsWest · 22/06/2021 19:40

YANBU I hate my induction hob and want to go back to gas. It Is much cleaner though. No programming with mine either.

Mrsjayy · 22/06/2021 19:41

I have an induction its an arseache to clean get gas. I wish I had when dh told me it be better Blush

Killahangilion · 22/06/2021 19:41

I hate gas, and much prefer Induction but then I’m not a Luddite. Grin

TheDuckSaysMoo · 22/06/2021 19:42

While I can programme my induction I don't have to - although I find it incredible useful for things I can put on and leave - e.g. curries and soups.

MySocalledLoaf · 22/06/2021 19:42

I got induction because everyone told me to and I hated it. Was so relieved to move and get back to gas.

MsLumley · 22/06/2021 19:43

We’re keen cooks too and got an induction hob a couple of years ago. I bloody hate it. I can’t even poach a bloody egg properly with it. I’ve got a bit more used to it recently but I wouldn’t get one again. Don’t do it.

With a kitchen blow torch? I use it to light my Ooni pizza oven too.

We love induction, but if you want gas get gas. It is you who has to clean it. I have no idea why you think you need to program an induction hob to cook on it though, it is just numbers 1-15 on mine.

ClarisseMcClellan · 22/06/2021 19:45

Why does it matter if other people think one type of hob is easy to clean? Genuine question, it's your hob in your house that you will be cleaning so why wouldn't you buy the one you want Confused

grizzlygrump · 22/06/2021 19:46

I think it's very difficult to justify buying a gas hob from an environmental POV. Induction is annoying as hell, at first, I agree, but it is so much more energy efficient, and it is one of the few changes we can make to not piss over the world for our children.

dolphinsanddoughnuts · 22/06/2021 19:51

Like you, good cook, loved gas.... just had an induction and I would never look back. You get used to the heat settings in a couple of days and I will never miss cleaning a gas hob again. The flexibility on using two zones at once for large pans is great. I actually think it's faster for boiling pan of water etc.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 22/06/2021 19:55

We loved ours, but we've moved to a house with gas hobs and we're living with those for the moment. Gas might be our second choice, but it's still pretty good.

I would recommend you buy what suits you, not what suits other people.

lightlypoached · 22/06/2021 19:58

I think that the problem is there are induction hobs and induction hobs .

I've used a Crap one that didn't respond well and was either too low or boiling the shit out of everything, and the lovely NEFF one we have. It's incredibly sensitive (perfect poached eggs), can chargrill on a cast iron skillet, has a fry option that makes fried eggs all crispy but soft, and the ability to put roasting plans on. Ours has a built in extractor too so no need for a hood. Bloody love it. Gas, pah!

thecapitalsunited · 22/06/2021 19:58

I really like my induction hob. It’s very controllable and boils water very quickly. The only thing I find a pain is stir fry because as soon as you lift the pan it stops heating.

If you don’t want induction don’t get it though.

Hankunamatata · 22/06/2021 19:59

Inductions fine. Prefer gas though for easy temp control

Okbye · 22/06/2021 20:01

YANBU, get gas! My mum got an induction this year and she HATES it 😄

I do too, it’s such a fucking faff having to program it to cook something. Much prefer gas - and when my gas hob needs replacing, I’ll replace it with another gas hob 😄

whiteroseredrose · 22/06/2021 20:02

I don't like my induction hob. Prone to switching itself off if steam trickles down, squawks if something metal rests on it..... I miss my old spiral electric hob!!

Ooohhh get you 😀. Had one with that silly central extraction, hated the f*er and nearly 3k down the drain.

A proper hood and a more standard one replaced it shortly afterwards.

I really wanted to love my induction hob and it wasn't cheap, but I think you're right. Mine is very straightforward but it seems to have a mind of its own at times. It has an auto cut off feature when it gets wet, which does make it safer, but is a PITA. It's like a smoke alarm going off every time you burn the toast, it is only ever is an annoyance.
