to not get an induction hob?

Heathofhares · 22/06/2021 19:32

I need to get a new hob. I want gas. Everyone is telling me I need induction, mostly because "it's easy to clean". I have tried cooking on induction a few times on a few different cookers and have hated it every time. I am a keen (and to be truthful - a very good cook). My cooking is pretty instinctive - and I certainly don't want to program a cooker to decide what temperature to cook a steak at! I want a hob for cooking - not for cleaning so...please tell me why IABU...

Definitely gas all the way. YANBU.

But ... 'how will you chargrill aubergines?'

God, I love Mumsnet sometimes. Best response yet.

@thecapitalsunited

I really like my induction hob. It’s very controllable and boils water very quickly. The only thing I find a pain is stir fry because as soon as you lift the pan it stops heating.

If you don’t want induction don’t get it though.

Ooh that’s an interesting point! I nearly got an induction but they were so expensive I decided to stick to gas.

My thinking was that professional kitchens all use gas, so it must be the best!!

I make a lot of caramel for my baking business and I hadn’t thought that every time I lift the pan to swirl it around the induction would have turned off - what a nightmare when trying to get it up to temperature!!

Cleaning the gas hob is a bit of a pain (especially when covered in molten sugar work!) but I’ll take that for the ease and convenience of cooking on it.

@Okbye

YANBU, get gas! My mum got an induction this year and she HATES it 😄

I do too, it’s such a fucking faff having to program it to cook something. Much prefer gas - and when my gas hob needs replacing, I’ll replace it with another gas hob 😄

I really don’t understand what everyone is on about. Our induction has four rings each of which goes from number 1 to number 9, just like turning gas up and down and almost as quick (unlike a traditional electric hob). What is all this “programming” business?
Bingomangoes · 22/06/2021 20:14

We have always used gas and went to the effort/expense of having gas pipes brought to the house in 2 previous properties because we didn't want to cook on an elec hob. Renovated current house and put in an induction hob 4 months ago.... its amazing! Id say its actually more controllable than gas, 9 heating settings + boost for boiling water quickly. No programmes (not sure what that's all about) just very controllable heat, wouldnt go back.

lightlypoached · 22/06/2021 20:16

@Watchingyou2sleezes I know right Grin. It's a bit fancy.

Tangledtresses · 22/06/2021 20:17

Can't say I've ever seen a professional chef with an induction hob.... I love gas hobs but I love to cook too...

Ultimately it's up to you? If you want has and you do most of the cooking get gas, if your husband does most of the cooking and he wants induction Get induction 🤷🏼‍♀️

321zyx · 22/06/2021 20:19

Gas all the way.....how many professional kitchens have you seen/know who use induction = zero!

chipshopElvis · 22/06/2021 20:20

I was convinced I only wanted gas but love my induction it's very flexible, looks better and is easy to clean also safe for the kids to use.

thecapitalsunited · 22/06/2021 20:20

@TheShoeLady Lifting a pan doesn’t turn off the hob per se but it works with magnets so heat is only generated in pan while it’s in contact with the hob. A bit like pulling the pan too far away from the flames on a gas hob I suppose.

@museumum I don’t get the programming thing either. Mine has ultra low settings for keeping things warm or slow simmering then settings one to nine and a rapid heat function. I just turn the knob up to increase heat and down to turn it down just like a gas hob.

321zyx · 22/06/2021 20:22

I could cope with induction if they had a traditional knob that you turn up and down - the ones I've used (a fair few) have irritating flat 'buttons' that bleep as you press them up and down......just saying....

TheKeatingFive · 22/06/2021 20:23

I’m a decent cook. I adore my induction hob. The range of temperatures you can use is amazing. It IS a dream to clean

Gas is probably more immediately/intuitively responsive. But that wouldn’t counter the down sides for me.

TakeMe2Insanity · 22/06/2021 20:24

The clue is in the comment. They love induction as easy to clean and not because they are great to cook with! We have induction in holiday homes and I hate them. Give me gas everytime.

Ohpulltheotherone · 22/06/2021 20:26

If you get a decent induction it will be fine, a cheaper or older model can be a right pain.

Lots of professional kitchens are turning to induction as well as gas.

I love mine but I spent a fair bit on it.

I don’t need to flame grill aubergines Grin

But at the end of the day, get what you want. What is more comfortable and enjoyable for you!

Bichette · 22/06/2021 20:30

I've had both and definitely prefer gas.
My DH is a professional chef, he also prefers gas.

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2021 20:30

I don't understand "the program to cook a steak" - you just turn the heat up or down 1-9 exactly as you do with gas.

Took me a little while to adjust but I love mine now and wouldn't go back (and I'm not a bad cook).

squee123 · 22/06/2021 20:30

Good good, liked gas, love induction. Rally don't get the comments about programming it though. Mine you just turn the heat up and down like you would on a gas hob and it is super responsive.

Perhaps people hating it have rubbish induction?

awonderfuladventure · 22/06/2021 20:31

I've had an induction hob for about a month, always had gas previously and I am completely converted. It's controllable and so easy to clean!

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2021 20:31

I think often the problem with induction is the pans. I was given a lovely set.

Yellow85 · 22/06/2021 20:32

Hate my induction hon. Constantly cleaning it. It’s 3 years old and it’s scratched to hell too for the pots. I’m getting gas next

KingdomScrolls · 22/06/2021 20:32

My best friend's husband is a chef when they refitted the kitchen she wanted induction , he said if she got an induction he'd get a calor gas camping stove and use that (and also pointed out he does pretty much all of the cooking)

Slippy78 · 22/06/2021 20:32

I used to insist on gas only but ever I since a got a decent induction hob I've been converted. So much more control and easier to clean.

Loads of professional kitchens have switched to induction.

starfishy · 22/06/2021 20:36

As pp's have said, it depends on the induction hob. I am a also keen cook and I used to cook for work and prefer induction.
Cheap induction hobs are not good, but when we did our own kitchen we put in an amazing induction and a single gas ring and we ended up never using the gas.
Have since moved and now have gas again. It doesn't perform any better, takes longer to cook and has more 'hot spots' on pans and yes is a pain to clean.
Will take you a couple of days to get used to the settings though.

BeeyatchPlease · 22/06/2021 20:38

My mum spent a fortune on her induction job and really loves it, she's a great cook. I am also a very good cook and pottering in the kitchen is definitely my thing but there is no way in hell I'd ever switch to induction, gas all the way. I find there is just not the same level of control and it turns off if any water gets on it or if you lift the pan.

MaskingForIt · 22/06/2021 20:40

YABU induction is like gas, but better. Much more controllable.

I do miss the flow and heat of the naked flame though.

Mrsjayy · 22/06/2021 20:42

Mine isn't fancy with programmes I don't mind cooking with it but I m a messy cook and the "rings" get manky .
