Blue hair

I know a lot of people mid forties dyeing their hair blue or pink, I don’t get it. Why? It looks awful growing out and their natural colour is better.

@Myleftfoot39

I see it as very unprofessional, I wouldn’t trust someone’s judgement if they had very brightly coloured hair. I would see at as attention seeking/instability
I'll let my blue haired A&E consultant friend know, incase you need life saving care in the future!

I might be more likely to use a good solicitor with coloured hair if it meant the other side would automatically underestimate their brilliance.

Absolutely & we know a very experienced & brilliant solicitor who does exactly this & uses it to their advantage time & time again

BiBabbles · 21/06/2021 11:49

I can maybe see it as unprofessional if it isn't done or maintained well, I've seen some messy dye jobs, but really, I've not noticed any professional differences with bright hair colouring vs any other way of having one's hair.

I wouldn't do it after too many years as a child having very bright bleached blonde hair - I don't think my poor battered scalp can deal with much more of that and I don't like how I look with bright hair - but I know plenty of people across ages who've brightly dyed their hair since the '80s, some who are quite mild-mannered.

Whether their natural colour is 'better' is subjective and not always part of the equation. I know people who think my charcoal brown almost-black hair would look better with brighter colours in it - that's part of why I was bleached as a kid and after I finally got my own hair colour back had plenty of people go on about how much better it would look with highlights -- I don't care and neither do I think those who dye their hair blue or purple care about that. That someone else may think my hair is ugly doesn't really bother me anymore.

Why? Because I like it.
Obviously I don't think my natural colour is "better" or I wouldn't dye it.

Why, on earth, would you care?

HouseOfGoldandBones · 21/06/2021 12:16

@JadedStrumpet

I'm 42 and have wanted to dye my hair pink fkt twenty years. The only reason I haven't is that my very fine flyaway hair would probably die during the process.

@JadedStrumpet Fashion hair colours won't damage your hair.

They're direct dyes, so essentially they're just conditioner with some colouring in them.

It's the bleach which might damage.

invisiblegirllj · 21/06/2021 12:19

@Bluesheep8

I dyed my hair every possible colour aged 14/15 but I was a young teenager experimenting with my style after all, I wouldn’t do this now at 28 and definitely wouldn’t at 48.

is experimenting with your style not allowed when you're older? Confused

It's hardly experimenting when you've done it all before

Even our vicar has rainbow coloured hair. She looks great.

So in my very late 40's I've 'done it all before'? Confused

Thats how i see this post.
WhateverHappenedToMe · 21/06/2021 12:52

My hair is greying. It's sort of expected that I will hide the grey - and as it's the same amount of work to dye it brown or purple, surely that's my choice? I'm not public-facing at work, even in normal times.

RickiTarr · 21/06/2021 12:55

Have the very let’s say “traditional” posters in the thread not heard of blue rinses (which actually came in all kinds of alarming floral shades)?

HarrietHairbrush · 21/06/2021 12:55

Or maybe like Me, OP they have been “the good girl” striving to meet these ideals all their life, looking “professional”
And “expensive” and trying to portray the right level of competence without being attention seeking.
having just the right hair, and natural look but high maintenance highlights and makeup and then got to 40 and looked back and wished they had lived a bit more when they were young. Realised they aren’t getting any younger so why not chuck some pink dye on your hair. Which hurts nobody. But maybe gives that person a feeling of empowerment and frankly joy rather than “I’m mad me” “look at me look at me”

RickiTarr · 21/06/2021 12:59

I can’t think of anything more exhausting than trying to “look expensive” constantly. I found that a really jarring phrase when I first read it on MN. I can’t imagine it ever being demanded of men, by themselves or anyone else. “Neat and well groomed” used to be the accepted standard in the conventional old days before everything got silly. I’m making myself sound twice my age here, but honestly. Grin

Good for you for chucking the yoke @HarrietHairbrush

fantastaballs · 21/06/2021 13:04

"I need a lot of attention"

You do know that every single person that dies their Gray hair is literally doing this? They are covering grey hair to give the impression of youthfulness so to appear sexually attractive. And anybody that denies this is lying.

I colour my hair and have it cut in all different styles as I get bored. I've had it rainbow, pastel, pet much every colour and length. Life is short and why shouldn't I ? The same reason I repeatedly go back to some holiday resorts (because they are like comfy slippers) and other times prefer to go on an adventure and explore new places.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 21/06/2021 13:04

@Myleftfoot39

If it was your GP, solicitor, etc with blue/purple hair. How would you feel?
Once went to my GP and she was in a pink tutu. Didn't give a shit, just wanted my prescription 💁🏽‍♀️
MedusasBadHairDay · 21/06/2021 13:09

I haven't yet tried all the possible colours, tones and combinations yet. And hair dye has improved massively since I was a teen. So it's still experimenting.

I'm going to keep dyeing my hair until I'm no longer capable tbh. If I enjoy it and it doesn't harm anyone else why wouldn't I?

SingingInTheShithouse · 21/06/2021 13:51

*Hello, there.

I agree. You should keep gods creation and his gift without any further adjustments.

Amen.*

Nah, SHE is all about free will & creativity Wink

That reminded me, my grandmother used to help at a beautician's school, part of which was as a guinea pig model sometimes, she went through all sorts of colours.

My mother also did reds and purples all the way - literally never saw her with her natural hair colour.

MrMeSeeks · 21/06/2021 13:56

I better quit my job then Hmm
I currently have bright streaks with visible piercings and tatts, and work in a professional job!
No-one gives a shit Confused
Not doing it for attention either, just like body modification and fun hair!
I’m also very good at my job Smile

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 21/06/2021 14:59

My hair is currently orange, has been purple, blue, green, pink, red (think that's all of them) over the years and I have visible tattoos.

Just been promoted to Director level in a very large global IT company.

Luckily not everyone thinks like you!

Exactly. It’s really not new to have not-seen-in-nature hair shades. What’s new is that it isn’t set in rollers. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Helendee · 21/06/2021 15:26

If we are not judging people by their appearance what happens if you swap vibrant hair colours with unconventional clothing.
How would you feel about the lawyer representing you in court wearing a multi-coloured nylon shell suit and trainers?

RickiTarr · 21/06/2021 15:30

We are heading that way. Everyone literally forgot to care and it’s creeping towards even the more formal arenas and professions.

Besides which, there are cultural issues, so that’s also hastening relaxation of hair and dress codes.
