Blue hair

I know a lot of people mid forties dyeing their hair blue or pink, I don’t get it. Why? It looks awful growing out and their natural colour is better.

OP posts:
romdowa · 21/06/2021 08:45

I'd be delighted if my doctor or solicitor worked in a place where they felt like they could express their personality by dying their hair what ever colour they wanted to. I bet you have an issue with "professionals" with tattoos or piercings as well 🙄🙄

LakieLady · 21/06/2021 08:46

@Choccorocco

You sound like my father 😆. He’s 78. Are you quite old, OP? I wonder if there is a generational difference in attitude to things like this.
Steady, @Choccorocco, I'm nearly 66 and think that some of the hair colours around now are just fantastic.

There's a lovely shade of blue that I've seen on a couple of women and I was considering it for myself. Then I remembered how old I am and realised that it might look like an old lady blue rinse gone wrong. Sad

Blanketpolicy · 21/06/2021 08:47

Brightly coloured hair can look fantastic on those that can pull it off. When you have hair that stands out so dramatically it is a lot of work keeping it bright and well styled and also the colour not clashing with skin tone.

I have never met a person in real life who has actually pulled it off and when something looks dramatically "wrong" it can give a poor and unprofessional first opinion.

EstuaryBird · 21/06/2021 08:49

I’m 66 and my hair is still below shoulder length and is dyed dark purple, not bright but shines purple/red highlights in the light. When it grows it’s ‘silver’ and purple. It makes me happy 😊

I couldn’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks 😂 ….. and I’d never judge anybody else’s hair colour either, because it’s nothing to do with me.

SticksAndStoned · 21/06/2021 08:50

@Myleftfoot39

I have friends who have had dyed hair (bright colours, mohicans) all their lives. They look great, lovely people and run an arts business.
Are they unprofessional?
SingingInTheShithouse · 21/06/2021 08:52

I just think dyeing your hair bright colours says ‘I need a lot of attention’

Pahahahahaha 😂😂😂😂😂😂 most idiotic ignorant comment of the day

Nobody is dying their hair for attention & in many cases it's quite the opposite as it scares off unwanted attention from lecherous gits in the street. I got way less hassle with pink, blue or purple hair than I ever did with blonde & it was bloody brilliant. DD says the same thing.

I also have many very professional friends at the top of their game with various shades of rainbow hair, piercings & tattoos.

I thought this sort of small minded & ignorant attitude went out with the ark Confused

Ragwort · 21/06/2021 08:56

poiny but are you therefore equally judging 'fuddy duddy' people, I have grey hair, wouldn't dream of dyeing it any colour - couldn't be bothered with the faff and expense. I dress in 'boring' clothes from charity shops I find it incredible that people are prepared to spend so much time and effort (& expense) on their appearance... but I try not to judge whether that is a £1k handbag or blue hair.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 21/06/2021 09:01

@MandalaYogaTapestry

OP I would feel the same about professionals with blue/pink hair. My first impression would be dubious, I couldn't take them seriously. That's why probably there are so few (if any) so such perception proves valid.

It’s attitudes like this that mean there are so few, not that you are right…full disclaimer am in my 50’s with pink highlights and I love them. They give me confidence nothing to do with attention seeking.

M0rT · 21/06/2021 09:02

When I see women with brightly colored hair I'm mostly jealous and if they are young I think good for you, make hay while the sun shines.
I'm not supposed to use any strong dyes/bleach anymore.
I worked for a genius level intelligent, competent woman starting my career and while she didn't have bright hair it was mostly unbrushed unless it was a presenting to the board day!
I've also worked in a female dominated industry where nearly all decision makers were women most of whom were not overly concerned with their appearance.
So they would be clean and respectably dressed but sensible shoes and low effort hair was the norm.
To be honest in the reverse of your bias I tend to assume the corporate barbies are receptionists/trainees.
Which I do know is also wrong just been most of my experience to date.

Great if you’re at a festival, great if you are on holiday but not so great if you are a high court judge.

Alternatively, I see it as someone who is very confident and doesn't mind standing out.

Dying your hair a bright colour isn't exactly the behaviour of someone who wants to just blend in.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

LakieLady · 21/06/2021 09:08

A former colleague of mine has had her hair almost every colour I can think of, and has multiple piercings.

Not only did she have a meteoric rise to a senior leadership role when she was a colleague, she was subsequently headhunted for a very senior role in a national regulatory body.

No-one ever doubted her professionalism, it was immediately apparent as soon as you heard her speak.

@Ragwort I buy nearly all my clothes from charity shops or I make them myself. My pink/bright red/purple/whatever hair is £5 of box dye every few months. I don't wear make up, don't bother with any kind of beauty treatments or similar and take no time whatsoever getting ready. Dyed hair doesn't necessarily take time!
Lora918 · 21/06/2021 09:12

@Myleftfoot39

If it was your GP, solicitor, etc with blue/purple hair. How would you feel?
Absolutely nothing. Why would I care about their appearance?
queenMab99 · 21/06/2021 09:12

I haven't dyed my hair any colour yet, however if we are judging other peoples choices, I would prefer to dye it pink or purple etc. rather than a natural colour, which seems to me to show that
you are trying to pass yourself off as younger, or more lovely than you really are, and your vanity may impede your ability to do your job.
I am 70 and now quite grey.

Nofruitta · 21/06/2021 09:13

I would judge inwardly but know I was being a twat because I was jealous of their ability to have no fucks to give about the negativity of others.

DynamoKev · 21/06/2021 09:13

Came on to agree it looks pish and is so ubiquitous people with natural hair are rare.

BUT OP's comments on "professionalism" are from the 1950s, so OP is B U.

drpet49 · 21/06/2021 09:15

Personally I think it looks stupid and attention seeking. But end of the day it is upto them.

NavigatingAdolescence · 21/06/2021 09:17

@Myleftfoot39

I see it as very unprofessional, I wouldn’t trust someone’s judgement if they had very brightly coloured hair. I would see at as attention seeking/instability
I have a very senior role and very bright purple hair, which I’ve had nothing but complements about for the last 3 years.

Maybe you need to broaden your horizons/open your mind a bit. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am not implying that women with blue hair are attention-seeking or anything, it may well be their personal preference and it's fair enough. Where jobs are concerned, they are free to challenge the perception at their own peril. Most business owners would not be happy with rainbow hair on employees precisely because of how they would be viewed by customers. And if most customers are not accepting that, it will cost such employers business. Unless it's an art sphere or something similar. It is not bigoted to have expectations of appearance. Boris Johnson has been further ridiculed for his hair and it is not even coloured.

Blueballinthegarden · 21/06/2021 09:30

The midwife who took my blood had bright pink hair, I loved it and we had a nice chat about it which took my mind off being stabbed with a needle Grin
I have had blue, pink, purple and orange hair and worked with many professional people…no-one has ever raised an eyebrow or considered it inappropriate.

DPotter · 21/06/2021 09:30

Well I'm in my 60s and I have blue streaks. The only comments I have received are totally complimentary. I have over the years had purple and red ones - not at the same time!

I pity people such as yourself OP whose view on life is so rigid and inflexible that you can't stomach something out of the ordinary.

ChristmasFluff · 21/06/2021 09:36

I've been a goth since my teens (now mid-50s).

Part of why I do it is to prevent myself from being in close relationships with people like the OP.

Many people who dye their hair brightly, or otherwise present differently to 'the norm', do it because they want to signal to their tribe, and they don't care about what non-tribe thinks.

beardeddragon174 · 21/06/2021 09:42

couldn't give a toss as long as they do their job.

I personally like bluey-green hair. mermaid hair, :)

OhGiveUp · 21/06/2021 09:47

Crikey, I never realised that all those old ladies of yesteryear who had blue and purple rinses were unstable attention seekers. 😮
