To think pants shouldn't be on the washing line if you have guests?

I attended a BBQ at a colleague's house this weekend (in the garden obviously) and I thought it was a bit strange because his pants were on the washing line in full view of everyone. I felt a bit embarrassed about it but he didn't seem phased. There were about 10 other people from work there.

Maybe I'm a bit odd, but I wouldn't put my underwear on the washing line if i have people over. AIBU? Confused

@Sirzy

I don’t put underwear on the line but I couldn’t get bothered by someone else doing so
I don't see this as being a contradiction . My DH rarely hangs undies on the line, not because he thinks it is gross, but because he can't be bothered to hang out dozens of smalls. He tumble dries them. I really could not get worked up about seeing underwear on the line, they are an essential item ffs!

I'd not have my underwear blowing on the line if I was having a get-together in my garden.
I remember last year sitting in mils garden and her lacy pants swinging above her head.
It just felt all wrong.

Yeah, I can't help but picture the person wearing the undies... I find it really gross! I realise that's my problem though.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 20/06/2021 18:10

Unless it's his only pair, I'd say it's not that odd. Grin
But leaving them out to acquire that charcoal grill fragrance...that's odd!

2bazookas · 20/06/2021 18:10

You're being very silly.

watingroom2 · 20/06/2021 18:20

I was mortified when my OH invited friends over and my pants were out washing

MrsSugar · 20/06/2021 18:34

I wouldn’t really glance twice at somebodies washing on a line ! We’ve all seen knickers before literally wouldn’t bat an eyelid unless there was something really odd hung up

FastFood · 20/06/2021 18:41

I couldn't care less, and as I never personally lived in a place where you can host a barbecue party, I wouldn't even think that it's a bad idea to have your washing on the line (makes sense though)

This said, I would try to avoid having people in my flat if I had some clothes drying on the airer, but just because its ugly and I'm flatproud. I try to have the airer out for less that 48h a week.

icelollycraving · 20/06/2021 18:43

I don’t put any of my underwear on the line. I’d definitely find it inappropriate to see a colleague’s pants flapping about on the line.
I don’t care if I sound Hyacinth. Hyacinth has standards don’t you know? Grin

RampantIvy · 20/06/2021 18:57

I really don't understand people who are too "Hyacinth" to put undies on the line. What do you think will happen? Maybe your more pervy neighbours will get their thrills by thinking that you don't wear any underwear at all? The Victorian era ended over 100 years ago.

My mum always hung all of the washing on the line and I do the same. I have a rotary dryer and put the smalls in the middle and the bigger items like towels and sheets on the outside, but that is simply more practical. I don't want my sheets dragging on the ground.

Lorw · 20/06/2021 18:59

Reckon there is more in life to worry about than someone’s pants on the line Grin

Wouldn’t bother me Grin

HoobleDooble · 20/06/2021 19:30

I wouldn't leave my apple catchers out if people were coming round, I'd be worried about someone getting tangled up, plus the state of some of them is shocking 😁 I do think it's a bit odd leaving your washing out if you're going to be lighting a barbecue.

Nothing wrong with having standards, ice lolly. I’d sooner be a Hyacinth

Unless they had skid marks YABU

StoneofDestiny · 20/06/2021 20:42

In fact, I've seen people with bras and pants on their radiators drying in photographs on estate agents websites. Now that's advanced level weird!

Then people will think you don't wear undergarments and you'll be the talk of the town.

aibubaby · 21/06/2021 01:09

@InFiveMins

I also bet everyone who attended felt exactly the same. It's weird.
Surely it's weirder to be fixating on your colleague's laundry habits?
JackieTheFart · 21/06/2021 01:20

I think I would feel a bit weird with it being a colleague. I don’t think it’s weird from their side, but I get where you’re coming from!

A friend or family member I wouldn’t be bothered.

junebirthdaygirl · 21/06/2021 08:53

I was at a surprise party in my friends garden . Her dh had us there waiting for his dw to return to SURPRISE!!! All l could think of is....the washing is on the line. I was itching to say something to him as l thought it will be embarrassing for his dw when she arrives but l didn't feel it was my place to start ordering him around. Any washing on the line with visitors would really get to me in my own garden. But the party went ahead with washing gently swaying in the breeze.

Auntienumber8 · 21/06/2021 09:00

I suppose it makes a stylish underpants bunting.

If I am entertaining I have a good tidy up so washing is never out.

CounsellorTroi · 21/06/2021 09:33

I get you OP. Having underwear on display is not quite the same as say sheets or towels which would not bother me.

Bluntness100 · 21/06/2021 09:39

I’m with you op. No way I’d invite my colleagues to thr garden and have my knickers hanging on the line. However I’d not even have my washing hanging out if I was having a party and would tidy up and make it look nice.
