To think pants shouldn't be on the washing line if you have guests?

I attended a BBQ at a colleague's house this weekend (in the garden obviously) and I thought it was a bit strange because his pants were on the washing line in full view of everyone. I felt a bit embarrassed about it but he didn't seem phased. There were about 10 other people from work there.

Maybe I'm a bit odd, but I wouldn't put my underwear on the washing line if i have people over. AIBU? Confused

You are fazed by some pants?😀
Oh dear you've had a sheltered life op.
I hope there was no swooning in shock.

jeanne16 · 20/06/2021 15:52

I think to have any clothes on the washing line when guests are in the garden is pretty grim.

Grim? Really?

Birkie248 · 20/06/2021 15:54

Lol at being fazed by pants. I can hear some Pearl Clutching happening.

DianeCherry · 20/06/2021 15:54

I wouldn't be bothered about seeing some bloke's pants on the line. There's no way I'd hang mine out if I had people coming round though

GreyhoundG1rl · 20/06/2021 15:57

@newnortherner111

I wouldn't do it, but he'll never dare play any joke on you at work now, will he? As you have the perfect comeback.
Eh? Haha, you hang your washing on the line? 🙄
TSSDNCOP · 20/06/2021 16:00

Mumsnet is an odd place at time, none more so than on the subject of washing.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 20/06/2021 16:00

Alright, Hyacinth

sbhydrogen · 20/06/2021 16:01

Ha, I'm with you OP! That would bother me. I don't want to be looking at anybody's pants (or vests or bras) when I'm a guest.

BackforGood · 20/06/2021 16:01

@AutoGroup

I wouldn't leave the washing out if I was entertaining in the garden, just because the garden looks nicer without it, just like I'd tidy the living room before having guests, but I wouldn't be embarrassed if someone else did.
This, and what CroneAVirus said.

I mean, If I pop by to someone's unexpectedly, or just drop into my sister's for a coffee, then I'd think it perfectly normal and reasonable and no unexpected for there to be washing on the line, but if you are inviting colleagues over for a BBQ, then you'd tidy up a bit first, surely, as you would your house if they were coming inside. You wouldn't hang your washing out just before they came round, and I think anyone saying differently is in a very small minority of the population as a whole, even if not amongst the posters responding to this thread.

itsgettingwierd · 20/06/2021 16:04

Wouldn't be bothered at pants on line.

Would find it odd they are left out whilst BBQ going. (Unless huge garden where they are well away from each other)

Would probably find it a little strange if it's just pants and no other clothes but I wouldn't be embarrassed by it.

LordOfTheOnionRings · 20/06/2021 16:07

OMG people wear pants ewwwwwwwwwwwwww

IliveonCoffee · 20/06/2021 16:08

I'd think it a little strange if washing/drying and other chores weren't done in advance or after a planned event like a BBQ. In the same way you'd make sure the washing up was done, and the toilet cleaned.

But if was just a visit or no particular event, I don't think I'd be too bothered. Washing does need drying after all.

I suppose I see it more as any chores - if you're hosting an event then I wouldn't expect to see washing at any stage of being done, or the kitchen unclean etc. But if I'm just visiting I wouldn't mind chatting while washing up or hanging some washing.

pineapplesareyellow · 20/06/2021 16:11

I'm absolutely with you OP and would feel the same way.

RampantIvy · 20/06/2021 16:11

@Sirzy

I don’t put underwear on the line but I couldn’t get bothered by someone else doing so
Why not? I don't understand the tweeness of not putting underwear on the line. This is the 21st century not the Victorian era.

I do think it odd to have washing on the line when you have guests round for a barbecue though.

Frazzled2207 · 20/06/2021 16:12

Wouldn’t bother me but personally if I knew people were coming round I’d aim to have the washing in beforehand

PegasusReturns · 20/06/2021 16:13

Yes it’s odd and it’s odd that other posters don’t think it’s odd Grin

GreyhoundG1rl · 20/06/2021 16:15

Why would you not put underwear on a washing line? That's two posters who've claimed they don't.

Sirzy · 20/06/2021 16:16

I have no idea why I don’t, there is no logical reason for it just a continuation of what I learnt as a child. Socks never on the line after putting my foot into one and a wasp being in it tjough!

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 20/06/2021 16:17

Tanga briefs were they?
Think yourself lucky the bbq wasn't on a Tuesday, that's gimp mask washing day.

EveningOverRooftops · 20/06/2021 16:17

Pants are Ok. I hang my dildos on the line to dry and no one bats an eyelid. Hmm

mumwon · 20/06/2021 16:19

Well - at least he washes them Grin
I heard a story about someone's next door neighbour complaining they could see their washing over the fence which didn't look nice when they were having a bbq in their garden(which the neighbour with the washing wasn't told about!) !
For goodness sake - mind you know which ones he is wearing afterwards when he walks behind you (smoky smell) so you could do some sexist teasing! (ahem - of course you won't!) but Oh, the temptation!

VeryQuaintIrene · 20/06/2021 16:20

Wouldn't bother me at all but those pants might get all smoke-infused.

Singingtherapy · 20/06/2021 16:21

Yes it’s odd and it’s odd that other posters don’t think it’s odd

Totally! It's nothing to do with being fazed or pearl clutching. If I popped over to a colleague's house uninvited and their underwear was hanging up to dry I wouldn't even register it was there. But most people tidy up a bit when they're hosting, regardless of whether it's indoors or out. And that very much includes putting their pants away!

@jeanne16

What, in case they become aware you... have clothes? That you... do housework?
