To think pants shouldn't be on the washing line if you have guests?

I attended a BBQ at a colleague's house this weekend (in the garden obviously) and I thought it was a bit strange because his pants were on the washing line in full view of everyone. I felt a bit embarrassed about it but he didn't seem phased. There were about 10 other people from work there.

Maybe I'm a bit odd, but I wouldn't put my underwear on the washing line if i have people over. AIBU? Confused

I would not leave my knickers on the line if my colleagues (male or female) were coming over.

I work from home and sometimes my nearest colleague does come over so we can work together. I'd leave washing on the line in that situation as I'm not entertaining (but I still don't want him seeing my undies).

If I was inviting them over socially then I wouldn't have any washing out at all.

Likewise I don't really want to see my colleagues' underwear either.

AcrobaticAlphabet · 20/06/2021 17:17

I think to have any clothes on the washing line when guests are in the garden is pretty grim.

Grim is such an odd adjective to apply to clean clothes hanging out to dry.

But, I would move my washing if I was having guests (in the same way I’d tidy the sofas if I’m expecting people in the living room or clear the table if I’m having dinner guests). However I wouldn’t be phased if I saw other people leave their washing out. It’s really not ‘grim’. In fact I think finding out Susan from the office wears kinky crotchless pants and Dave has been wearing his Christmas brussel sprout pants in summer is somewhat amusing.

What's to be embarrassed about?🤔 It's a garment, an item of clothing. I hang all my clothing out, pants, socks the lot.

AcrobaticAlphabet · 20/06/2021 17:19

I’m also wondering if I’m the only person who puts all underwear on the IKEA octopus and then pops that on the line to dry.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/06/2021 17:20

pants? no
mankini? I'd take photos

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/06/2021 17:21

were they getting darked on and did spiders rub their willies on them?

EscapeToTheMountains · 20/06/2021 17:22

Yes, it's a bit odd, imo. I'd hang them inside if I expected company, or at the very least hide them behind something else on the clothesline.

*Brilliant name I took from a thread on mn a couple of weeks ago.

SamMil · 20/06/2021 17:31

I really couldn't care less about seeing someone else's underwear. I'm not particularly prissy.

PracticingPerson · 20/06/2021 17:32

@Sirzy

I don’t put underwear on the line but I couldn’t get bothered by someone else doing so
Me too, I wouldn't be embarrassed to see them.
StrongerOrWeaker · 20/06/2021 17:32

I agree with you.

VerticalHorizon · 20/06/2021 17:33

I'd put mine on the tip grill of the BBQ to dry. Can't see a problem with it.

VerticalHorizon · 20/06/2021 17:33

And people saying they’re just clothes - they’re not, they’reunderwear. To be wornunderyour clothes and not supposed to be seen by all and sundry.
They're on the line, not on my bum. They are just thr Sainsburys black five pack, nothing to get excited about.

Tal45 · 20/06/2021 17:37

I can understand you might not want everyone seeing a lacy thong - but blokes boxer shorts?? Or did he have briefs/y fronts, if so then I would have had the ick big time.

FlorenceWintle · 20/06/2021 17:39

But isn’t this contradictory? It’s either fine for people to randomly see each other’s underwear or it isn’t. If it is, then why aren’t yours on the line and if it isn’t, then why don’t you find him odd for having his there?
MaybeCrazy2 · 20/06/2021 17:40

I would actually think it’s a bit off, but I wouldn’t be offended/judge it, think about it more than 5 seconds.

I wouldn’t do it myself though with people over.

Muddydoor · 20/06/2021 17:47

As I understand it, you only need yo hide your dirty washing...

not that people seem so bothered about airing their dirty washing nowadays

mumwon · 20/06/2021 17:48

I don't (own) use a tumble drier - so dry weather =washing everything & drying outside is best
Zooms were an issue because being wet & winter washing was on my airer - so we had to make sure we angled the camera away from drying washing (all over the house) - heavens, worries, the site of my undies would terrify the family & leave them marked for life & needing therapy Grin

You can have some standards but accept that everybody is different surely? Just because you do think differently doesn't have to mean you judge them for their choices.

GreyhoundG1rl · 20/06/2021 17:50

Standards... Hmm

motogogo · 20/06/2021 17:51

I wouldn't have them out for a bbq because I don't want my clothes smelling, nothing to do with them being on show

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 17:51

GreyhoundG1r
Really you can't comprehend that a young teen might be embarrassed for others to see her bras and pants? Of course you don't. Hmm

WestendVBroadway · 20/06/2021 17:52

Absolutely disgraceful that your colleague should give away the fact that he wears underpants.

longtompot · 20/06/2021 17:54

I wouldn't have any washing in the line if I was having a bbq or a garden party. It wouldn't bother me if I went to someone's house and they had theirs on the line though.
