Déclassé for adults to wear football strip and decorate their house with flags for the Euros?

WhataMissMap · 20/06/2021 13:45

My young (New) neighbours do this.
It looks like a bit of fun to me. All the other neighbours in my area are appalled.
Is it a new thing? When my children were small only little boys and (some)girls seemed to dress up in rugby/football strips. The world has moved on and I didn’t notice!

Midnight- I don't watch it

Shamoo · 20/06/2021 18:40

Football shirt or full football kit?! Because there is a very big difference 😂😂😂

BackforGood · 20/06/2021 18:41

I think it's more likely to do with the problems there have been with racism in football and the way the England and, to a lesser extent, the UK, national flags have been hijacked by the far right.

I would certainly feel uncomfortable if any of my neighbours had an England hanging outside their house

If you can't differentiate between someone about to set off on a National Front or EDL march, and someone who is supporting their National side in a major sporting event, I'd say it is you that has the problem, not them.

NiceGerbil · 20/06/2021 18:43

Oh it's fine by me when there's big England stuff going on.

I don't like when England flag is in window or of balcony etc all year round.

Macncheeseballs · 20/06/2021 18:45

Yeah that's right, it's the people who don't like football and all its negative connotations that have the problem Hmm

BearOfEasttown · 20/06/2021 18:50

What a nasty classist thread. Hmm

Shame on you @WhataMissMap Hmm

Funnylittlefloozie · 20/06/2021 18:51

Actually, I think it would be good if as many English people, of all ethnic origins, hung out the English flag. Reclaim the flag from knuckle-draggers and flag-shaggers, and fly it as a matter of course like they do in France / Germany / Denmark / Sweden / USA / bloody everywhere! Make the racists and hate mongers go and find something else to wave.

Lagomtransplant · 20/06/2021 18:54

Omg, you only live once. If you like football, go for it. If not, live and let live. What is the point of obsessing what the neighbours will think? Newsflash: most likely something along the order of THEIR kids, THEIR aging parents, THEIR covid situation, THEIR jobs, THEIR rents/mortgages, THEIR MOTS, etc. You really don't even blip other radar for more than the splitsecond it takes to say hi.

Mankyfruitbowl · 20/06/2021 18:57

There's nothing wrong with it, there's a major sporting tournament on and it's a bit of fun.

But... Does it honestly surprise you that some snobby types don't see England shirts and plastic car-flags as particularly posh or aspirational? Grin

Newrumpus · 20/06/2021 19:03

There have been several threads using football as a way to have a go at the working class. Not enjoying the game is one thing. But the name-calling and snobbery (not just on this thread) is tiresome. Football does so much positive for so many youngsters in this country and seems to create resentment amongst those who have no sense of solitary and don’t like to see working class talent rewarded.

wigornian · 20/06/2021 19:29

Football was banned at my private school, during the 1980s. The headmaster said “it is a game played and watched by hooligans!”

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/06/2021 19:31

@ViciousJackdaw

No judgement here. Unless the adults are wearing the jersey and the shorts that go with it. Then they are 'full kit wankers'.

I'm sorry you're unable to enjoy the Euros, OP. It seems such a shame to turn your nose up at the games and the celebrations simply because you feel it beneath you.

I think they need the socks as well to be full kit wankers and maybe shin pads Grin
SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/06/2021 19:36

Where doea ice hockey stand on class level😂
I have national jersey, we paint our faces, people put flags kn a car. And og you should see it when we beated a certain country in finale😂 You would think the whole country won euromillions😂

ThinWomansBrain · 20/06/2021 19:37

Do they have a white van as well?
Is OP related to Emily Thornberry?

Laiste · 20/06/2021 19:42

IT'S NOT AN ENGLAND FLAG.

OPs neighbours are Scottish.

Oblomov21 · 20/06/2021 19:45

I disagree. I no longer see it as a working class thing. After the shitty year we've all had, a bit of decent weather a few weeks ago, for May 1/2 term, and the start of the euros is exactly what we all need.

Just in case you thought GB doesn't have hockey fans, here's a story about a home-made fanzone during the recent World Championship in Riga: GB hockey fans

They're not the biggest group of fans, and they'll never be as loud as the Finns or the Latvians, but they have a lot of fun at the tournaments. Unfortunately, despite GB having its best World Championship performance since 1962, there's almost no attention to the game in the national media.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/06/2021 20:00

I was so surprised that it's properly ignored that GB got to Elite for this year. Shame. Great sport and my favourite memories are of bunch of us in pubs (before moving to UK) and roar @andyindurham 😁
That's a lovely article

Well said.
The title of this thread is just so sneering.

I put my England flag in the window for any major sporting tournament in which I am supporting England. Not sure what that has to do with class, but has everything to do with supporting my team.

OP says she sees it as a bit of fun - it’s her neighbours that don’t like it.

Bairnsmum05 · 20/06/2021 20:57

Scottish flags and bunting everywhere up here, love it!

Seesawmummadaw · 20/06/2021 20:58

I love the word déclassé.

YonderTweek · 20/06/2021 21:13

I live in quite a naice area and people have loads of flags out at the moment. I've seen plenty of English, Welsh and Scottish flags but also a few Spanish ones, a Portuguese one and some German ones. I like it. Smile
