Déclassé for adults to wear football strip and decorate their house with flags for the Euros?

WhataMissMap · 20/06/2021 13:45

My young (New) neighbours do this.
It looks like a bit of fun to me. All the other neighbours in my area are appalled.
Is it a new thing? When my children were small only little boys and (some)girls seemed to dress up in rugby/football strips. The world has moved on and I didn’t notice!

Is it the England flag?

AutoGroup · 20/06/2021 13:52

Yes, of course. Football is entirely working class, one of the last bastions in sport and demonstrating any sort of interest marks you as such. Despite some people's determination to conceal their working class backgrounds, being working class is not actually a character flaw.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/06/2021 13:52

There is nothing wromg with bot of fun and team support. If anyone has an issue with England flag while England is playing, they need to stop being drama llamas

ilovesooty · 20/06/2021 13:54

Declasse? (can't do accents).

Seems a bit pretentious.

RaspberryCoulis · 20/06/2021 13:56

She means common as muck.

And yes, it is.

QuadrupleCarbs · 20/06/2021 13:56

Adults have worn football tops when supporting their team, for exercise or just casual wear for years, that's not a new thing.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/06/2021 13:57

Only if its England flags and strips. All others are perfectly acceptable.

Whyhello · 20/06/2021 13:59

No issue with people wearing football shirts. My Dad is French and regularly used to wind people up walking around with his France shirt on during World Cup/Euro tournaments, none more so than when France have actually won Grin.

The flags are a bit much though, just seems a bit tacky.

Ohdeariedear · 20/06/2021 14:00

I am loving it. We were driving somewhere on Friday night and it was lovely to see all the saltires hanging out windows and people with Scotland strips out and about, obviously on their way to watch the match. Feels like a really nice communal experience, which is extra special after months of lockdown. I’m all for it.

Sunbird24 · 20/06/2021 14:01

I wish my neighbour would wear a football top, to cover up his beer belly…

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/06/2021 14:01

I love it, very supportive of anyone going to town with it all.

NotTheFunKindOfFeminist · 20/06/2021 14:07

It's funny how people don't complain about people flying the GB flag during the Olympics...

It's almost as if there's a bit of snobbery towards football...

@AutoGroup

we are not working class. in fact I'm not even English. I still have those carflags on my Jaguar for fun.
Go on England!!!

ViciousJackdaw · 20/06/2021 14:40

No judgement here. Unless the adults are wearing the jersey and the shorts that go with it. Then they are 'full kit wankers'.

I'm sorry you're unable to enjoy the Euros, OP. It seems such a shame to turn your nose up at the games and the celebrations simply because you feel it beneath you.

newnortherner111 · 20/06/2021 14:42

As long as they come down when England are knocked out next week, I'm sure not unreasonable to manage for that time.

Just hope they don't go over the top at Christmas.

The football loving neighbours are Scottish, professional people.
My mother (90+) is half Italian. She wants a flag too now.
We are looking forward to watching the match today and discovering what we have been missing.

Don't see the issue.. get use out of them while England are still in it.

therocinante · 20/06/2021 14:50

@Majorfluff

Nothing worse than seeing a fat Geordie or Scotsman in a football top.
Nothing worse than a judgemental prick.
Gullible2021 · 20/06/2021 14:57

I think it's seen by many people more of a working class thing to do. Not necessarily the wearing a kit or football shirt but the decorating the house with flags etc.

Football is more of a working class sport with a working class following.

Football was banned at my school (independent) as it was seen as "lower class". Rugby was a religion at that school. Many of my peers at different independent schools had similar experiences. When pupils petitioned or protested they were told "it doesn't incorporate the sort of aspirations or ethos we want to encourage in our school". Ironically, many of the parents were season ticket holders to the premier league and international teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona etc) and had access to the corporate hospitality there. Some of the parents even OWNED clubs or were major shareholders. But there was certainly a snobbery towards football being "for the working class" and football was seen as a sport for "hooligans".

There's nothing wrong with being working class.

There's a lot wrong with being a snob.

Rowgtfc72 · 20/06/2021 14:59

My England flag isn't up, but only because I can't find it! All my neighbours are flying theirs.
I also own an England top and local football team tops.
At work on Friday we were all singing England songs, the Polish employees where joining in and making us "come on England " stickers.
It's a bit of fun and like previous posters have said, another couple of games and it'll all be over for England🙂

ZaraW · 20/06/2021 15:07

I'm not a football but it wouldn't bother me. It's been a crap year and seeing people enjoying themselves is hardly a crime is it?

PinataPam · 20/06/2021 15:12

Not déclassé but I know that for many people of colour the England flag flying outside a house at any time (but particularly during football tournaments) still rings alarm bells, whether or not it reflects the reality of the people flying it. So I wouldn't be keen.

justasking111 · 20/06/2021 15:13

Welsh folk dig out the red tops, dragons, flags etc. Various neighbours dig out their national stuff no-one here bats an eyelid. It's sport
