Déclassé for adults to wear football strip and decorate their house with flags for the Euros?

My young (New) neighbours do this.
It looks like a bit of fun to me. All the other neighbours in my area are appalled.
Is it a new thing? When my children were small only little boys and (some)girls seemed to dress up in rugby/football strips. The world has moved on and I didn’t notice!

Hmm, I think one negative point is that few of these people have a physique similar to that of a professional football player.

One wonders what these people wear when the World Luge Championships are taking place, and I really don't want to think about them waddling about in swimming trunks for the World Aquatics Championships.

Iknowtheanswer · 20/06/2021 15:42

Is this the sort of thing you're concerned about?

(definitely not a working class area... Smile)

I live in Scotland and before this week have never seen Scotland flags in windows or hanging from balconies (super fancy concierge assisted apartment blocks.) Made me smile every time I walked past one.

KarmaStar · 20/06/2021 16:02

Judge people why don't you all?

BackforGood · 20/06/2021 16:15

I'm sorry you're unable to enjoy the Euros, OP. It seems such a shame to turn your nose up at the games and the celebrations simply because you feel it beneath you.

Well said.
The title of this thread is just so sneering.

I put my England flag in the window for any major sporting tournament in which I am supporting England. Not sure what that has to do with class, but has everything to do with supporting my team.

Remembering39862 · 20/06/2021 16:36

My dad currently has an England flag hanging out of his bedroom window, 4 car flags (one on each door), a magnetic flag on the car bonnet, and England fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror!

He is mid fifties, lives in a “naice” area, and is thoroughly middle class, but he loves going all out for the football - and why not? If it makes him smile, why should anyone else care?

goose1964 · 20/06/2021 16:42

Our neighbour has an English flag in their window. My son threatened to put a Welsh flag out ,and didn't because it's only football. DH wore a t-shirt with weekend forecast ,drinking with a chance of rugby breaking out and had loads of positive contents. My other DS was in a pub showing the football but spent all his time chatting to someone else about rugby.

It's also a bit sneery to criticise people for not liking football, the whole thing is very divisive, and I can't wait for it to all be over

thegcatsmother · 20/06/2021 17:11

I used to live in Belgium, and when the World Cup was last on, the Count (minor nobility, not a misspelling) who lived next door had Belgian flags hung from his windows, as did most of the houses near us. You could spot which nationality lived in which house from the flags.

Quincejam · 20/06/2021 17:14

What a load of snobbish rubbish. We hold football get togethers all the time with sport loving friends - put the odd flag up, some wear a football top and we are all pretty well healed - it's just a bit of fun and an excuse to get together!

LifeOfBriony · 20/06/2021 17:19

I love seeing the flags, but there don't seem to be so many this year. It's just a bit of fun, and this year we need something to cheer us up!

Quaggars · 20/06/2021 17:23

I'm not a football fan, but meh, it's what you like isn't it.
So what if people get a bit patriotic when their football team's on?
Even I do and I hate football lol

Midnightballerina · 20/06/2021 17:24

My neighbours garden could be mistaken for a pub. They have a big projector screen set up, inflatables & all of the team flags flying. I think it's great. Something to take our minds off all the covid doom & gloom.

Macncheeseballs · 20/06/2021 17:50

For some of us the football is the doom and gloom

baggies · 20/06/2021 17:54

We love our football. We're both 60+ and hang our England flags outside during every euros and World Cup. It's just a bit of fun and we're both proud of our national team and love the banter it brings with our Irish neighbours!

ChaToilLeam · 20/06/2021 18:00

Not my cup of tea, I don’t like football and neither does DP. But flags and shirts and supporting your team is pretty harmless. The beer gardens in Munich yesterday were populated by people in Germany and Portugal strips, and I’ve seen lots of flags on cars. DP prefers rugby and then it’s Wales all the way. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

So don't watch it
paniniswapx3 · 20/06/2021 18:02

Our England flag is out but we're the only ones on our street (a very naice street!). I'm not actually English but my DH is, but if you can't fly your home flag during a big tournament, then when can you! (And if Ireland were in it then the Irish flag would definitely be out loud and proud!)

Daphnise · 20/06/2021 18:06

Do you actually know what déclassé means?

LakieLady · 20/06/2021 18:09

@NotTheFunKindOfFeminist

It's funny how people don't complain about people flying the GB flag during the Olympics...

It's almost as if there's a bit of snobbery towards football...

I think it's more likely to do with the problems there have been with racism in football and the way the England and, to a lesser extent, the UK, national flags have been hijacked by the far right.

I would certainly feel uncomfortable if any of my neighbours had an England hanging outside their house.

Slippy78 · 20/06/2021 18:11

Only in England is it seen as common or lower class to fly your countries flag. Everywhere else it's a mark of pride for your country and flags can usually be seen year round.

bitheby · 20/06/2021 18:16

It's so pointless to judge people based on stereotypes. My family are all working class. Grandfathers both in trades. I was the first in my family to go to university and went to Cambridge. I was friendly with farmers' daughter and judges' sons. Does any of it actually matter?

No. I can tell you it doesn't matter. Judge people on whether they treat others with respect. Not what sport they enjoy or how they decorate their houses.

stopgap · 20/06/2021 18:25

I’m in the US, but proudly have my flag flying from my garden fence, as do other Brits in town. Raised working-class, but now live in one of the wealthiest towns in the US. It’s seen as cool to fly team/country flags from your house to coincide with various sporting events.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 20/06/2021 18:28

Not as déclassé as using the word déclassé.
