AIBU?

...to think that bringing your morning coffee to church is a bit inappropriate?

I'm pretty sure I'm just being a judgy old gimmer - thought a Sunday morning AIBU thrashing would be in order.

Just passed a group of school mums as they were coming back from church. They were all carrying portable coffee flasks and sipping from them.

I mean, yes I understand the need for coffee in the morning, but part of me thought - is there really such a pressing need to bring your coffee to a formal church service? Can you really not go a whole hour (less actually) without coffee? And then there's something just a bit odd about it. You're going to church, not the theatre, I don't know - my experience of church services is formal. It would have been seen as inappropriate to bring coffee - you have your tea and coffee after the service - but then as I say, maybe I'm just an old gimmer. Is this normal at church now?

So just to caveat this - no, it doesn't occupy a great deal of my thoughts; yes, I do have other more important things to worry about; yes I do have friends; no, I'm not judging their worth as people based on whether they drink coffee during the service or not, I just had a passing thought and wondered what others thought.

Our church encourages people to bring a flask of coffee to drink as they chat outside after the service, as we are not allowed to serve it ( or to chat inside).

@ColdTattyWaitingForSummer we have breakfast before our church service (pre COVID obvs) and are actively encouraged to top up our cups before the service starts.
There is plenty of precedent in the bible for Jesus sharing food with his followers while teaching so I really don’t think God would see any problem with it.

@deathbypostitnote

Would you take a cup of coffee into the interview room.

Is God sizing you up for a job or welcoming you to a precious family gathering?

When isn't God sizing us up for a job?!

On 5th Sundays, one church I worked at turned the church into a cafe and had croissants etc during the service! CofE! Church doesn't have to be stuffy.

I will continue to take my thermos cup of tea, keeps me warm in winter at least

I guess it depends on the code of conduct of the church, one church I went in, localish to me, had it's own cafe where you could get drinks and or breakfast, just before service.

One Anglican church I went to for Easter served champagne afterwards! (I'm RC but freely admit the Anglicans have served the best snacks.)

@EssentialHummus didn't know we were allowed to stray beyond Christian denominations! Hands down the best pavlova and walnut cake at Orthodox Jewish. But I DREAM of the spinach pies and mango mousse with the friends who invited us to break fast at Eid.

Our church always served tea, filter coffee, squash and biscuits after the service. It was a lovely time to catch up with each other, particularly if we hadn't seen each other during the week. Because of Covid we can't do that at the moment but we can meet in the car park after the service. Perhaps those people the OP saw took drinks for after church. And for the avoidance of doubt, there are plenty of churches without any links to any schools. Everyone I know goes to church to hear about Jesus.

I'm starting to wonder if my attendance of places of worship just follows the snacks.

It should be the Presbyterian traybake thread, available throughout Northern Ireland at all good garden centres without the woeful music.

I'm not a mass goer but it gives my mother to rage to see people giving their children snacks (including biscuits in a carpeted building) during a 35 minute mass. WTF, increasingly people seem to be unable to go more than 30 minutes without shoving either food or liquid into their pie hole. Don't get me started on takeaway coffee cups on woodland walks, most of which I am willing to bet are left tucked into a bush rather than carried back to the car. These people are inevitably of a type and think they look cool and sophisticated but just look like bell ends. In my opinion Smile

You think people are drinking take away coffee in order to look cool and sophisticated?

I think most people who are drinking take away coffee are doing so because they fancied a coffee.

If they've gone to the service fasting, it's reasonable to take a thermos or insulated cup so they can have something as soon as it ends, I think!

We're shifting to offering tea and coffee and something to eat before the worship part of our service. That way we can socialise, warm up and welcome newcomers rather than presenting them with silent rows of the backs of our heads!

Not the specific people I see on these woodland walks. Combined with their clothes, car, even type of buggy they are using, they go around with the coffee like they are in an ad for some godawful lifestyle brand. Coffee and the shite talked about it has (inexplicably to my mind) become a massive social signifier.

Yes, kiddush at many synagogues the week there’s a simcha (celebration) like a wedding or bar mitzvah is quite something. Or in some synagogues just the regular one. I went to a synagogue where the regular after service kiddush on a shabbat morning was quiches, salads, cakes, ice creams. At ours if there’s a big event you can expect a smoked salmon station, salt beef station, hot food, desserts, a bath with soft drinks, wine and spirits. Man I miss kiddushim
