To think my neighbour can drill a whole in my house to permanently hang a 15ft tarpaulin?

So, name changed as obviously outting as pretty sure this isn't a normal occurance!

My neighbour has drilled a hole in my (grade 2 listed) building so she can permanently hang a piece of tarpaulin about 15ft up (as high as my 1st floor roof) for "privacy". Surely she can't just do this? Where do I go from here? It blocks all the light out to my ground floor windows now. Have included (bad) diagram.

@Euro21widow - is there any update to your situation? I just got to thinking about it as the weather is about to become very autumnal and that will mean higher winds and lots of rain.

Planning departments can be quite tandom in what isnor is not enforced.

I don’t quite follow the structure but as it’s vertical I would start calling it a retractable fabric fence rather than a non-permanent awning. The law is clear that fences can’t be higher than 2m (measured on the lowest side). Keep repeating this to planning that it is basically a fence which is 9ft taller than the legal limit.

If it’s definitely your wall, and not a party wall, then you could make a police complaint re criminal damage, or send her a lawyer letter re civil case for damages to your property. BUT it does look to me a lot like a party wall, in which case she might well be entitled to attach things to it. Just not things this high.

If planning officer says its ok ask who you can appeal to / how legally challenge it.

No she cannot attach a tarpaulin or indeed anything whatsoever to your wall.

Write her a letter about her committing criminal damage on your property.

Give her 7 days to fill the hole and make good so that it looks exactly as it did before.

Warn her that failure to do this will result in your (a) reporting her to the police and (b) suing her privately for the damage and for your bill in bringing in a builder to repair the damage.
