Aibu to think it was unfair to name the security guards who made mistakes in the Manchester arena bombings

They were young security guards and made huge mistakes but I do think it was very unfair to name them. I think one of them was 19 at the time. I wonder about the training they were given. they have to live with what they did or didn’t do for the rest of their lives. The police who went for a two hour food break to a kebab house 5 miles away were not named

I couldn’t agree more

jellybeansforbreakfast · 17/06/2021 17:15

That does bother me too!

I can only feel sorry for them. I did in the immediate aftermath, I do more so now!

romdowa · 17/06/2021 17:17

Totally wrong , no matter what mistakes they made, they didn't bomb anybody that day. The fault lays solely at the bombers feet at the end of the day.

Tealightsandd · 17/06/2021 17:19

YANBU

How nasty to try to target blame (for what is partly government policy failings) on badly paid poorly trained young staff (who are no doubt themselves still traumatised).

Bloomsbury45 · 17/06/2021 17:23

The people responsible for the Manchester bombing were the bomber, those who helped him make the bomb and those who radicalised him.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 17/06/2021 17:23

I used to work for the security company in question...nothings changed in 25 years

FrankButchersDickieBow · 17/06/2021 17:26

Security companies notoriously treat their staff like shit, to ensure they turn a profit.

Sgite wages, shite training. Minimum pay, minimum breaks, minimum everything else.

I feel sorry for them being named.

GrandTheftWalrus · 17/06/2021 17:28

They shouldn't name the security. There are lots that don't get any training etc and are put in positions they shouldn't be.

pheonixrebirth · 17/06/2021 17:28

YANBU! A security guard does a 5 day course covering various aspects of security work, definitely not enough training to qualify them as another emergency responder/criminal profiler. I have a family member who works security and they are mostly on the look out for drunks and thieves.

PawsQueen · 17/06/2021 17:30

Totally wrong. They also named the paramedic who is a guy I would pick to have there if I was in desperate need
They pulled him up for not treating, but the first thing of any incident like that is triage, and he went in alone when it wasn't even know to be safe

MadeOfStarStuff · 17/06/2021 17:38

YANBU

as PP said, regardless of any mistakes made, they weren’t responsible for the bombing.

We all make mistakes at work sometimes. Thankfully for most people and in most situations the consequences aren’t so tragic or so public. If it was negligence rather than a mistake then their employer should take disciplinary action but even then there’s no need for them to be named publicly.

dappledsunshine · 17/06/2021 17:40

YANBU while it's important lessons are learned it's really not fair naming them, the security company have a wider responsibility for making sure they are trained sufficiently with working radios and know exactly what to do in a scenario like this. I really feel for them.

BarbarianMum · 17/06/2021 17:46

I wonder what would have happened to them if they had challenged the bomber? I suspect their names would be inscribed on a small plaque somewhere and they'd be totally forgotten.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 17/06/2021 18:09

I read somewhere last year, that he was afraid of confronting him in case he was considered racist. Poor guy

MaskingForIt · 17/06/2021 18:23

YADNBUIf they confronted every brown bearded man with a rucksack they’d be called racists.

MaskingForIt · 17/06/2021 18:26

@romdowa

Totally wrong , no matter what mistakes they made, they didn't bomb anybody that day. The fault lays solely at the bombers feet at the end of the day.
Yep. Much like the only people to blame for rapes are rapists, the only people to blame for terrorism is terrorists.
PrimulaPrimrose · 17/06/2021 18:28

YANBU.

Notonthestairs · 17/06/2021 18:39

They shouldn't name individuals.

They absolutely should be naming security firms and revealing the lack of training and any other failures on the part of venues (blind spots on cameras).

I will return to every theatre show I can get to and I want to know (as I'm dragging my kids along with me) the right practices are being followed as far as practicable.

ssd · 17/06/2021 18:40

Totally agree @Newpuppymummy

mbosnz · 17/06/2021 18:41

Absolutely agree, and I too wonder why the police who should have been inside, but were too busy munching on a kebab to do their job were not named. Being far more experienced, better equipped, and far better trained. . .

Squirrelblanket · 17/06/2021 18:41

The kebab eating police officers HAVE been named.

Amdone123 · 17/06/2021 18:53

YNBU.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

FindingMeno · 17/06/2021 18:55

Yanbu.

cashoncollection · 17/06/2021 19:02

Totally agree. The point at which they saw him, it was probably already too late to prevent an attack. If they’d have challenged him no doubt he would have detonated and killed them. It’s an awful thing to face, and they were only a small piece of the puzzle.

Newpuppymummy · 17/06/2021 21:38

@Squirrelblanket I didn’t realise they had been named. They weren’t in the article I read.
