AIBU to move from Nottingham to Mansfield?

Have lived in naice parts of Nottingham (West Bridgford, The Park, Mapperley Park) forever and am now considering our next house move now the kids have all gone.

Am I mad to consider moving to Mansfield? Only 15 miles away, and much cheaper for similar house types. We could pay off our mortgage, get a similar house with a much bigger garden and still live in a sizeable town with a cinema, theatre, town centre market etc.

My partner thinks I’m mad. What’s Mansfield like to live in? Are there any hidden gems in the town centre?

I just sent this link to my mum. Her response:

"Good god"

I don't live in Nottingham these days, but would suggest Beeston or Chillwell.

MasterBeth · 17/06/2021 19:00

We have around £400k to spend. We could get a Manno mansion!

Not even in Berry Hill or somewhere round there?

@Auntienumber8

You know when Rebecca Adlington got her gold medal they renamed the Weatherspoon's after her. I think that’s sums up Mansfield nicely.
Not only is this wrong (unless Rebecca Adlington is a Widow's Frost or a cock/pheasant), what are you even trying to say? That naming places after successful people sums up Mansfield as... A place which celebrates people?! It was the leisure centre, btw. Biscuit
NotMeNoNo · 17/06/2021 19:02

Why not just move to a less expensive area of Nottingham and keep the amenities?

Dinnertime22 · 17/06/2021 19:02

Southwell, Ruddington or Hucknall. Beeston is OK too.
Not Mansfield or Bulwell.

AgeLikeWine · 17/06/2021 19:05

Good grief, no.

There is just no comparison between the naice parts of Nottingham and the godforsaken dump that is Mansfield.

Have you considered venturing a little further south? Loughborough isn’t the centre of the universe, but it’s much, much nicer than Mansfield. The countryside south of town, known as Charnwood Forest, is one of the most scenic parts of the East Midlands with fantastic walking & cycling opportunities. Quorn & Rothley are lovely villages, but this is reflected in house prices.

Alternatively, head west into Derbyshire. Belper, Matlock & Ashbourne are very pleasant market towns in fantastic countryside.

cashoncollection · 17/06/2021 19:07

There’s a reason it’s so cheap.

I have an affection for the places, being from a bit of a former mining shithole myself.

I don’t know Nottingham but Id be looking at Newark or Belper if I wanted somewhere as you’ve described.

Crabwoman · 17/06/2021 19:08

Wollaton? Keyworth?

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 17/06/2021 19:09

We could get a Manno mansion!

Which would then get burgled...

DelilahDingleberry · 17/06/2021 19:09

How many bedrooms do you need?

Crabwoman · 17/06/2021 19:09

@Crabwoman

Wollaton? Keyworth?
Christ, even Clifton Village
NotMeNoNo · 17/06/2021 19:13

You should come to Wilford, all the advantages of WB on the cheap.

MasterBeth · 17/06/2021 19:13

3/4 beds.

Yes, Wilford!

Really wouldn't recommend it. If you are sold on the idea, there are some nice parts of Edwinstowe.

DelilahDingleberry · 17/06/2021 19:23

£400k would get you a decent 3/4 bed in most of Notts. No way would I move to Mansfield if I could afford to live mortgage free somewhere else.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/06/2021 19:25

Originally my home town OP, I have also lived all over the UK including Nottingham, and until October we had been in Bath quite a few years(currently abroad). There’s a reason Mansfield is cheap- it has in my opinion one nice part of town to live - Berry Hill area. Whenever I’ve been back I always think It’s a horrible place, full of bitter people who think we ‘get everything down south’ - vote Brexit expecting unexplained sunlit uplands, aggressive families in town- crap shops, few decent nice bars /restaurants in town- just bloody grim and grubby. It does have though one saving grace, some great scenery and walking areas within 5 miles . Ravenshead is quite nice and between Mansfield and Nottingham as is Papplewick — not sure if they are a bit cheaper for you

fourminutestosavetheworld · 17/06/2021 19:26

It is surely the worst possible place in all of Nottinghamshire.

I've got friends there, in one of the nicer areas, and they're regularly burgled or find their cars and property damaged.

Go into the town centre, at any time of the day or night, and you will want to immediately wheel spin out of there.

It regularly features in lists of 'worst places to live in the uk.'

I would rather work until I'm 80 to pay a mortgage than move to Mansfield to be mortgage free.

My friend works for the LEA - all of her worst stories are about Mansfield schools.

Do not underestimate how wearing it can be to live somewhere where you feel unsafe.

As pp have said, many other places you can choose if you want to leave west bridgford for cheaper pastures. Newark, Radcliffe, Bingham all nice towns.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/06/2021 19:27

Had you looked in places like Bingham— that’s a nice area

Crikeyalmighty · 17/06/2021 19:29

Must admit I don’t like Newark much either unless it’s improved a lot.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/06/2021 19:30

@fourminutestosavetheworld. Yep that sums it up—

PervyMuskrat · 17/06/2021 19:37

I semi regularly get the train to Mansfield from Nottingham and it’s a no drinking train which says all you need to know really

Trenisenne · 17/06/2021 19:37

Gosh. Not a lot of (i.e. any) Mansfield love!

knickertrick · 17/06/2021 19:38

@MasterBeth

I think I’d feel really isolated in a village. Nothing to do and everyone knowing my business.

I like the city lifestyle, I just wonder if I can achieve that in Mansfield. Bars, coffee shops, independent places?

Mansfield?? Absolutely not that vibe. Manno mansion or not.Gin

Newark - nicer and more on vibe
Grantham - still nicer than Mansfield and more to offer than Newark
Southwell - NAICE. But quite small and a bit twee

Belper - nicer than Newark but not as naice as southwell. But closer to derbados than Nottingham.
