AIBU to move from Nottingham to Mansfield?

Have lived in naice parts of Nottingham (West Bridgford, The Park, Mapperley Park) forever and am now considering our next house move now the kids have all gone.

Am I mad to consider moving to Mansfield? Only 15 miles away, and much cheaper for similar house types. We could pay off our mortgage, get a similar house with a much bigger garden and still live in a sizeable town with a cinema, theatre, town centre market etc.

My partner thinks I’m mad. What’s Mansfield like to live in? Are there any hidden gems in the town centre?

I live in Hucknall which is somewhere most people wouldn't consider and wouldn't live in Mansfield! I wouldn't live in Bulwell either

Fluffyandsilly · 17/06/2021 17:06

I came on to suggest Beeston but I see others have beaten me to it!
Or maybe a village close to Lincoln?

Geamhradh · 17/06/2021 17:09

@Dogmum40

Mansfield , are you mad 🤣🤣🤣 stay put or relocate to somewhere like Newark! Do not under any circumstances move from Mapperley to Mansfield (unless you really have to then choose Berry Hill)
Was going to say, Berry Hill or The Avenue, maybe. Otherwise, stay the hell out of Dodge. (I spent every Friday and Saturday night in my teens in Mansfield, and even then you didn't tell your Mum you were going)
SandlakeRd · 17/06/2021 17:09

Another person saying you must be mad! Go for Beeston. Loads going on and still close to Nottingham for the city centre vibe. Mansfield will NOT give you that!!!

SandlakeRd · 17/06/2021 17:09

Oh and the awful Ben Bradley would be your MP!

Geamhradh · 17/06/2021 17:11

@SandlakeRd

Oh and the awful Ben Bradley would be your MP!
God in heaven, I'd forgotten that.
CrimsonImp · 17/06/2021 17:13

Oh and the awful Ben Bradley would be your MP!

Only part time, he'll be the leader of your council the rest of it!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2021 17:24

GrinGrinha ha ha, you can't be serious! I live in Nottingham, my cats go to a brilliant cattery in Forest Town. It's an absolute ballache to get too.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2021 17:25

I'm going to live in the Park when my ship comes in.

Trenisenne · 17/06/2021 17:26

Southwell is nice, but expensive because of the school, and it can be a bit self important, I think. Surrounding villages also nice, but still expensive. I don’t mind Newark at all, but I think it can be a bit rough, although likely not to Mansfield levels. I would also look at villages heading toward Lincoln, but I think you need to be careful….

ZaraW · 17/06/2021 17:31

I live in Beeston when not working overseas it's friendly and has lots going on. If I didn't live there I would move to Ruddington.

ZaraW · 17/06/2021 17:32

No way would I move to Mansfield. Newark is OK property is reasonably priced but not sure I would want to live there.

Auntienumber8 · 17/06/2021 18:06

You know when Rebecca Adlington got her gold medal they renamed the Weatherspoon's after her. I think that’s sums up Mansfield nicely.

ShinyMe · 17/06/2021 18:13

If you watch Traffic Cops or Police Interceptors or whatever it is that's based round there, they are ALWAYS in Mansfield arresting drunken drugged up drivers who are arrogant arsehole shites driving 120 mph down the main road into Mansfield with a litre of vodka inside them and a sack of cocaine wraps to flog in town.

I don't live in Mansfield but I'm near enough to know that it's not somewhere you want to move to.

spaceghett0 · 17/06/2021 18:15

I live in Mansfield, don't do it! Maybe Southwell or somewhere like that but I wouldn't recommend Mansfield at all.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 17/06/2021 18:17

There's literally nothing to do in Mansfield. There's There's a reason houses are cheap. There's one restaurant and one Indian restaurant I think. Have you looked at Southwell? Bigger village much nicer.

The leisure centre if I remember correctly. Think the 2 'spoons have always had their pubby names.
AnAwesomePossum · 17/06/2021 18:48

Mansfield has some beautiful areas but NO, don’t live there! Nottingham has so much more to offer! How about Southwell if you want a nice area outside of the city? Or Burton Joyce to be closer to city life?

AnAwesomePossum · 17/06/2021 18:50

I am very protective of Nottingham though despite not living in the fancy areas you mention!

YawnyOwl · 17/06/2021 18:51

@MumofBoys79

I don't know Mansfield but what about somewhere cheaper in Nottingham?

Sherwood is really nice.

And actually Bulwell is fine and has some really nice Victorian properties!

BULWELL? Are you mad?! Shock
BlackeyedSusan · 17/06/2021 18:51

Boys will be boys, a bit racist.

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 17/06/2021 18:52

What’s your budget? How many bedrooms?

AnAwesomePossum · 17/06/2021 18:53

Shock I’d rather live in the middle of Hyson Green over Bulwell (actually I have done just that in the past Smile).

DelilahDingleberry · 17/06/2021 18:55

What about Ruddington. Nice village life but only about 10 mins on the bus to the city.

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 17/06/2021 18:56

An ex of mine used to live in Hyson Green. That was scary. The next door neighbour used to blast music through the wall everyday and constantly swear and scream at her kids. So nice.
