Mama and "tiny human"?

I don't mean toddlers saying mama, more when people describe themselves as "Mama to Otis" or similar.
Tiny human is just dreadful. It just feels so twee to me.

AIBU?

Bae - before anyone else. Is that what that stands for? I thought it short for baby and was just people being too thick and trashy lazy to manage the extra syllable.

I prefer Teacup Human myself Grin but I'm fairly sure that my niece and nephew think 'For the last fucking time!' Is a variation of darling, sweetheart etc

TLKlover · 17/06/2021 10:56

Oh is that what Bae means...I thought it was just some random text talk. That's rather cringy.

My daughter calls me Mama to wind me up!
To be fair, I did the same to my mum when she wasn't listening to me, so it's probably karma! Haha

Pinkypink · 17/06/2021 10:56

These all made me laugh.
One of the kids had a nursery teacher who called the parents mummy or daddy one to one. It always faintly amused me that she called my husband daddy.
But better still was the mum who loudly corrected her at drop off: "I am not your mummy. My name is Zara, or Mrs Smith if you prefer."
Poor teacher looked as though she might cry

BlueRaincoat1 · 17/06/2021 11:00

I have never heard anyone in real life say "tiny human", I've only ever heard it on Greys Anatomy, when Arizona used to say it a lot about her patients. I thought it was quite cute in that context...

HoldingTheDoor · 17/06/2021 11:04

BAE is correct (and vom) Before Anyone Else

That sounds like a backronym.

peruse · 17/06/2021 11:09

@RestingPandaFace

I tell my DS he is my “favourite tiny human” I’ve never consciously heard anyone else say it but I shall go and put myself in time out anyway.

See you in 40 something minutes Grin

I call my DS “very smol boy” sometimes in a Russian accent

I think I’m heading to time out for life at this rate.

RestingPandaFace · 17/06/2021 11:24

@peruse Grinlove that! Come and join me in the time out corner. I suck some sweets out of the jar!

CroneAVirus · 17/06/2021 11:27

I’m with you there. It’s never my little man, or the little man always “Little Man” and it shouldn’t but it makes me cringe

I call DBoyCat little man Blush

Peoniesandpeaches · 17/06/2021 11:30

We’re a same sex couple so I’m mum and she’s mama. Had no idea so many people had such opinions about it.

peruse · 17/06/2021 11:44

@RestingPandaFace ha! My DS has taught me how to be an expert time out lego smuggler over the years so we won’t be bored either

TTCat39 · 17/06/2021 11:56

I can't bear it when people refer to a child as 'baby' as if it's their name.
"Is baby sleeping well?"
No, it's 'my baby' 'your baby' 'the baby'.

TTCat39 · 17/06/2021 11:58

@notalwaysalondoner I just noticed you had already mentioned my complaint! It's infuriating isn't it.

IntermittentParps · 17/06/2021 12:02

I hate all of these Grin

I think 'baby' as in "Is baby sleeping well?" (thank you TTCat39) might be the worst though.

There is solid evidence that using babies' own sounds back to them helps develop speech. These words are us naturally doing that by using language the babies can join in with.
I'm thinking more of adults using words like 'Mama' about themselves when no children are present.

81Byerley · 17/06/2021 12:04

@shallIswim

And for an irrational reason I hate the word 'tasty'
Are you me?????
Glitteranddirt21 · 17/06/2021 12:10

I never knew I had a dislike to the words tiny human till we had friends round and thier dc kept called my ds it.

Geamhradh · 17/06/2021 12:10

Are Americans (and people from the black country and other areas of the UK where its usual) allowed to use "mom" or do they have to get the OP's approval first?
Likewise the Spanish speaking world using "mama"?

As others have said, the whole reason mum/mummy/mom/mam/mama etc ever came about is because /m/ is one of, if not the, first intelligible sound ALL babies, irrespective of first language, make.

Rosesareyellow · 17/06/2021 12:18

YANBU.

Mama if your British and your children obviously don’t call you that, your just calling yourself or other mums that.

When people refer to their family as a ‘tribe’.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 17/06/2021 12:21

You got this.

I say no more.

Insert1x20p · 17/06/2021 12:28

You got this

Especially as 99 times out of 100 they really don't.

Quite. Which is why I tolerate mama. But not 'the aberration which is mumma'.

My dad is a scouser and always writes 'mom' even though he hasn't lived in scouseland for 70 years!

sugarlost · 17/06/2021 12:32

BAE - people calling their partners this as short for baby/babe

gonow · 17/06/2021 12:35

I don't like it when people say 'can I get a coffee'. When they are asking for something in a cafe. 'May I have a coffee' is much more polite

I don't think anyone objects to people using other terms for mother, it is people speaking of themselves as "Mama" when they are not speaking to children.

Me speaking my own small child "Mama will be back in a moment" = ok

Me posting on Facebook a photo of myself and my son with the caption "Mama and Little Man Done Good Today. We Got This". = awful

MoonCatcher · 17/06/2021 12:41

@Sssloou

It’s up there with Bubba, Hubster, Hun ...

My sister always spoke of “My son this, My son that” ... didn’t use his name, v weird and out of context - to me - his aunt who lives next door....! Always felt very territorial, owning ....

My sister in law talks to me* and refers to "my brother", it takes a few seconds to realise she's actually referring to the man I am married to. Yes, definitely a territorial thing. *seldomly
3Britnee · 17/06/2021 12:41
