Smelly feet in summer sandals

There is no messing about here my feet smell. They always have and probably always will. They get well washed and looked after, wear decent leather shoes, change them regularly and allowing them to dry out, cleaning both shoe and foot and wear cotton socks. I don't have athletes foot or anything like that and have tried all the strong overnight deodorants you can buy. I just have massively sweaty feet (and hands) and they literally kick up a stink.

Now that's the back story over with. I want sandles I have never been brave enough to wear them but I'm so hot at the moment I just want something cool. WIBU to wear some sandles? I work in an office without air con and everyone else looks so nice and cool with their feet out and I have mine cooking in little hidden socks with ether ballet pumps or brogues on.

How do people stop their feet from smelling? Sometimes I have to change shoes and socks and have a mid day wash because I can smell them even with my shoes on Blush

Name change because it was appropriate

The obvious thing to do is to get a cheap pair of sandals, wash and dust your feet thoroughly and wear them out for a walk to the park etc. On no account try them to the office for the day or buy a really expensive pair until you’ve given them a test run in a safe environment.

YellowFish12 · 16/06/2021 16:42

Would they still smell if you gave them a really good wash + dry and then put the sandals straight on and out? would be less opportunity to get smelly as they wouldn't be enclosed?

Probably need to replace the shoes/sandals more regularly.

Have you tried using the alcohol hand stuff on your feet? I find that quite good.

Thelnebriati · 16/06/2021 16:45

I wear washable walking sandals because they are the only thing that make my feet smell. I wear sheepskin boots as slippers all winter, with or without socks, and they never smell.
Washing my feet makes absolutely no difference.

StrawBeretMoose · 16/06/2021 16:48

I'd seek medical help, if your hands and feet are so sweaty it could be hyperhydrodis for which there is treatment available.

As PP says, try out sandals or flip flops at home and see how you go.
It will feel nice to get your feet out!

ledlight · 16/06/2021 16:54

The key is to get leather linings and insole, especially the insole, increasingly hard to come by. Any man made insole will make your feet smell whatever marketing rubbish they tell you. Also, any ordinary antiperspirant will work on your feet, try Mitchum.

Myfeetsmell · 16/06/2021 17:28

I have tried normal deodorant like mitchun but they make me a bit sticky and almost create a sludge it's quite unpleasant. I did speak to my DR and they gave me an over the counter deodorant for night but it really didn't do much but make my feet dry and sore they still stank and were still wet when i took my shoes off.

I did try flipflops once at home but my feet slid all over the place it was very very unpleasant. I buy decent shoes I'm a fan of hotter they are fully natural as far as I can see. I probably go through a pair every 6 months because the inside just rots away from being moist and rubbed. I also have DMs and a couple of pairs from M&S but again they don't last well.

Just put a teaspoon of bicarb of soda (NOT baking soda) in each shoe.

Swirl it into all the nooks and crannies inside then tap out the excess.

Repeat once a week.

Your life will now be changed forever👍(I promise!!)

baldafrique · 16/06/2021 18:52

Pumps make anyones feet smell! Flip flops are what you need!

RincewindsHat · 16/06/2021 18:53

Try T For Toes foot powder from Lush or similar - it's literally a kaolin dusting powder with tea tree oil which helps absorb sweat & stops your feet smelling. It's got great reviews online.

bigbluecup · 16/06/2021 19:08

I use driclor on my feet (and armpits, and hands, and back etc etc) and swear by it. It itches at first but stick with it and it can work miracles I promise. There’s also a deodorant called Trust which people swear by but I’ve not tried it yet

LilacLily91 · 16/06/2021 19:13

Try washing your feet with hibbiscrub. It gets rid of the bacteria that cause the smell. Worked wonders for me. Also don't scrimp on shoes - if I wear primark then my feet smell within a day

I tried cat litter but it didn't do anything I haven't tried this so I'll give it a try. I have plenty in the cupboard so I'll do it in a moment. Thank you

I’m a nurse and on my feet all day. I swear by this

www.amazon.co.uk/Peditech-Foot-Odour-Treatment-100ml/dp/B001DZPUSI/ref=sr_1_28?dchild=1&crid=2D0CJ5BM0U9Y1&keywords=foot+spray&sprefix=Foot+sp%2Caps%2C175&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1623867439&sr=8-28

Spray every day for a week and then once or twice a week.

I use hibbi all the time in the summer it does stop them smelling but not for long. I absolutely agree with Primark same goes for their clothing. The shoes are bad but the crotch rot from a cheap pair of work trousers I bought from them last year Blush

Another one who rates peditech, it really works!

SnackSizeRaisin · 16/06/2021 19:34

Sandals make my feet smell more than any other shoes. I would go for something leather like Birkenstock, leather is more smell resistant and they are also good when wet. I wear socks with them occasionally which seems to keep any smell under control.
Plasticky walking type sandals are hideously stinky and also no good when wet

Myfeetsmell · 16/06/2021 19:37

@Loubiemoo thank you it's ordered and will be with me for the weekend. I haven't used it before so I'm quite excited to test Smile

Ballet pumps and hidden sock things make my feet stink too. I can’t wear any sort of hidden sock things for that reason, just awful. Proper socks only!

But yes give sandals a go. Go for proper leather, with a non slippery inner sole. I’m a fan of anything from Clarks, Hotter, Teva…. (Although they’re not that stylish)! Birkenstock’s can smell.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/06/2021 20:00

Crotchrot as well? You need to use Hibiscrub year round, then, as you haven't killed off the fungus and bacteria yet.

Myfeetsmell · 16/06/2021 20:02

@Bagelsandbrie I was looking at birkenstock they looked so natural and open. Do you know what makes them smelly? I think I will have a look in Clarks tomorrow. Is there any opinion on saltwater? They are the Mumsnet summer shoe but are they for the smelly of feet?

Was going to mention hotter then saw you had mentioned it, I have these www.hotter.com/gb/en/tourist-sandals?awaid=1320&utm_source=redbrain&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=css&gclid=CjwKCAjwwqaGBhBKEiwAMk-FtF5PhlThOzUeCbBTPIXWiXnRbNz1yAI_pyhBgWBqt-MrCAU_1b_YWRoCXpwQAvD_BwE really comfy and go with everything, leather and feel natural, don't know if they will work for you but maybe worth a shot! I'm not especially sweaty of foot but am on the second summer wearing the same pair and they don't smell!

I think it’s the cork insole bit. They’re fine at first but over time they just smell. Well they do for me anyway…! There was a thread about Birkenstocks on style and beauty and quite a few people said the same thing.

I actually love my saltwaters and they don’t smell at all but the original style ones are super flat, no underfoot padding at all so depends if that bothers you. I think they have just done a new style with a thicker sole.

violetbunny · 16/06/2021 20:36

I used to have the same problem and use the Peditech Actifresh product as well. Unlike many foot deodorants it actively kills the bacteria that cause the odour. This spray works really well, you can also spray it inside your shoes as well as on your feet. I literally always have backups of it so that I never run out.

SquirrelCrimbleCrumble · 16/06/2021 20:44

Is it possible you could have hyperhidrosis?

Maybe ask your GP for a referral to a dermatologist, because you shouldn’t have to suffer like this Op

partyatthepalace · 16/06/2021 21:00

You can get Botox injected in your pits for excess smelling..... maybe feet too.

Do a road test, but do keep an eye on it at work, nothing worse than the smell of feet to ruin a summer day
