Smelly feet in summer sandals

There is no messing about here my feet smell. They always have and probably always will. They get well washed and looked after, wear decent leather shoes, change them regularly and allowing them to dry out, cleaning both shoe and foot and wear cotton socks. I don't have athletes foot or anything like that and have tried all the strong overnight deodorants you can buy. I just have massively sweaty feet (and hands) and they literally kick up a stink.

Now that's the back story over with. I want sandles I have never been brave enough to wear them but I'm so hot at the moment I just want something cool. WIBU to wear some sandles? I work in an office without air con and everyone else looks so nice and cool with their feet out and I have mine cooking in little hidden socks with ether ballet pumps or brogues on.

How do people stop their feet from smelling? Sometimes I have to change shoes and socks and have a mid day wash because I can smell them even with my shoes on Blush

Name change because it was appropriate

@LilacLily91

Try washing your feet with hibbiscrub. It gets rid of the bacteria that cause the smell. Worked wonders for me. Also don't scrimp on shoes - if I wear primark then my feet smell within a day
Yep, smelly feet can be caused by something called bromodrosis, which is bacterial.

Anti-bac washes and anti-bac foot and shoe spray should make a big difference.

AllTheCakes · 16/06/2021 21:15

A other one who rates the Peditech spray. I have the same issues and spray my shoes with it before and after wear, as well as my feet. Hope it works for you!

Workingfromhomeishell · 16/06/2021 21:20

Would you feet smell if you wore sandals though? Maybe they only smell because they are stuffed into shoes?

shouldistop · 16/06/2021 21:26

If you're at home all day in bare feet, do they still smell?

Myfeetsmell · 16/06/2021 21:48

@partyatthepalace

You can get Botox injected in your pits for excess smelling..... maybe feet too.

Do a road test, but do keep an eye on it at work, nothing worse than the smell of feet to ruin a summer day

If it went wrong would my knees look really surprised Hmm

I used Peditech, but what was actually better for me (and was recommended on here) was Sure deodorant on my feet. I have what the chiropodist called “wet feet” and Sure has revolutionised my life

Myfeetsmell · 16/06/2021 21:58

My feet smell sometimes right after a shower it's like they are ingrained with it. Last year I used a mud pack on them every night for a week to see if I could detox and clear the pores and pull anything bad out but it didn't help. I don't really have hard skin and I take good care of my toenails. They smell even when they haven't been sweating or in shoes. So in answer they smell just being around the house barefoot after a shower and I really don't know about sandles the last time I wore them I was at Uni in a lecture and the guy next to me told me that my feet smelt and that was nearly 30 years ago and they have been locked up since.

If you have hyperhydrosis you can have Botox injections in your fit/hands/pits that stops it. Get your GP to refer.

bookgirl1982 · 16/06/2021 22:09

Try switching to real soap rather than shower gel, it made a surprising difference for me.

I did have one of them but it doesn't scrub enough and doesn't get between the toes.

Would it be worth seeing a dermatologist. It really sounds that your feet sweating is excessive.

PutThatDownNow · 16/06/2021 22:21

I don't think I have ever outed myself on this before but I have a similar problem. Nice to hear others solutions too. I think it's important to think about what the insole is made of. I can slide around otherwise (apologies everyone). I like birkenstocks. The cork insole avoids sliding. Leather uppers help too. Plus they are airy and comfy. I have at least one new pair each summer. They get smelly eventually but I get most of a summer out of the them and tend to have different patterns on the go so I don't wear the same ones every day. I have washed some of the older ones without disastrous results.

Spelunking · 16/06/2021 22:27

My mum used to wipe round my sisters awful smelling shoes with surgical spirit. That worked pretty well.

JackieTheFart · 16/06/2021 23:14

Have you got any thickening of toenails? I had that for donkeys and it made my feet smell worse, no idea why. They don't generally smell much now although they will in proper shoes when it's hot.

I think you should consider a podiatrist rather than derm as it doesn't sound normal. My feet were proper mingy as a kid and teen but settled down as I got older.

My Birkies don't smell but if others find they do then probably don't go for them first - they're pricey if they don't help.

I really feel for you, I used to get so embarrassed.

That would suggest a fungal infection, thick crumbly toenails that smell is a classic sign. Toenail fungus does smell bad.

Have you tried any anti fungal treatments? There are some, and tea tree is also a natural anti fungal.

Slimmingstar · 17/06/2021 00:19

I used the spray on my feet in the morning, then I would freshen at lunchtime with alcohol gel smothered over my feet, then left a few minutes to dry. Kills all the bacteria causing the smell.
Also, bicarbonate and water mixed to a paste, spread on shoes/sandals overnight and then brushed off in the morning.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/06/2021 00:22

Scrub your feet with a brush in the shower ever day, really scrub.

Then spray with pink Sure deodorant and give your shoes/sandals a blast too. Works a treat.

I wear Flip Flops and for some reason the reek when no other shoes do and this sorts them out.

Golightly133 · 17/06/2021 00:25

Birkenstock Eva range are lovely and machine washable I wear them all the time
As an acupuncture practitioner have you Checked your diet i see this as an imbalance in your body. I have had clients a with this who have looked at the diets/drinks consumption tweaked it and managed to get it under control x x

That’s horrible of him - that you have held on to this memory is sad Hope you get the liberation of flip flops soon, Skechers flip flops are nice, and washable 🩴
Lalanbaba · 17/06/2021 00:32

Peusek, is like a miracle.
You can get it on amazon.
Mom used to get it for my brother when he was a teenager.

leafystreet · 17/06/2021 08:29

Most Hotter sandals have a synthetic footbed which only makes sweaty feet even worse.

Myfeetsmell · 17/06/2021 09:33

@KarlMaldensNose I'm not sure it was horrible of him. Other people must have been thinking it and not saying anything so he did help me otherwise I wouldn't have known. I never say near him again and it was very embarrassing being close anywhere else.

Have you not been to a dermatologist?

omgthepain · 17/06/2021 18:54

@op
An ex housemate had
This issue
You need several pairs of shoes and you need to rotate them - it just have a pair for 6 months
Buy 4 pairs, 2 of each style and swop them over half way thru the day and then rotate the next day with the other style

Do not just wear one pair continuously for 6 months if the soles
Are rotting away
That's awful
