to think that Marks and Spencers have lost the plot with women's dresses?

I went in today and, for a start, there's very little in stock.
But what was worse was how unattractive everything was.
this stood out, especially. Even with a gorgeous model it looks uber frumpy.

I think M&S lost the plot with womens' clothes years ago. I was in Liverpool about 3 years ago with my mum, in their main city centre store, and I looked around and said "you'd have to pay me (a lot) to wear any of this stuff".

I like their food and their knickers and that's it. It's a pity because when I was in my 20s I used to actually be able to get quite a lot from M&S. I wasn't stick thin and their clothes actually fit me.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 16/06/2021 21:35

Also they are so arrogant and flatly refuse to admit when they are wrong. There are a couple of towns that they have decided are too grotty so they've converted what were perfectly decent town-centre stores to outlet stores selling crap.

Then (unsurprisingly) the shops don't sell anything and they decide to close them down, food section included. Even though the food sections are always packed. The two towns I am thinking of both have massive housing developments going up and M&S would do really well with the bigger population and in each case the units would have done really well just as Simply Foods.

In at least one case the unit is still empty and the town/district council is so keen to get them back they've said they'd waive business rates.

Nope. They'd rather cut their nose off the spite their face. They really annoy me with their poor decision making. No lets just force everyone to go to the local out of town M&S which doesn't have sufficient parking.

I am glad that we do actually have a Simply Food in my town.

I can find things I like I'm there. I'm not sure exactly why this particular store is the subject of a ranting thread every year. Seems odd to me.

@Fangsalot89

Erm....I like that. The one that does my head in is ASOS.

To be fair most of us aren't ASOS target customers.

They are specifically aimed at people in their 20's.

Oh dear. They’re my go to and I’m 67.

stackemhigh · 16/06/2021 22:12

That denim dress, whilst not ugly, would drive my sensory issues crazy. Full sleeve, high neck denim touching my skin Envy

herecomesthsun · 16/06/2021 22:16

very impressed by their current offering personally

LaProcureure · 16/06/2021 22:18

I don’t shop in M&S, but I quite like that. I’d probably wear it.

Meddy583 · 16/06/2021 23:03

Online they've started selling other brands, like Seasalt, which is interesting. I still couldn't find anything I like though. I prefer midi-length dresses, and they are either too frumpy, too ditsy floral, or too strappy. But my biggest problems with M& S are:

  1. Almost everything hangs like a tent.
  2. If you do find something you like, then within a week you'll find yourself standing next to someone at a bus stop wearing the same thing, and they'll probably be twice your age and obese.
  3. If you find something perfect, they'll stop selling it within a few months and replace it with something inferior - which is why I"m still wearing a cami top I bought about 15 years ago. 🙂
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/06/2021 23:05

I think that dress is fine. I would wear it with Nikes or Stan Smiths

Blossomtoes · 16/06/2021 23:19

Not a fan of your ageism @Meddy583. Or your fat shaming, come to that.

Standrewsschool · 17/06/2021 07:01

@FreekStar

We have this thread every few weeks!
So true. Maybe we need an anti Cos/hush/whistles or whatever the accepted mn shops are.
SunSeaSurfGin · 17/06/2021 07:21

M&S are good for underwear, pjs, shoes especially with a higher heel, homewares, and smart classics like blazers

Everything else is very hit & miss

almahart · 17/06/2021 07:43

@Standrewsschool

lovely dress

I love this dress (and if M and S are reading this, please do it in navy )

That is nice - and of course it's out of stock!
motogogo · 17/06/2021 08:43

When they had their indigo range I used to buy a fair amount there but couldn't find anything to spend a £50 gift card on last week except overpriced underwear (I find it's no better quality than Sainsbury's which is half the price)

motogogo · 17/06/2021 08:45

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

Agree, I have a leather jacket but I only wear that on the motorbike!

youshouldbeplotting · 17/06/2021 09:00

Ageism and fat-shaming all in one sentence. How charming of you Meddy583.

JuneJustRains · 17/06/2021 09:17

Yes, I think I’m pretty safe from ‘women twice my age’ at the bus stop!

tinkywinkyshandbag · 17/06/2021 09:21

That dress would only look okay on someone 5'10, size 8 and drop dead gorgeous aka my daughter, who would literally not be seen dead wearing anything from M&S. I used to love M&S now the only thing I buy there is knickers and jeans. Even the jeans I'm a bit meh about.

Bitofachinwag · 17/06/2021 09:42

They have loads of dresses on their website. All different styles. Surely they can't all be awful?

My problem is that a lot of current fashion (most shops) sell the kind of things my gran used to wear in the 70s, so looks frumpy to me, but obviously it's trendy if you're younger than me!

youshouldbeplotting · 17/06/2021 09:47

Grin not many 114 year old women on my bus!
MagicSummer · 17/06/2021 10:05

I think the majority of clothes at the moment are plain awful! Terrible sludgy colours, poor quality material and bad designs. I have given up ordering and sending back as nothing seems to fit. I admit I have a large tummy so things don't seem to hang properly, but there must be a dress somewhere which would fit and flatter me??? I have good legs and arms so don't mind showing them off and no hips!

Blossomtoes · 17/06/2021 11:34

That dress would look perfectly good on just about anyone styled well. It might be a touch short if you’re 5’ 10”. And your daughter’s a bit stupid if she writes off entire brands because every label has some good stuff if you look for it.
JuneJustRains · 17/06/2021 11:52

Nor mine, youshouldbeplotting!

I suspect (whisper) that we ARE the ‘women twice your age’ that the pp mentioned.

CorianderBee · 17/06/2021 11:54

I don't think that dress is unattractive. It's quite stylish for a tall thin woman. But I did go in the other day and it looked like they were trying hard to keep a hold of their 80+ customers.
