I went in today and, for a start, there's very little in stock.
But what was worse was how unattractive everything was.
this stood out, especially. Even with a gorgeous model it looks uber frumpy.

M&S clothes are grim - badly made, cheap materials and very odd styles. We cut through the clothes department to the food and joke about how many of the clothes will end up on a sale rack and still not get sold.

HeadNorth · 16/06/2021 17:17

The M&S Good Move exercise range is excellent- my favourite running top and leggings are from their.

JanuaryJonez · 16/06/2021 17:21

I don't think I've ever bought dresses in there but I love their Ivy jeans - I have two blue and two white and they're the most flattering white jeans I've ever tried on. Each pair seems to have a different cut though so it's essential to try them on.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/06/2021 17:22

The long sizes also fly off the shelves!

Soontobe60 · 16/06/2021 17:22

That dress is fab, but not the shoes. I wear mine with trainers or Birkenstocks.

I bought this recently, which appeals to my inner hippy. Had to get a size 6 though as it is huge (usually an 8 to 10 in M&S). I really like it.

I agree with a lot of what’s been said here. That said, I’ve just discovered their Ghost range and actually quite like some of the dresses and despite being short, they actually look ok on.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 16/06/2021 17:34

M&S always takes things a step too far.

So, e.g., with that dress: it's actually a great dress, except for the ridiculous ruffles on the collar and cuffs.
I agree with this, @Nancydrawn

thereisonlyoneofme · 16/06/2021 17:37

Looks like a workhouse uniform to me

Ellie56 · 16/06/2021 17:37

I went into M & S the other day and there was hardly anybody in there. This was not surprising though considering the amount of shite they had for sale in the women's wear department. Hmm

M & S should stick to what they're good at like food and home stuff.

thereisonlyoneofme · 16/06/2021 17:38

The original pic that is !

MagicSummer · 16/06/2021 17:43

I like the idea of the dress - I had a midi blue denim dress in the 70s which I wore with a cream polo neck and boots. I absolutely loved the look, but sadly it wouldn't look the same on me now!

I agree that M&S clothes are very poor now with the odd exception. Even their cashmere is not as good quality as it used to be - full of static and very thin. It's a shame - they used to do brilliant work clothes. I had several suits and skirts which were made of excellent material and lasted for ages.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/06/2021 18:01

Sadly no point in clothes that last for ever if people are always buying buying stuff.
It’s a hopeless market because everyone can get whatever they need including high end stuff from eBay, a charity shop or cheap basics from the supermarket.

My typical outfit of Vejas, a cashmere jumper, 7 jeans and Gucci sunglasses came to £80 all in from eBay, charity shop and TKMaxx.
The cashmere jumper was in mint condition. The jeans were new. I work two jobs so little time for browsing either.

The only people using these shops are the young who don’t really know what suits them and people who like shopping.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/06/2021 18:03

Actually I do buy new when I’ve had a drink and I’m browsing Stoke and Beauty. Bloody flying squirrel jumpsuit.

Lemonwoe · 16/06/2021 18:08

I like their underwear, tights and food. But everything else is just well, frumpy and old fashioned. I think their target market was my granny and her friends.... but they have all passed away now, so no idea who is buying their clothes

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/06/2021 18:10

I have thought quite a lot of their summer frocks are nice this summer (more so than usual) but there seems to be very little stock available online.

That denim dress is quite nice with the right accessories. Agree it would look better as autumn/winter wear though.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/06/2021 18:14

So where, Lemonwoe do you shop? Please let us in on your superlative fashion sense.

StoneofDestiny · 16/06/2021 18:29

Too many of their dresses look like they are meant for fundamentalist Christians. They are also made for very tall people.

cappuccinoandcats · 16/06/2021 18:29

@SirVixofVixHall I am shocked about the changing rooms! What's going on there?
Always been female only

burritofan · 16/06/2021 18:38

Not a fan of that particular one but in general I like their range of “midi length, long-sleeved, floral-print, button-front, caters for heavy lasagne-and-chips-based lunches” sisterwife dresses. Quite enjoying that they stock lots of brands that all sell this exact style of dress like Seasalt and all the other purveyors of “posh frump” mentioned on the thread.

Whanganui · 16/06/2021 18:44

It’s the same everywhere not just M&S, just a load of old drab tat that I wouldn’t be seen dead in a field of shit in.
Although our M&S outlet used to be really good, & I’ve had some lovely quality dresses for my holz from there. Now it’s got row upon row of size 4 or 24 dresses.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 16/06/2021 18:45

I like it too. And I do not consider myself anywhere close to frumpy.
I'd wear it with Nike Air max and some bright make up

OverByYer · 16/06/2021 18:50

I like that denim dress and it’s a lot nicer than some of the monstrosities in there. I have a love/ hate relationship with Marks. I’m still quite loyal to them but they are lost at the moment

MagicSummer · 16/06/2021 19:13

Agree - clothes are just awful now. Sludgy colours, stupid floral prints, man-made materials, cheap-looking too. I wish they would bring back the lovely cotton summer separates one could get in the 80s/90s in nice colours - blue, pink, yellow, turquoise, etc. Sludge is just awful. I hate all the clothes I have at the moment - they are just so uninspiring.
