to think that Marks and Spencers have lost the plot with women's dresses?

I went in today and, for a start, there's very little in stock.
But what was worse was how unattractive everything was.
this stood out, especially. Even with a gorgeous model it looks uber frumpy.

Their dresses are rubbish, they never get them right (that one you linked to is far from the worst, mind!) - but I love their trousers, no bonkers unpredictable sizing, and a choice of lengths, plus some nice quality fabrics (some cheapy fabrics too but at least there's choice).

Whatwouldscullydo · 16/06/2021 14:26

Well that's the trouble with m&s. They no longer think their core market they used to have is good enough so they try akd rope the ginger ones in trying to be all "trendy" and fail miserably

Whatwouldscullydo · 16/06/2021 14:27

Ginger omg that should say younger...omg that's a bizarre typo

DrManhattan · 16/06/2021 14:34

It's a no from me

ACPC · 16/06/2021 14:37

I have a love/hate relationship with M&S, I rarely see anything I like in there and probably buy something once a year at the most BUT those things I do have from them are some of my best/favourite itemsConfused

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/06/2021 14:38

At least it's not ditzy flowers or animal print - like practically everything else that isn't barely covering my arse is in there.

I despise both - with a special mention for leather skirts and trousers as part of being a 'sexy late middleaged woman in her prime in Accounts', naturally. Leather clothing other than a jacket (NOT a bloody blazer, ever) belongs on stage or on a motorbike.

Just wait until you see the shite they're planning for Christmas. A denim dress that'll look like a dishrag without ironing for about 35 minutes a time will be the classiest thing you've seen all year from them.

Aprilx · 16/06/2021 14:39

I have been saying for ten years that they have lost sight of who they should be catering to. In my opinion, this was people my age (40s) and above, yet they kept on producing flimsy, too short, floaty dresses, more suitable to late teens / early 20s but they don’t want to shop in M&S. They end up not appealing to anyone.

PassionfruitOrangeGuava · 16/06/2021 14:40

Oh I quite like that actually. Think it'd look really nice with flats, wavy hair and red lips.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 16/06/2021 14:40

That is very plain, it reminds me of stuff my friends Mums wore in the 70's.
There are much nicer dresses online with M&S I didn't see them instore for some reason.

In my M&S, they have a range of dresses near the counter which are really nice, but they are to order as they are not stocking all sizes. The Staff are wearing them and a lady in front of me said I like your dress, and was told to order it in a couple of sizes and return which ever didn’t fit. I was very pleased, I managed to get a number of t-shirts each costing £9.50.

timeisnotaline · 16/06/2021 14:48

I like that. I’m a huge fan of a slightly quaker look. I had a dress very similar in blue denim growing up and I still mourn that I grew out of it Grin Sorry!

DownWhichOfLate · 16/06/2021 14:50

The ginger ones?! I was like this: Shock. Confused. Grin

WaterAndTheWild · 16/06/2021 14:51

I quite like it too!! I'm a Toast gal though..

I was expecting to see some ruffled monstrosity in man made fabric

MustardRose · 16/06/2021 14:52

They've lost the plot with pretty much everything, to be honest.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/06/2021 14:52

Amish chic. What's not to like?

knittingaddict · 16/06/2021 14:55

I was looking for some summer tops a couple of weeks ago. I wanted something classic in natural fabrics. I found nothing. It either looked like boring, frumpy workwear or tasteless, garish stuff in horrible fabrics. Needless to say I went elsewhere.

Councilworker · 16/06/2021 14:55

It's very surrendered wife. I'd expect to see someone on a documentary about Christians with massive families who have literal Bible beliefs wearing it.

whatswithtodaytoday · 16/06/2021 14:58

I like that dress too! Needs to be unbuttoned at the neckline though. They sell far worse, all the ruffly florals in polyester. M&S is trying to cater to everyone and it just isn't possible, they need to decide their target market.

ClawedButler · 16/06/2021 14:58

It's not so much that it looks like a depressed bin bag, it's the fact that they want fifty actual bastard pounds for the thing.

Notadramallama · 16/06/2021 15:00

44 and like the linked dress - with the neckline unbuttoned as per pp.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/06/2021 15:01

You're not wrong OP. That dress is grim.

Bergamotte · 16/06/2021 15:02

I actually really like that dress, in the black denim version. The only thing I'm not sure about is the ruffle at the neck (for some reason I quite like the cuffs). I would hope it would be quite hard-wearing too. I wonder whether I would overheat, having denim on my top half which couldn't take off? Hmm, you may cost me 50 pounds plus P&P, OP!

I agree that a lot of their clothes do look rubbish, though.

bridgetreilly · 16/06/2021 15:03

I like that dress.

MaMaLa321 · 16/06/2021 15:04

surrended wife. Yes, that's what it looks like to me as well.
