I went in today and, for a start, there's very little in stock.
But what was worse was how unattractive everything was.
this stood out, especially. Even with a gorgeous model it looks uber frumpy.

I quite like that dress - but you'd need to be 5' 8" and size 12 to look good - otherwise it would be a bit like a bin bag with a hole in it, tied round the middle

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 16/06/2021 16:37

M&S stuff has been consistently good lately - I have a fab broderie maxi dress which I’ve worn a couple of times a week since I got it. A good choice of plain basic t shirts as well - their basics have been really solid over the past few years.

Linen has always been a strong point for them.

Just goes to show it takes all sorts - if M&S started mainlining Popsy dresses, I’d run a mile as I can’t think of anything worse!

reesewithoutaspoon · 16/06/2021 16:38

I want summer dresses with straps wide enough to cover my bra straps. In cotton/linen for hot days. Without ruffles or tiers. that suits a big bust but hides a fat arse but doesnt look like a tent on . In nice colours

PurpleDaisies · 16/06/2021 16:45

I like that dress too, and a fair few of the others linked to.

I haven’t bought much in m and s for a while apart from jeans and sports kit (both great). I don’t find their tops or dresses flattering on me.

PixelatedLunchbox · 16/06/2021 16:45

I think these are gorgeous

Now if only I were 5'10 and 9 stone instead of 5'2 and a pudge muffin . . . . I could buy one Grin

Peridot1 · 16/06/2021 16:47

I went into M&S to buy some slippers for my Dad yesterday and ended up buying a white linen shirt, a blue linen shirt and a long green linen dress. I thought they had some nice stuff for a change.

I’m 57 so presumably their target market. I could have bought a few other things too but restrained myself.

starfishmummy · 16/06/2021 16:48

@FedUpAtHomeTroels

That is very plain, it reminds me of stuff my friends Mums wore in the 70's. There are much nicer dresses online with M&S I didn't see them instore for some reason.
I like it too but am probably a similar age to your friends mums!!
DeathByWalkies · 16/06/2021 16:48

That dress wouldn't look out of place on one of those FLDS polygamist cult members.

I agree M&S has lost its market. I shop on behalf of a relative in her late 90s and since the disappearance of the classic collection there's nothing in there that appeals to her

Miiaaoow · 16/06/2021 16:52

Someone saying it's primark quality made me laugh. I buy socks from primark because they're cheap. I recently saw the exact same pair for sale in M&S for double, if not triple the price. Identical.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 16/06/2021 16:53

Cheers @Standrewsschool

Looks a bit more 70s - quite sweet (but those sandals with it!)

80s LA was very structured, or at least the ones I bought (day & party dresses) were.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/06/2021 16:53

I think that dress looks odd because it's hot. On a cold summer day or in autumn that dress would be fine I think.
I myself have a button-through denim dress with a collar, a bit shorter than that one and without the belt.

Nataliafalka · 16/06/2021 16:54

You can buy good dresses from Next, White Stuff, Seasalt or Boden.

You really can’t. These are much nicer and as for Popsy, just no way!

TheOrigRights · 16/06/2021 16:55

In theory I should look OK in that dress - I am 5'8" and very slim, but I think it would look stiff. T

Nataliafalka · 16/06/2021 16:55

@Branleuse I agree that dress is fabulous, very vampires wife

KatieKat88 · 16/06/2021 16:59

Not a dress but I bought a lovely white top with pink spots on from there yesterday and some converse style trainers with a star on- I find I reject 99% of what they have but love what I do find Grin

HeadNorth · 16/06/2021 16:59

@TeamRick

Their selection of jeans this season is great! I really like the boyfriend ones! And the 'mom' jeans and wide legged cropped jeans have been really popular on S&B this summer!
The selection of jeans is great, but they don't stock enough/the wrong sizes. I tried some on today - high-waisted slim flare - fab but didn;t have my size/leg length. Went to order online - size 6 sold out across the board in regular and short. M&S size big, so their 6 is really an 8 - and they never have enough of them, they always sell out really quickly. You would think they would notice, but it has been that way for years - the smaller/short sizes fly off the shelves then are not restocked.
Tavelo · 16/06/2021 17:05

The dress is much more a winter one to me.
The stuff I've seen recently has been very frumpy. I think it's one if those trends to look so uncool it's supposed to be cool...but fails most of the time.

Standrewsschool · 16/06/2021 17:08

lovely dress

I love this dress (and if M and S are reading this, please do it in navy )

Or ochre.
Classica · 16/06/2021 17:10

I like that too, @Standrewsschool. So much easier to sling on a dress with sleeves then to work out the bra maths involved in a strappy dress.

Bythemillpond · 16/06/2021 17:11

I have the same problem with clothes.

Even if you get the right sizing and style the length of trousers, skirts or dresses is so long you end up trailing several inches of hemline

Laufeythejust · 16/06/2021 17:11

I like that dress too! It would suit my shape, not sure what I would wear it to but I like it.
I went there recently as I had some vouchers and bought a lovely work outfit- the blazer was really good quality. The running shorts were great too.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/06/2021 17:16

You would think they would notice, but it has been that way for years - the smaller/short sizes fly off the shelves then are not restocked.

I once asked a member of staff why they didn't stock more of the popular sizes - she signed and said they've asked Head Office several times for more of the 8s/10s/12s/14s but that HO insisted on sending the same range of sizes as they always had.
