to think that Marks and Spencers have lost the plot with women's dresses?

I went in today and, for a start, there's very little in stock.
But what was worse was how unattractive everything was.
this stood out, especially. Even with a gorgeous model it looks uber frumpy.

That is an awful dress, especially in black, It is quite a severe looking dress, and I would feel quite bunged up and restricted wearing something like that.

TheDiddlyGang · 16/06/2021 15:22

I like it!
I wouldn’t pay the price asked but I think it’s a nice dress

mamaoffourdc · 16/06/2021 15:24

Nope - I actually had some dresses delivered today from them - although they were the ghost M&s ones

ZaraW · 16/06/2021 15:25

I really like it I was expecting something hideous. My take on uber frumpy is a tunic dress with leggings.

nordica · 16/06/2021 15:25

I like that dress too and have a similar one from Boden from a couple of years back. It's really versatile and easy to add interest with accessories/nice shoes etc.

I actually think their photography for the website is not great. Often the way they style their clothes make them look terrible but they look really nice on "real people". I follow someone on Instagram who is an M&S "brand rep" or something and posts lots of their clothes and everything looks amazing on her.

mateysmum · 16/06/2021 15:26

Never mind dresses. I wanted a simple V or scoop neck white T shirt in a size 12. Could I find 1? Nope. Every T shirt bar one was crew neck and the only v neck was so thin you would be able to see everything through it.
Even with a 20% off offer I left empty handed.

Nohomemadecandles · 16/06/2021 15:27

I really like that. But I am about 5st too heavy to carry it off!

LizziesTwin · 16/06/2021 15:27

Dd just bought some trousers for work & a dress in M&S. She’s early 20s, works in a male dominated industry. I bought some cropped straight leg jeans recently which are great. I didn’t like their t-shirts, fabric too thin.

Cowbells · 16/06/2021 15:30

@Councilworker

It's very surrendered wife. I'd expect to see someone on a documentary about Christians with massive families who have literal Bible beliefs wearing it.
Exactly. I've thought this for years. For at least a decade they have been pushing the 'oppressed wife of some strict sect' look.
HelpMeh · 16/06/2021 15:30

It's not my taste but someone tall and willowy could fairly easily de-Amish that dress. Buttons need undoing, sleeves need pushing up, a proper belt and possibly a necklace.

It's certainly not the worst crime they've committed.

Geamhradh · 16/06/2021 15:30

If anything in M&S was in Hush or Baukjen everyone would be salivating and ordering it in every colour way.

Lockheart · 16/06/2021 15:32

It's pretty inoffensive, I wouldn't buy that one specifically but I have similar style dresses.

There's nothing wrong with long sleeves and a high neck!

GuildfordGal · 16/06/2021 15:32

Ugh. It looks stiff and encasing somehow.

I don't think it looks particularly awful, in an aesthetic sense, although it's not something I'd ever buy, but it looks uncomfortable. I don't like denim much though, and definitely not as a dress.

Gilly12345 · 16/06/2021 15:34

M&S lost the plot with clothing years ago, their buyers have no idea, no wonder they are in financial trouble, I haven’t bought from there in years but do go online but only buy underwear. Their food is good though.

You can buy good dresses from Next, White Stuff, Seasalt or Boden.

Oblomov21 · 16/06/2021 15:35

My friend needed to buy something on Sunday. Was shocked at how little they had. And how awful it was.

mustlovegin · 16/06/2021 15:35

The quality of some of their clothes is excellent. They do have their mishaps as well though, true.

alfiegirl61 · 16/06/2021 15:36

What drives me mad about M&S is their waist sizes. Like many middle-aged women (or indeed older, I'm 61), my waistline has thickened a bit over the years and even some things advertised as having an elasticated waist (see www.marksandspencer.com/polka-dot-midi-a-line-skirt/p/clp60460453?color=BLUEMIX) don't! I had to order two sizes larger than I buy anywhere else, and then get the sewing needle out to take it in, everywhere but the waist. Why do they think we'll all have teeny-tiny waists when most M&S customers are not 20-somethings?

MissyB1 · 16/06/2021 15:36

@Geamhradh

Yep this!
Divineswirls · 16/06/2021 15:36

I like it. It's not what I'd call frumpy at all.

I like a lot of their clothes.

Obviously they choose to cater for everyone like me, my DM and my DD and we wouldnt be seen dead in each others clothes or style and all have completely different body shapes so they have their work cut out for them.

Fangsalot89 · 16/06/2021 15:36

Erm....I like that.
The one that does my head in is ASOS.

rachelstriffle · 16/06/2021 15:38

YABU

Shops don't have to sell exclusively for YOUR taste.
If that dress was slightly longer (or possibly much shorter), I'd buy it. 🤷

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2021 15:38

The ginger ones made me pause and read it twice, trying to understand why 😂

MagnoliaBeige · 16/06/2021 15:38

I’m a recent convert to their skinny jeans, jeggings, tailored shorts, sleeveless summer tops and basic T-shirts. For the basics, I think they’re good quality and value. Haven’t tried their dresses yet though.

Newgirls · 16/06/2021 15:38

I was in a huge M&S the other day and I thought it was looking it’s best in a long time. The dresses, gym wear and underwear were very good.

Wooddie · 16/06/2021 15:40

Used to only shop and M and S. Once they started sourcing abroad looked elsewhere. M and S quality now awful for the price. No longer shop there for clothes - White stuff and Seasalt get my money - wear well in natural fabrics of good quality.
