For me it's Morning Fresh. I thought it was shite a decade ago. Bought it again recently and it is still crap. It doesn't lather and my usual Aldi own brand is far superior. How on earth has it survived this long?

Rolex.
Overpriced, mass produced aspirational nonsense!

By god they got it right though as everyone seems to aspire to own one!

I'm sorry but this comment isn't informed by anything horological.

Overpriced?!! Look at what the Daytona retails for - around £10k from memory - and then what new ones retail for on the grey market. Rolex could triple the price at their retailers and still fill their order list. They limit supply to maintain exclusivity. They are anything but over priced considering the horological pedigree.

Speaking of which.. the Oyster case, the perpetual movement, the quality of the functions.. there's a reason why serious people in their fields choose them.

If you're just frustrated at their ubiquity as the "I'm rich!" thing of choice, then sure - fine - vent away. That's your opinion.

But some things are factual. Rolex make very, very good timepieces - right up there. Yes Vacherin, Audemars, Patek remain the trilogy. But that's UHNW stuff.

Rolex works because it's luxury, at a price point where theoretically (!) a reasonably successful person in their field could save for an Oyster or Datejust and then have it for years and it holds its value.

Over priced it isn't..

Rolex! Now we are taking something close to my heart and in which I can share a little knowledge! If you are even an amateur horological enthusiast with or without a collection you need to acquire some introductory knowledge past the misunderstanding of Joe and Josephine public. I say that in an encouraging inclusive manner and not dismissive or snotty. The watch maker Rolex has a very different deeper understanding and appreciation between those that know about quality time pieces and those that think Rolex is the pinnacle. Rolex is far far from the top dog in terms of the hierarchy of horological development and watch making. What tends to confuse the public is the overall acceptance that Rolex is it and costs an arm and a leg. Actually in terms of fine time pieces Rolex is indeed a dominant mass market player with arguably the best ongoing advertising and endorsement campaigns but not the best or most luxurious by any means! I exclude bespoke rainbow precious stones pieces and other original (not after market set) “iced out” pieces.

I and husband wear, collect and treasure especially limited anniversary pieces stainless steel oyster sports and general tool watches non Cellini.

Rolex is I believe naturally a notch down from the agreed Swiss trilogy of Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. Personally I rate A Lange & Sohne to be the epitome of watchmaking even above the silly astronomical money (laundering) stuff like Richard Mille and Jacob & Co which is just for ostentatious VIP events that you collect from your bank safety deposit box because home insurance is prohibitive. Jaeger-LeCoultre and Breguet is arguably more highly rated than (most) Rolex. The Swatch ETA Group with Omega etc provides some value alternatives to Rolex but will not retain monetary value over time.

Rolex is best for being famous to non watch community and arguably a recognition as a store of value and thereby does have uniformed accepted values globally. Whereas to the untrained eye you could buy a better horological value and more accurate with higher quality finishing Grand Seiko but it's discrete stealth wealth (for sub US$10k at least) sleeper value. Some might mistake it for a cheap £300 Seiko 5 watch from a high street store.

The unique Rolex factor is that despite an annual production generally understood to be approximately one million pieces Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres certified with full in house movement - Rolex control the market demand! Rolex are the king of market manipulation by creating a mass luxury market demand and limiting supply to a highly controlled authorised dealer network. This means a parallel grey market is big business which all helps to maintain values so high that they tend to (certain sought after models) go over book value as only sold to first time buyers or to trusted collector buyers who will not flip for profit. Rolex will hold value if well kept in fine condition preferably “full set unworn unserviced original so not repolished but periodically turned” in a motorised watch box.

If you want pure horological quality in time keeping in terms of the accuracy (automatic not quartz movements of course) then consider Grand Seiko as better value than Rolex as also sought after by those who know more than just Rolex!

Great thread OP.
I have to agree with many PPs re Dyson. Couldn't get rid of it fast enough, ditto Shark.

Seasalt might get a bashing by some but I can wash and tumble dry their clothing and not even iron them!

I'd love to say that M and S is great but I don't think it is any more.

Someone earlier mentioned Bon Marche... their linen blend trousers are brilliant. Wash and wear and last years.

We've recently been converted to Branston baked beans, thanks to MNetters as well as Aldi dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid ( even Which? recommends them.)

Stopped going to Clarke's many years ago as the quality wasn't great.

I've always suspected the quality of the metal at Pandora and I feel that their charm bracelets all look the same, despite the individualism of the charms.

As to Smeg... stayed in a cottage once that had one of their fridge freezers. The suction on the door seals were so strong that whenever we opened the fridge door, milk or juice in the door slot would fall out.
We had a Smeg dishwasher, until recently. We had it just over a year. The tablet dispenser failed to open many times and we kept getting black residue on dishes.

Love Aldi and Lidl chocolate... much better than Cadbury's and other brands.

DK123 · 15/06/2021 22:29

The White Company - the quality (especially of the clothes) has gone down the drain and the prices have carried on going up.

Hush clothes - a lot of the things I've ordered have had to go back as the quality was poor.

Dyson - I had a cable on a fan perish and although it's good the hairdryer is light, it's nothing special.

Charbonel et Walker, Prestat, Hotel Chocolate- I think they're all a waste of money

Fortnum and Mason foods - some of the chocolate biscuits are nice, but they're very overpriced, the rest of the food isn't as good as it once was

Lululemon- I've given up and purchase exercise clothes elsewhere now

Tom Ford Makeup - that was a complete waste of money!

Charlotte Tilbury Makeup - the worst quality beauty counter products I've ever bought

La Mer - I think this is in the category of "snake oil"

Anonmousse · 15/06/2021 23:44

I thought there was something like a 3 year waiting list for a new Rolex Submariner?

Bananasinpyjamas21 · 16/06/2021 00:09

I actually love La Mer!

Sadly I am on Cerave now (which isn’t bad at all) the body moisturizer. Which is nearly as good as La Mer. But not quite. My skin gets really bad, ugly red angry patches, very quickly, but a bit of La Mer and it’s totally gone. Can’t keep justifying the price though.

DahliaMacNamara · 16/06/2021 00:10

I had no idea there was a watch community.

Bananasinpyjamas21 · 16/06/2021 00:10

And I love Heinz. what is wrong with me?!

No! If you want one you can buy at manufacturer recommend price from many large international authorised dealers. Covid has not just cancel Baselworld and Rolexit etc but I suspect have reduced the global demand for many watches including Rolex especially in the big economically hit main marketplaces of the Far East, North America and Western Europe. Even in London the lack of the usual high spending middle class Chinese shopper tourists is having a big impact on Bond Street and Knightsbridge watch sales. Those who are looking at buying their first Rolex (usually stainless steel Oyster) are out of the market or just buying a cheap Apple Watch which of course is just a mini smartphone on a wrist that has rapid built in obsolescence as ages fast semi disposable with little after sale value and so will not stand the test of time with new annual replacement models.

You may find difficultly in securing particular sought after new but older Subs as Rolex introduced new subtle specifications last year www.hodinkee.com/articles/rolex-submariner-date-41mm-introducing

Beware watches can become additive and so a very expensive collecting hobby.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 16/06/2021 00:32

@DahliaMacNamara

I had no idea there was a watch community.
Watches are huge! Millions of enthusiastic collectors throughout Far East, North America and Europe. Mostly men but now also a few woman from business and professional sectors etc. It’s a dangerous additive drug! Expensive too! It’s the only game where you can wear millions of pounds if you could afford it eg watchesofmayfair.com/brand?product_list_order=price_desc
JewelGarden · 16/06/2021 00:48

I bought that creme de la mer for my mums birthday one year, sneaked a bit to try it and thought it was very similar to the little blue pot of nivea you get. Left my skin very shiny.

Lolalovesroses · 16/06/2021 00:48

Agent Provocateur lingerie.

stayathomer · 16/06/2021 05:55

I can only find comments saying Miele are great but that's obviously in reply to people saying they're bad. I'm on the bad side I'm afraid, in fact I'd go as far to say they make me irrationally irritable! Washing machines (3 bad ones in houses we were renting at) and 2 hoovers. Drove by the factory when we were in Germany and I had to stop myself ranting!!!

stayathomer · 16/06/2021 06:04

One thing she has said is that standards hove gone down noticeably
I plucked this out of a comment. Isn't it sad that standards have gone down so much in so many products. I said regatta in my comment earlier-DH and his mum both went on regatta spending sprees (raincoats, hiking boots and some hiking boots for the kids) because myself and bil told them how himself, myself and my mum and dad all had waterproof gear that had lasted 20 years plus. Their everything lasted a few years. They wrote to them (really diplomatically) to say their warranties were out and they were disappointed at the quality as we're a regatta family and they each got a 'your receipt is out' standard email. Plus my mum has appliances 30 years plus that sd he says when they're broken she'll be replacing the replacement every five years and it's so true. Everything is so disposable!

Geamhradh · 16/06/2021 08:34

@ILoveShula

The people posting have obviously not tried M&S Eccles Cakes.
Or donuts. The raspberry jam ones.
ILoveShula · 16/06/2021 09:22

I've not tried those. M&S cheese scones are delicious. I'm referring to the bakery ones not the packed ones, but the packed ones are fine. Same goes for the eccles cakes.

I really miss my local M&S.

MirandaMarple · 16/06/2021 09:26

SMEG.

Emblazoned with ghastly branding. I don't get it.

CorianderBee · 16/06/2021 09:33

How is Morning Fresh premium? It's £1.20....

Op has already explained what she meant. She's only has six posts, so you don't have to read the whole thread to find it. In case you don't know, the 'see all' link at the bottom of the first post showd you everything the op has written. It saves a lot of trawling.

I meant what branded products are inferior to non brands. I have a couple of friends who will only buy brands. And they would go with Morning Fresh say over Tesco own brand even if they heard Tesco was better

hellogem · 16/06/2021 12:29

Anything that has an outlet!
It really annoys me paying hundreds for an item then can't get anything close to it if I was to sell it because there's outlets that are selling way cheaper!!
And am not even talking about it being used, never used still tags on sometimes

You could say the same about buying something and it's reduced 50% in the sale.
hellogem · 16/06/2021 15:08

@ZaraW that's different as it's gone on offer due to last few pieces etc it's not always at the store with 60% off

It's the same thing surely unsold stock?

JudgeJ · 16/06/2021 16:12

@ILoveShula

I suspect that brands may produce different quality for different outlets or markets. Are the cheap Nies and Ascs in Sp* Dir* the same models and quality as the ones in a top sportswear retailer?
This has always been the case with many products. We were told by our plumber that the shower units sold by the DIY stores have cheaper componants than those sold by the main dealers or company direct, ditto a lot of bathroom stock, eg plastic where a steel componant should have been used.
JudgeJ · 16/06/2021 16:24

The $10 'Rolex' I bought in Tijuana fifteen years ago works a treat and looks the part, to a non-expert. Suits me fine.
TellySavalashairbrush · 16/06/2021 16:34

Massimo Dutti- Really poor quality. I have had 3 items that all fell to bits/stitching ripped apart within only a few washes. Their customer service is dreadful too.

Michael Kors- Overpriced bags that are not great quality at all.

Ted Baker- T-shirts that faded in a short matter of time £50+

Wagamama/Yo- Sushi - Ok maybe not high end, but bloody expensive for what they are and pretty tasteless imo.
