Would you pay £18 for this as a main in a posh restaurant?

Ordered what I thought was a salmon fillet from the mains, this is what arrived…it was £18. I’m gutted.

Yes, definitely looks like OP was given the starter either by mistake or because they were running out (or someone on the kitchen skimming though that seems less likely). I would definitely complain.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 13/06/2021 00:25

I love the rustic verdigris style plates. I wonder where they got them from?

LateAtTate · 13/06/2021 00:26

I would send them a polite email with a picture from the blog post and if they don’t response appropriately plaster it all over TripAdvisor , social media and everywhere else you can think of 😂

BritWifeinUSA · 13/06/2021 00:27

If it comes with MN “huuuuuuuuuuge salad” then it’s good value.

chesirecat99 · 13/06/2021 00:29

I would expect and happily pay £18 for 6 pieces of salmon sashimi in a beautiful location. It costs about £7 for a similar portion served in a plastic box from supermarket sushi counter or a high street chain. Good sashimi is expensive, you could easily pay that much for just one piece of the best fatty tuna.

I am not surprised that you were disappointed with what you ordered though and were expecting a fillet of salmon. "Chatsworth Gin cured salmon, cucumber & seaweed" is a bit ambiguous. I guess if I had thought about it, I might have realised from "cured" it must be a ceviche type dish but you shouldn't need a culinary qualification to be able to interpret a menu. If it had called it sashimi or ceviche, I would have expected a portion of that size for that price.

@Ijustknowitstimetogo have a look at rustico stoneware on cooksmill website or Churchill super vitrified on nisbets.

avamiah · 13/06/2021 00:33

Now that is ridiculous let’s be honest here and it looks like a starter or a dish that is part of one of those 10 course dinners if you know what I mean .
I hate being ripped off and I would of had to say something .

Oh, or the olympia canvas, also on nisbets.

withiceplease · 13/06/2021 00:34

They knew you were on MN and that plate of food would have lasted you all week

Ilovetea33 · 13/06/2021 00:36

Not only is there a marked difference in size, but the salmon dish on the blog came with bread! You definitely have reason to complain.

EverythingRuined · 13/06/2021 00:46

@Flowerwinter

It’s a hotel/champagne restaurant in Derbyshire. It was on the menu as a main course for £18. I understand it’s sushi grade etc but I’d expect at least a piece of bread with it or some salad?! I did query if it was a starter and he said ‘it’s a main, as it’s on a big plate’.
Exactly, it’s not the salmon that’s the issue it the fact there is bugger all else. If they had a bit o bread or salad with it then it would be grand.

If the hotel had given side dishes then that would be ok too but you said that it didn’t.

I’d have asked for some bread. ( did they give bread for the table?)

earthyfire · 13/06/2021 01:01

One of those restaurants you're going to leave hungry.

oopsyydaisyy · 13/06/2021 01:05

@JayAlfredPrufrock

To be fair there is quite a lot of salmon.
where? Confused
Ijustknowitstimetogo · 13/06/2021 01:06

Good work V thank you! The white is beautiful as well.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 13/06/2021 01:48

Hope you said you wasn't paying

1forAll74 · 13/06/2021 01:58

The plate is grim, and the food badly arranged, and looks like some leftovers for the dog to eat. 40 pence worth maybe.

don’t be ridiculous 🙄
HarebrightCedarmoon · 13/06/2021 02:21

Looks rubbish. I've made nicer looking food at home just for me for my lunch. They are taking the piss.

Upinflames · 13/06/2021 04:22

At the risk of sounding like a massive wanker, here goes:

I find high end restaurant food to often be richer and more highly seasoned than 'regular' dining out food. All the butter and complicated sauces and smudges and blobs of delicious, wildly fatty stuff that chefs like to sling about. So I don't need to eat as much of it to feel full, and a big serving would make me feel quite ill.

This looks about standard, assuming you ordered sides?

Classica · 13/06/2021 04:41

She said there weren't any sides on the menu

Sometimes it is quite nice to have a meal that isn't huge portions. My local favourite upped their portion sizes recently and it spoiled the dinner to be so full.

I agree, sometimes it is nice to be able to have three courses and an amuse bouche without feeling stuffed to the gills.

ChessieFL · 13/06/2021 05:46

Interestingly, that blog refers to it as a starter but the blog has a picture of the menu which is the same as the sample one on the website and it doesn’t differentiate between starters and mains, it’s just a list of dishes. I think the blog people just ordered it to eat as a starter rather than it officially being a starter, if you see what I mean.

Malin52 · 13/06/2021 06:04

OP if it's the one I've found by googling those details then I see your point. However the pics I see online from other reviews show the salmon to be 6 massive long bits and a slab of sourdough! See attached!

I see they've got an £18 and a £7 version. If that's the £18 version then I dread to see the smaller one!

Malin52 · 13/06/2021 06:06

I mean if yours is the £18 version I dread to think what the £7 one is!

I'd be happy to pay £18 for the plate I posted.

Why not email them and sent a pic of your plate, the bill and what you expected from 'reviews' you might get something out of them
