Ordered what I thought was a salmon fillet from the mains, this is what arrived…it was £18. I’m gutted.

@Onairjunkie

God people are daft. It’s not a dirty plate, it’s rustically glazed. 🙄 it looks like massive hunks of raw sushi-grade salmon. Delicious. And expensive due to the way it is treated to make it safely sushi-grade.

Some people on here, honestly. Embarrassing.
Are you only happy with quantity over quality? If you want masses of food, go to a chain pub.

I’m inclined to agree.
UrgentExit · 13/06/2021 09:25

The OP says there are no sides on the menu, each plate comes complete. The diner on the blog link got sourdough bread with hers.

I’d have sent that back. It looks extremely scruffy and I’ve never seen cured or smoked salmon served in chunks in a restaurant. It should be finely sliced or as per the plate illustrated on the menu.

LightasaBreeze · 13/06/2021 09:28

Maybe they can't get staff, isn't there a shortage in hospitality and that is why the presentation is so poor, it doesn't look very appetising.

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/06/2021 09:30

Cavendish Hotel? The starter version looks much better! Looks like you got the dregs!

@wherewildflowersgrow

Most restaurants and cafes are overcharging at the moment. I've had reason to eat out three times this week and have been stunned at the spiralling cost-and empty restaurants. Charging high prices is not a way out of the pandemic; people have less, and it will drive them away. I eat out regularly and will be cutting back.
Absolutely agree and said the same after being charged £23.50 for a bottle of rose at a small bar on Friday, I’m pretty peed off at it all. Same everywhere we’ve been since opening up, including our cattery!!
OhWhyNot · 13/06/2021 09:31

Would be a lovely starter

Is that cubes of melon ? How retro melon back on the menu (though it should be for starters)

BarbaraofSeville · 13/06/2021 09:34

Well if they don't have the staff, they shouldn't be spending time trimming salmon and cucumber into tiny shapes and covering it in arty drizzle.

Placing some salmon, cucumber, nori, salad and dressing on a plate like in the photo is something that anyone can do in about two minutes. It doesn't take a highly qualified chef to do it.

goingtotown · 13/06/2021 09:34

This thread will not do the restaurant any favours.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 13/06/2021 09:35

Having been to a few Michelin-starred places I'd say that's pretty standard... I agree it is shit and there is a place for amazing/considered flavours and some quantity!

I agree, and I am not sure that's fair TBH...
Juststopasking · 13/06/2021 09:37

Looks like a plate where someone has finished eating and that's what's left. Id complain if id paid £10 for that, never mind £18.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/06/2021 09:40

It probably is fair if that's what they're providing as a main, when you get far less than a starter consisting of similar food at half the price.

To answer the OPs question, no I wouldn't pay £18 for that, because it's not an actual meal, and it looks like what I end up with after poking around in my fridge on a lunchtime when I don't have much time.

I would however, pay £70 for the large sharing platter for two, because you get four different things plus bread, salad and potatoes.

iduno · 13/06/2021 09:41

Oh my 😱 I'm not a big eater but if that's the main. I still be hungry after 3 courses, maybe even 5 courses 😆

Can't believe they charged £18 for that! You'll be going home hungry!

purpleleotard · 13/06/2021 09:41

'Stared' restaurants are an absolute waste of time for me, as a veggie.

Last time I ate in a posh place I felt so let down by the teaspoon sized portions. Caused a bit of a scene within the group.

Yes I did look for a chippy on the way home

SinkGirl · 13/06/2021 09:43

I have said YABU because in lovely restaurants, portions are always smaller so you can have a meal rather than be stuffed from one course. I’m nowhere near a competitive under eater, I’m also definitely not thin, but when I go out for dinner normally I can only eat a main course because they’re always too big. I love going to a really nice restaurant where I can eat three smaller courses! And I think in terms of posh restaurants, £18 is quite cheap for a main - we don’t go to fancy places often but mains are usually double that when we do - is it possible it’s one of those situations where the item comes as either a starter size or a main size, with different prices?

Alondra · 13/06/2021 09:45

Yes I would. It looks like a huge plate with a good portion size of salmon divided in small pieces. It's what I would expect to pay in "a posh restaurant" where quantity is less important than quality.

Letsnotargue · 13/06/2021 09:46

I would be disappointed if that was my main, but I’ve googled your description and found a place with a ‘seafood and champagne terrace’. In that kind of environment I can see how this is a standard offering.

I’ve done similar before - I ordered smoked trout expecting it to be like finely sliced smoked salmon, but it was actually quite big cubes of clammy raw flesh. I had to swap with my other half which is saying something, as I usually eat everything!

Sorry you had dinner disappointment - I love eating out and that feeling is just the worst.

TheKeatingFive · 13/06/2021 09:47

I haven’t rtft.

Was it part of a tasting menu though? Because if it was then perfectly fine for that to be a ‘main’. It looks gorgeous.

And no the plate’s not dirty, that’s the glaze. Christ on a bike.

TheKeatingFive · 13/06/2021 09:49

Perfectly normal to serve it like this in expensive restaurants

BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/06/2021 09:50

@HarebrightCedarmoon You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but your experience isn’t necessarily that of others, as @EssentialHummus post demonstrates.

If you want to have something at home that you consider better, crack on. And if you read the entirety of the post you quote, you’ll note that I’ve said the OP isn’t, in this instance, being unreasonable.

YukoandHiro · 13/06/2021 09:51

There's actually a full portion of salmon there - just sod all with it. Were they charging £7 for every side including potatoes and veg etc? Utter rip off.

Brefugee · 13/06/2021 09:54

It took me about 30 seconds to find it using Google from the info the OP has given.

jeez take a chill pill. Someone wants an opinion on something they can provide the link.

KatherineJaneway · 13/06/2021 09:56

Really love to know what the venue is

HarebrightCedarmoon · 13/06/2021 09:59

What is actually on top of the salmon, OP? If they were going for the "Plateau de Ritz crackers avec Tesco value fromage" look, it's spot on.

cocoloco987 · 13/06/2021 10:04

It's a seafood terrace of a champagne bar where they provide nibbles/accompaniments to your drinks rather than full meals . I'm starving just reading that menu and I would not go there for the food however I do feel its accurately described and as expected for the setting.
