Aibu to ask if it is unhygienic to sit on the bed wearing outdoor clothes

Chatting to DD who in passing said she won’t sit on her bed wearing clothes she has been outside in, particularly if she’s used public transport. Is this a thing? Am I a bit grubby for not giving it a second thought? I wouldn’t lie on the bed wearing my shoes but other than that don’t give it a second thought.

It's probably not that unhygienic. I couldn't do it though.
I always change into track pants at home. Far comfier.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/06/2021 15:50

I think this is personal. That's it. Neither is wrong. I get why someone wouldn't, I usually don't, but sometimes I do so I get why someone would.
I usually change as soon as i come home into home clothes anyway though, but wouldn't rhink twice to just lie down or sit down for a minute if I felt like it

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/06/2021 15:53

neither of you is unreasonable.
it's personal tolerance.

xyzandabc · 10/06/2021 15:57

I would sit or lie on a bed fully clothed, so on top of the duvet. I wouldn't get in to the bed, so under the duvet where I actually sleep.

NumberTheory · 10/06/2021 15:58

I don’t think it’s particularly rational if it’s hygiene (i.e. concern about germs causing illness) rather than cleanliness (i.e. concern about muck making things grubby).

Personally I wash the bedding frequently enough that I’m not that concerned about muck, though I’d still avoid if I’d been rolling around in mud.

Iknowyouknow · 10/06/2021 15:59

I would never have thought of it normally but since COVID I am more aware of where I have been sitting in my clothes and usually change now when I get home.

CantEnjoySummer · 10/06/2021 16:06

On top of the duvet yes.

Under absolutely not.

RandomLondoner · 10/06/2021 16:06

I never thought there was anything wrong with sitting on a bed. I was forty-something before I found out UK hospitals don't like it.

MadeOfStarStuff · 10/06/2021 16:06

I personally don’t like it, it suddenly started freaking me out a few years ago so pre pandemic but worse since covid. I do have diagnosed anxiety though

I wouldn’t call someone else gross for doing it though. Except shoes, outdoor shoes on beds is gross, don’t know why it’s so common in tv and films!

Underbox · 10/06/2021 16:07

My DD is exactly the same, especially when she's been on the train. She'll come home and immediately change her clothes or put on PJs before sitting on her bed. I would probably do the same to be honest. Each to their own, no big deal. I think Covid has a lot to answer for!

OhGiveUp · 10/06/2021 16:09

People allow animals on their beds, sitting on your bed in outdoor clothing pales into insignificance compared to that.
I sit on my bed fully clothed.

SummerInSun · 10/06/2021 16:20

I'll happily lie on the bed, or in the bed, if I'm lying down to grab a quick snooze I'm the afternoon, in whatever I happen to have on. Unless I'm covered in mud or other visible gunk.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 10/06/2021 16:22

I've never given a shit.

butterry · 10/06/2021 16:24

I haven’t ever thought about it as I’m always desperate to change into more comfortable lounge wear at home. Personally I think it’s cleaner if you don’t wear outside clothes on the bed but I also don’t wear outside shoes indoors either or allow the dog into bedroom

Wimpeyspread · 10/06/2021 16:26

@osbertthesyrianhamster

I've never given a shit.
Definitely this!!
Bksjshsbbev2737 · 10/06/2021 16:27

I find for me (and I don’t mean this for others) that if I personally go down this route of thinking I’ll become obsessive and start feeling like that about the sofa and the house and end up needing to shower and change the minute I come in.

steppemum · 10/06/2021 16:29

I wouldn't think twice about it, they are just clothes.
I don't change out of work wear into more confy wear either, because I don't have to wear office wear, and so my clothes are all comfortable (unless going to a wedding!)

But since Covid, I think we have all become more aware of stuff like this.
I also don't travel on public transport, so I might feel different if I did.

picklemewalnuts · 10/06/2021 16:36

If you've been on public transport a lot, you might feel more strongly. I can smell it on DH.

CornishGem1975 · 10/06/2021 16:44

I've honestly never ever given it a second thought.

PattyPan · 10/06/2021 16:48

I don’t lie on the bed/sofa in clothes that are properly dirty ie sweaty clothes I’ve just finished working out in or muddy clothes if I’ve just come in from the allotment/garden but I don’t have a problem with normal everyday clothes. I normally commute on public transport and have never changed after work but I’ve already been told on various threads how weird I am for not changing into something more informal.

HareofEasttown · 10/06/2021 16:49

What's the worst that can happen? Honestly?

starrynight21 · 10/06/2021 16:50

I don't use public transport, but since Covid I've become very aware of hygiene. When I get home, even if I've just been shopping, I have a shower and put all new clothes on. I just feel better doing that.

ZaraW · 10/06/2021 16:55

YANBU but there are a plenty of germophobes on here who will say you are.

Whyhello · 10/06/2021 16:57

Never thought twice about it.

niceandsimple · 10/06/2021 17:06

I never think about it. But, now that I am, I think that those who obsess to that level will not have very strong immune systems. The question is, is it because they clean too much. Or, because of a weakened immune system, they have to clean more...
